Honestly, I think Warlow's Phantom is the most utterly hypnotising. He really elevates the character's music into an almost magical, spiritual realm. The way he sings the word 'Nighttime' at the start of this recording is so rich and deep that it makes me melt every time I hear it. As a matter of fact, he makes the character seem so totally powerful and commanding that it almost works against the rest of the characterisation. He is so completely captivating that Raoul seems like a child.
I had the great fortune of hearing a young Crawford do it live twice in the space of two weeks on Broadway. Warlow is spectacular. I find it difficult to compare greatness, but I think Crawford was better on the highs and Warlow better in the lower range and more powerful. So they can be well compared. Just thank God no one mentions Butler - He was a good as a Spartan.
Heartfelt appreciation to all who have uploaded Anthony Warlow's vocal talents to YouTube. I have only recently discovered many of the rich and vibrant musical gifts Australia has produced and I look forward with great anticipation to my continuing search. But AW is the one to whom I keep returning. His voice speaks to my soul and has enriched my life. God bless!
Some years ago, I travelled to Australia to see "Phantom..." in which Rob Guest was starring. It was fantastic, but shortly thereafter I had the opportiunity to see/hear Anthony Warlow and Sarah Brightman in New Zealand and I awaited the day when I could hear Anthony complete his "Phantom..." contract. That has now happened and it was utterly incredible!!! Sorry fellow kiwi Rob, you stepped into the breach as a star, but Anthony is THE MAN!
@Joomington Whiney-voiced? Please! He's the only phantom that I've heard that doesn't have a really dark tone, and he doesn't use booming vibrato for every note. To me, at least, MC has the ability to sing soft (like an angel) and has the ability to sing loud and powerfully (like thunder). If you've heard of the book, those are the things that Erik can do with his voice. Plus, MC has such a unique and haunting voice, he fits the role of the Phantom perfectly. I respect you're opinion though.
While there have been many tremendous actors as the Phantom. Anthony Walow is by far my favorite! His voice is extrodinary in solid technique, unbelievable range, and a powerful charisma. Mr. Warlow has a gift most singers can dream of having. He studies diligently about not only the demanding scores but the character psychology. Whether it's musical theatre or opera he simply dazzles on stage and in the studio. He's the entire package when it comes to the performing arts. :)
In my opinion Michael Crawford is to this point still by far-and-away the best Phantom. Warlow is an easy second and in my opinion not many others have come close.
Warlow in the most recent Australian production of Phantom is definitely the best Phantom I have heard. He really took the part beyond what I'd heard or seen in any other recording or production. I assume that is what this recording is from?
one probalem with watching the movie and the origanal sound track make it harder to remember his voice, i hate them! thank you for putting a good audio clip of him on, now i will always remember his voice. WE NEED AN AUSTRALIAN SOUNDTRACK RECORDING OF PHANTOM!!!! everyone whos seen it here should really agree1
I hate how that happens.. Aus does need a soundtrack because our cast is just as good as the others.. no.. it was waaay better.. sorry, not trying to be offensive to anyone, its just personal opinion.
agreed a lot of phantoms need a cast recording. and this guy is one of them. Right now I am trying to find on youtube and actual video of his proformance. Cause he has the voice down I want to see the movement. cause a good phantom has good smooth sentual sound and movement. and I have a feeling this guy has both so I want to see it. ^_^ one of the top phantoms. :-)
For this song, his movements are as magnificent as his voice. AW performing MOTN on stage is sensualness personified. He's got that "come-hither" look for Christine down-pat, not to mention the way he uses his beautiful hands. *drool* He probably caused half of the audiences (female half!) to have palpitations! XDDDD
@21gleneagles I do agree, we do need an ACR, but they need to do it like the Les Mis dream cast CSR, you know, like Fantasy Baseball where you've got the best of the best
@21gleneagles I agree we need an Australian version. I grew up listening to the Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman recordings, so its hard to erase 16 years of music, to remember what the play sounded like.
The tone of Warlow's voice is perfectly suited to the roleof Phantom. He's been my favourite classical artist since I was a young kid...and I can't say ive heard any to his superior
I agree. His interpetation of Jekyll and Hyde is the best for me. in this he is amazing, but i kinda have a soft spot for Michael Crawford as phantom hehe, can't say andy is better than Crawford, but damn he's good :)
Finally a good recording of Anthony, anyone who has seen him perform this role live will know that his voice is suited to this role like no other could ever be.
Fantastic!!! I love anthony warlow such a good singer i saw him twice in the Australian tour. As to the MC, AW debate going on here there are very different performers and i believe i cannot choose a favourite. If you have seen one of them perform the role you will be byist. I think that you should just appreciate the two different takes on the role instead of calling one crap or whatever!
I love Michael Crawford. He was the first Phantom and will always remain one of the best, but Andrew Warlow is an excellent singer and he does this role credit. His tone is very balanced and pure, even in his falsetto tones.
You are dissing Michael Crawford "kait4489". The mere fact that you dragged Michaels name into your comment even though you "are not a fan of his" and hes not even in this video proves it. plus have you ever watched Michael in anything, gone to see a concert of his, seen him live in Phantom( which he won a damn lot of awards for ) or listened to one CD of his before deciding. A lot of people love this man around the world including in Australia. the U.K. and America. Respect MC as well as Warlow
i've never been a michael crawford fan. now this is not to disc him as many people in fact are, and he did originate the role. His voice just doesn't do it for me personally. anthony has been and always will be my favorite phantom.
I love how the Phantom is singing "sweet music" while a sinister-sounding organ is blaring in the background and he's belting in a frightening voice. Still, he's excellent.
This is a good version of 'Music' but Anthony's voice sounds better in a studio recording than live on stage. I'm not saying he can't sing...obviously he can but the best Phantom EVER is Michael Crawfor with the late great Rob Guest a close second.
It isn't necessarily so. I think some people who saw Anthony Warlow or Michael Crawford perform might agree. For me, I don't find Michael Crawford sound that good in a recording while I like his live performances better, and when Anthony's voice is in good state he could sound even better than his studio recordings. And in the theatre you've got the live sound effect which makes some people's voice sound better.
Might have something to do with performing for an audience. I personally life that version he sang in concert where he practically whispered "darkness stirs". However, it's nice to hear a clean recording with no applause or background buzz in it.
I like Anthony Warlow a lot and he does a good job on this. I still love Michael Crawfords rendition the best just because MC has a little more sensuality, emotion and is less stiff sounding. But this ain't bad. Both men can sing. Michael just gave me more chills and acting wise he was devastating.
Wow... just... wow. I thought Michael Crawford did the best rendition of this song until I heard this. Is he the guy playing the Phantom now?? In the current Australian tour I mean?? I've got tickets to the final Sydney show, now I desperately hoping this guy is the Phantom. That chilled me to the bone!
OMG! I knew he's the best Jekyll & Hyde I've ever heard, now you're telling me this guy can also play the Phantom?! He likes dark roles, I guess :p they really fit him!
He was the original Aussie phantom. He is famous for dark roles like this, but you know he is also an incredible Gilbert&Sullivan performer. Check out his G&S DVDs. He likes comedies even more, I think.

Ramin & Warlow are the best Phantom's out there next to Michael. <3
