apparently this happens to stock JKs because of a factory mistake. See this video showing a very common cause. This isn't my video, I just found it on Youtube when searching for causes for this problem.

I have a theory about death wobble. getting stuck and getting yanked out. or yanking other people out. i really doubt that that is good for you vehicle.
If you experience death wobble on a Jeep that previously didn't have a problem and no recent mods, I say check worn suspension components. However, if you lifted your Jeep on the cheap meaning no front adjustable control arms reduced caster angle is most likely the issue. Caster should be about 7%. I had death wobble after a 3" budget lift. I added longer fixed extended length control arms and 97-99 lower control arm bolts with the eccentric adjustment, dialed in more caster, problem solved.
check out "avionicbug" on youtube tell me what you think Randy it's regaurding this on a 1996 2500 diesel I had to shorten in about 3/4" it was too wide for the 96 check out my videos.
Wanna learn how to get rid of it? Upgrade your steering stabilizer. The stock stabilizers are cheap, made for Chrysler cars, and do not hold well against tires over 28" diameter. There are alot you can buy, or kits to double them (just in case you have 40s). I lifted my 2005 TJ to 4", and drove the stock 28" tires. It was fine, until I upgraded my rims and tires for 33x12.5 and then DEATH wobbles around 33 and 66 mph. It was scary. And then I upgraded my steering. All better. Hope I helped.
@NMPros if your lift is done correctly you dont need a stabilizer. most people put the stabilizers to mask the problems. i got this from 4wd magzine so im pretty sure its right
A lift throws off the equilibrium of the entire vehicle. A stabilizer is a stock piece of equipment placed into the equation by engineers at various manufacturing facilities. They put stabilizers on the front wheels to compensate for natural tire wobble. It has nothing to do with suspension. The tires will wobble due to many factors including the road, tread and size. 4wd magazine is not full of certified technicians, but rather just editors.
Check 8 seconds into the video. Watch the shadow on the side of the tire and you will notice that before any suspension pieces start moving unnaturally, that the tires begins to shake side to side. It's evident through the shaking shadow on the side of the tire.
@NMPros Check your caster angle, should be around 7%. I added a Rust's 3" lift with new rims (4.25 offset and 33 inch tires) and started getting death wobble over some bumps and pavement regularities. I added a set of Fat Bob's Garage extended fixed lower control arms for 3"-41/2" lift. It helped about 80%. Next, I purchased 97-99 Wrangler lower control arm bolts with the eccentric adjustment washer and dialed in a little more caster and the death wobble is gone.
@SourToiletSeat lifted truck big wheeels and stock ,tie rods, ball joint, steering it happens alot with mopar because they use cheap steering components.
BTW, Don't thank ME "assface2000". I haven't dug very far into this conversation but from what I've read, I didn't suport your argument at all. "Death Wobble" is a symptom of a loose track bar and can only be solved by fixing the track bar issue(s). Tires have got nothing to do with death wobble.
Do you even know what perpendicular means? If your track bar is anything close to being "perpendicular" to your axle, my guess is that you've just been in a severe accident or a vandal/modern artist tack-welded it that way. A third option is that you have invented a custom track bar, roughly 12-14 inches long with custom mounting points. A non-custom, normal-length track bar mounts roughly parallel regardless of the lift (with a very small angle....i.e. a lot less than a 90 degrees).
It usually happens to JKs when people install a lift kit and then tighten everything down when it's still on the lift. This causes binding when weight is placed back on the components. Another issue is the undersized stock bolts(14mm) used to secure the track bar. If the bolts aren't kept to torque specs(250 lbs/ft), the bolts will wallow out the track bar mounts.
track bar is what causes death wobble. jk's are bad about it after the lift. Try to recenter the axle and get the track bar more perpindicular to the axle. That will fix the main problem but you should check all other components now because they get the crap beat out of them when this happens.

@asssface2000 Tires can't cause death wobble like this. If you're thinking you had death wobble and tires fixed it then you have never experienced death wobble. I bought a fully adjustable track bar from rusty's 4x4 for my xj and it works great. No more death wobble.
@gravesfiend138 I have a 3.5" lift on my 00 Cherokee, and but new track bar and that fixed it, I bought my jeep with the lift on it.... they left the stock track bar... so the local suspension shop went through and put an adjustable track bar and moved with bracket and stabilizer. Have never had the problem since. and that was 50,000 miles ago.. ;)
@gravesfiend138 oh now its a competion over who had the worst death wobble? theres more than 1 thing that can cause it buddy. sorry to burst your expert opinion bubble.
@asssface2000 True death wobble is caused by a worn track bar, nothing else. The actual definition of death wobble is wobble caused by a worn/loose trackbar or trackbar bushings in a coil sprung front suspension system. There is not such thing as death wobble caused by tires. you had a fucked off tire. End of story. Not death wobble.
@asssface2000 Death wobble means that your front axle is moving back and forth... Nothing CAN cause that except a worn track bar or worn track bar bushings. You can try and tell yourself that you've had death wobble but for everybody else on the roads sake, I hope you never do.
@asssface2000 As far as "expert opinion", I'm the one on NAXJA that EVERYBODY goes to about death wobble. I'm the one on Jeeps Unlimited forum that EVERYBODY goes to for death wobble... I know what it is, I know how it's fixed, I know what causes it. If you changed tires and it went away, you have never experienced death wobble.
@gravesfiend138 im starting to think YOU dont know what death wobble is. its self-feeding. so you cant possibly imagine a scenario where poorly balanced, oversized mud tires could be just enough to get a death wobble started that might not otherwise be there? yup your an expert alright.
@asssface2000 Death wobble is a specific happening... As I explained before. Death wobble is not a technical term, it's a term describing a specific problem. Your problem was an out of balance tire. Not a bad/loose track bar or track bar bushing. You can argue until you're blue in the face but you can't prove fact wrong.
@asssface2000 No, you're the stupid one.. trying to say tires fixed a track bar issue. Maybe you should do some research on the origin of the term death wobble. It was coined by Jeep owners years ago and stolen by idiots that thought their unbalanced tires caused death wobble. Seriously, kid... Go try and troll on somebody that you can prove wrong.
@gravesfiend138 i already explained it to you. your the troll stalking me bitch. go stuff your snap-on timing light up your ass and pretend its me mounting you.
@asssface2000 No, I explained it to you. You're a retard and have show to the world exactly how stupid you are. I'll say it again... Death wobble is a term coined by jeep owners to describe the VIOLENT SHAKE from a worn track bar or track bar bushings.
@asssface2000 Is there a point to that comment? I've owned a shitload of you. Stop making yourself look like a moron, you've already been proven wrong at the very least 5 times on the subject of death wobble.
@gravesfiend138 you havent proven anyone wrong tard.but oyu have proven that you are the most gullable bitch on youtube. ive been toying with you the whole time, lol fucktard
@asssface2000 That's a wonderful attempt to redeem yourself there, but judging by the arguments ive seen on other videos, you're a flat out moron and try this tactic every time. Shut your asshole and move on.
@gravesfiend138 jane you ignorant slut. any worn steering component, or several slightly worn can cause death wobble. your a 16 year old kid who thought he knew jeeps. from now on death wobble is when your gay lover pulls out and squirts in your face.
my brother told me about how he almost went off the road one time on the interstate. then like a month later he tells me they call it the death wobble. i didnt beleive him. he has a 99 wrangler stock so i guess its old parts but anyways this is the craziest thing ive ever heard of. i keep telling him its going to kill him and he says "Yeah.... probably." crazy.
its ur ball joints and your track bar and the dude below me @jonthepiano the reason you have death woble is because if u lift wj's they get it because of the all time 4wd, there is a way to change that to just buy a 241 and put the guts in your 249 from the 241

Check the Axel run out....when the axel has no load on it and is free rotating, this error of concentricity (eccentricity) creates a chaotic vibration that once starts is difficult to stop. this is just a start the whole front end needs to be shored up!
@cmucky It's nothing to do with maintaining the vehicle, dumbass... It's a poor component design. The track bar should NEVER wear out. The bushings, sure... But majority of death wobble is caused by a weakened and flexing track bar.
i have a 2000 cherokee classic.140,000 on it.BFGoodrich All Terrain KO's 3 ply side walls.i was taking 50 mph corners S curves at 70 no problem.on my way home today.no wobble.but at 90 if i slow down to fast it will wobble.so i dont get the death wobble thing.
In reality, no one would pay that. They would look for another site that had it for free. Advertising makes this world go round. Can you imagine the bandwidth costs that Youtube has every month?
@FriscoJarretts well then you must not have a job because when you do have a job, 20 bucks is a drop in the bucket of one years pay. you still get allowance from your mommy?
LOL!!! No... Closer to retirement. You must have not studied economics in college. The masses will use a product for free, but the minute a cost is induced they flee. Advertising is a good way to offer free programming (IE local TV). Not sure why you must start hurling insults.
my one rim on a tire was off balance would that started a death wobble at 45 to 60 and i got new tires on it and i put it on my death wobble tire for spare...i havent had any death wobbles currently,
jeeps are bad about this, mostly the front ends. know of three other jeeps other than my own that have had this problem. spent alot of money trying to fix it to.
Why isn't the right end of the stabilizer bolted to the frame? the entire axle assembly is shaking under the car. Would the installation of a stabilizer BETWEEN a framerail and the axle help?
i had brutal death wobble on my 97 xj it was supposudly my track bar, i replaced that and its still there, the new track bar made everything else feel shitty so i replaced the tie rod, and draglink as well as got an alignment and the ball joints/ u joints.. rides like a dream now..
@thelastcowboy1988 It's your front tires pointing in towards each other. There has to be some toe in otherwise you get a lot of bump steer and it tends to wander more.
i was wheelin in a jeep cherokee w/2in lift today im fixin to buy with a horrible death wobble, any estimate as to how much to fix? i think its combination of tie rod end and wheel bearing
I replaced the steering stabilizer on my Jeep. Its the little shock absorber device you can see in the video. Mine was completely blown. Problem gone after replacing.
@davec3487 I also did that. About 3 years later the wobble came back, I'm guessing the stabilizer failed again. Also noticed by track bar was messed up. Replaced that and now it is like brand new.
@davec3487 death wobble is caused by something not being "right", just because you put a new stabilizer on it and it stopped wobbleing does NOT make the problem "gone". its just hides it a loittle longer.
@davec3487 death wobble is caused by something not being "right", just because you put a new stabilizer on it and it stopped wobbleing does NOT make the problem "gone". its just hides it a little longer.
The DW on my Jeep occurs under speeds of 30mph(pothole, etc), but highway speeds is smooth. 4" lift, 35's, already upgraded the track bar, stabilizer. Any ideas?
@griffinrunner If you have a TJ, Make sure you have the stock pitman arm on, Not a drop arm. Is your front end 100%? 99% of DW the cause is the track bar. If you still have DW, put your jeep on stands and let your suspension flex down and take your TB out, Then install it with every thing in line and a floor jack to line up the axle and bar. Even though its tight sitting in the drive way, It will wobble under travel. In simple terms its bound up when ditting compressed. Good luck
@miked90123 i gotta laugh all you "jeep" guys always go for suspension or steering parts when it comes to DW.but nobody ever stop and thinks about the canadian casted rotors.thats what caused my DW changed the rotors to us made and it stopped everything
hmm my track arm is broke and it dont do that to me.... yes I know why am I driving a jeep with a snapped trackarm its my only way to work im not dumb just poor.
in my case it was the Track bar being loose, a shady shop I went to, loosened the track bar mounting plate bolts !!!! that was f'kin scary on the highway!
its the tires i had this problem on my 2001 chevy silverado. it was because i had bias ply tires on my truck that is most likely the reason all the lifted jeeps have this problem. its because the y lift them then put super swampers on and they dont have the proper steering shock absorbers. you need to get steel radials. even bfg mud terrains come in both regular bfg m/t's and bfg m/t radial's in order to run bias ply tires you need like 4 skyjacker steering shock absorbers. good luck to yous
strange question. I am experiencing some driveline issues to which I would like to video tape, and I am wondering how you went about securing your video camera to the Jeep?
Both of those comments I just left refer to stock Jeeps! If your jeep is lifted it is a whole different deal. If you need to take it to a shop tell them you have death wobble, if they look at you funny, or don't know what you are talking about, go to another shop! BTW Warped brake rotors will act as a trigger for DW, they do not cause it on their own there is certainly another problem.
In my experience with Dw it is a culmination of front end maladies. Check your wheel bearings, ball joints(upper and lower), control arm bushings(upper and lower), even your brake rotors. Wheel balance and properly Inflated tires are important as well. Front end alignment can play a part too. If you have DW Chances are more than one of these problems are working together to cause the violent shake. Of course, first make sure all of your suspension components are properly torqued.
DW is a tricky little bitch to diagnose because many factors are at play. The stabilizer , or, sway bar is used to control body roll through turns not likely the cause of DW. Start by spending some time getting to know your front end. The track bar is what is supposed to control lateral movement in your axle and many times wallowed out bolt holes and bad bushings can make dw a lot worse, but is not always the cause.
Jeeps are a Mechanics dream because they Make money of them sons a bitchs LMAO, i have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with a Death Wobble when i go like 100MPH im Thinkin i gotta change the SWAY ARM BUSHING? any one had this Problem and got it Solved??
I love how everyone is so sure about it coming down to just one part to fix it. It CAN be just one part to fix it( track bar, stabilizer, alignment, balancing, wheel bearings, etc.) but it could also be a combination or all of the above. Find out where the play is on these parts and save yourself time and money by figuring out what YOUR specific problem(s) are. AND DONT EVER GO 110 IN YOUR JEEP.
Hey guys, i got a 1996 Jeep cherokee inline 6. and i have a Death Wobble at about 110Mph it wobbles crazy its scary. Im just wondering What exactly i need to do to Fix it.
Thanks guys. It was the toe in. It was about 0.5". I set it back to about 1/8" and now it only has a real slight vibe at 50mph. It will never progress to the full DW like it did before. Its been a while now with no issues.
@tricktuners when u set yer caster make sure it has a .5" pull to the left mixed with the 0" the camber is sposed to be at. the caster should be at 7'-. make the wheels toe in just a wee bit, to compensate for wheel deflection. and get a stronger steering stabilier. also give them wheels hubs a good look over. theyre notorious for crappin out. just did some on a 2000, made ALL the difference.
wheel bearing hub, alignement and stablizer shock but it looks like the stablizer u have on there is good and new hope that helps i've workd on jeeps all my life and those r the three most common and they play together
Thanks for that firefighterloon. I've been getting some DW in my stock 95 XJ, I assumed it was the wheel bearing hubs and I am getting them replaced today. Hopefully you're right.
I know this is a response to a pretty old comment, but did this end up fixing your problem? I have a 95 xj that gets a wobble at ~70mph when i hit a small bump.
@Doomraga lol, quite some time ago indeed. That particular jeep is now totaled due to an accident. However no, it did not fix it. New tie rod ends are what fixed it.
My jeep started to do this..I replaced the ball joints, and she was alot better! OIIIIIIIO

The actual definition of death wobble is wobble caused by a worn/loose trackbar or trackbar bushings in a coil sprung front suspension system. There is not such thing as death wobble caused by tires. you had a fucked off tire. End of story. Not death wobble.
gravesfiend138 2 months ago
@gravesfiend138 lol OK
asssface2000 2 months ago
@asssface2000 Death wobble means that your front axle is moving back and forth... Nothing CAN cause that except a worn track bar or worn track bar bushings. You can try and tell yourself that you've had death wobble but for everybody else on the roads sake, I hope you never do.
gravesfiend138 2 months ago
@asssface2000 As far as "expert opinion", I'm the one on NAXJA that EVERYBODY goes to about death wobble. I'm the one on Jeeps Unlimited forum that EVERYBODY goes to for death wobble... I know what it is, I know how it's fixed, I know what causes it. If you changed tires and it went away, you have never experienced death wobble.
gravesfiend138 2 months ago
@gravesfiend138 im starting to think YOU dont know what death wobble is. its self-feeding. so you cant possibly imagine a scenario where poorly balanced, oversized mud tires could be just enough to get a death wobble started that might not otherwise be there? yup your an expert alright.
asssface2000 2 months ago
@asssface2000 Death wobble is a specific happening... As I explained before. Death wobble is not a technical term, it's a term describing a specific problem. Your problem was an out of balance tire. Not a bad/loose track bar or track bar bushing. You can argue until you're blue in the face but you can't prove fact wrong.
gravesfiend138 2 months ago
@gravesfiend138 now your just being fucking stupid.
asssface2000 2 months ago
@asssface2000 No, you're the stupid one.. trying to say tires fixed a track bar issue. Maybe you should do some research on the origin of the term death wobble. It was coined by Jeep owners years ago and stolen by idiots that thought their unbalanced tires caused death wobble. Seriously, kid... Go try and troll on somebody that you can prove wrong.
gravesfiend138 2 months ago
@gravesfiend138 i already explained it to you. your the troll stalking me bitch. go stuff your snap-on timing light up your ass and pretend its me mounting you.
asssface2000 2 months ago
@asssface2000 No, I explained it to you. You're a retard and have show to the world exactly how stupid you are. I'll say it again... Death wobble is a term coined by jeep owners to describe the VIOLENT SHAKE from a worn track bar or track bar bushings.

its ur ball joints and your track bar and the dude below me @jonthepiano the reason you have death woble is because if u lift wj's they get it because of the all time 4wd, there is a way to change that to just buy a 241 and put the guts in your 249 from the 241

Check the Axel run out....when the axel has no load on it and is free rotating, this error of concentricity (eccentricity) creates a chaotic vibration that once starts is difficult to stop. this is just a start the whole front end needs to be shored up!

People not maintaining a vehicle properly. They would rather bitch at the company because they expect shit to last forever.
cmucky 4 months ago
@cmucky It's nothing to do with maintaining the vehicle, dumbass... It's a poor component design. The track bar should NEVER wear out. The bushings, sure... But majority of death wobble is caused by a weakened and flexing track bar.

@thelastcowboy1988 It's your front tires pointing in towards each other. There has to be some toe in otherwise you get a lot of bump steer and it tends to wander more.

I replaced the steering stabilizer on my Jeep. Its the little shock absorber device you can see in the video. Mine was completely blown. Problem gone after replacing.
davec3487 1 year ago
@davec3487 I also did that. About 3 years later the wobble came back, I'm guessing the stabilizer failed again. Also noticed by track bar was messed up. Replaced that and now it is like brand new.
rhino18 1 year ago
@davec3487 death wobble is caused by something not being "right", just because you put a new stabilizer on it and it stopped wobbleing does NOT make the problem "gone". its just hides it a loittle longer.

The DW on my Jeep occurs under speeds of 30mph(pothole, etc), but highway speeds is smooth. 4" lift, 35's, already upgraded the track bar, stabilizer. Any ideas?
griffinrunner 1 year ago
@griffinrunner If you have a TJ, Make sure you have the stock pitman arm on, Not a drop arm. Is your front end 100%? 99% of DW the cause is the track bar. If you still have DW, put your jeep on stands and let your suspension flex down and take your TB out, Then install it with every thing in line and a floor jack to line up the axle and bar. Even though its tight sitting in the drive way, It will wobble under travel. In simple terms its bound up when ditting compressed. Good luck
miked90123 1 year ago
@miked90123 i gotta laugh all you "jeep" guys always go for suspension or steering parts when it comes to DW.but nobody ever stop and thinks about the canadian casted rotors.thats what caused my DW changed the rotors to us made and it stopped everything

its the tires i had this problem on my 2001 chevy silverado. it was because i had bias ply tires on my truck that is most likely the reason all the lifted jeeps have this problem. its because the y lift them then put super swampers on and they dont have the proper steering shock absorbers. you need to get steel radials. even bfg mud terrains come in both regular bfg m/t's and bfg m/t radial's in order to run bias ply tires you need like 4 skyjacker steering shock absorbers. good luck to yous

ImportMafia 2 years ago
Both of those comments I just left refer to stock Jeeps! If your jeep is lifted it is a whole different deal. If you need to take it to a shop tell them you have death wobble, if they look at you funny, or don't know what you are talking about, go to another shop! BTW Warped brake rotors will act as a trigger for DW, they do not cause it on their own there is certainly another problem.
jtp543 2 years ago
In my experience with Dw it is a culmination of front end maladies. Check your wheel bearings, ball joints(upper and lower), control arm bushings(upper and lower), even your brake rotors. Wheel balance and properly Inflated tires are important as well. Front end alignment can play a part too. If you have DW Chances are more than one of these problems are working together to cause the violent shake. Of course, first make sure all of your suspension components are properly torqued.
jtp543 2 years ago
DW is a tricky little bitch to diagnose because many factors are at play. The stabilizer , or, sway bar is used to control body roll through turns not likely the cause of DW. Start by spending some time getting to know your front end. The track bar is what is supposed to control lateral movement in your axle and many times wallowed out bolt holes and bad bushings can make dw a lot worse, but is not always the cause.
jtp543 2 years ago

I love how everyone is so sure about it coming down to just one part to fix it. It CAN be just one part to fix it( track bar, stabilizer, alignment, balancing, wheel bearings, etc.) but it could also be a combination or all of the above. Find out where the play is on these parts and save yourself time and money by figuring out what YOUR specific problem(s) are. AND DONT EVER GO 110 IN YOUR JEEP.

autobellmyhell 2 years ago
Thanks guys. It was the toe in. It was about 0.5". I set it back to about 1/8" and now it only has a real slight vibe at 50mph. It will never progress to the full DW like it did before. Its been a while now with no issues.
tricktuners 2 years ago 2
@tricktuners when u set yer caster make sure it has a .5" pull to the left mixed with the 0" the camber is sposed to be at. the caster should be at 7'-. make the wheels toe in just a wee bit, to compensate for wheel deflection. and get a stronger steering stabilier. also give them wheels hubs a good look over. theyre notorious for crappin out. just did some on a 2000, made ALL the difference.
90fairladyz32 9 months ago
wheel bearing hub, alignement and stablizer shock but it looks like the stablizer u have on there is good and new hope that helps i've workd on jeeps all my life and those r the three most common and they play together
