  • this song brightens my day any time :)

Although Horowitz doesn't make much facial expressions, its awesome to see the delight on his face while playing some mind blowing chords!!

  • @ajayajath You mean you don't prefer when lang lang pretends to jerk himself off while playing? You're crazy!

  • Horowitz owns this one too!!!

  • simply fantastic!!

  • szerintem ő az egyetlen zongorista, ahol a szív szinkronban van a technikai tudással!Félelmetesen fenomén,a melléverés le van szarva!

  • Remarkable. Thank you for making this available.

  • its fantastic

  • 5milliószor hallottam másoktól.ö a legjobb

  • that chord at 6.09 knocks me out... we are so happy to have this recorded!

  • wtf with the 13 dislikes???!!!....this is the best execution ever of this masterpiece..!!!

  • was trying to look for a piano music that would possibly make me feel mellow just to sleep.. but it happens to be a WRONG MOVE to click these videos of Vladimir Horowitz.. I cant sleep!! I CANT STOP WATCHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MusicalTenor23 this happens often to me.... :-) every few weeks I pass some hours in a sort of trance...

  • Liszt wrote 9 of these pieces, and pianists always play the same one...

  • he is such a great pianist AND at that time his 84 !!!!!!

  • 1071 like against 13 dislike. This means something! Thankyou Vladimir...

  • i just how it sssssssss...starts storming in minecraft as soon as the song started to play

  • ház ez fantasztikus,"itt" született meg a mű.....

  • Vladimir Horowitz alias "Satan Keyboard" I'm having a protoplasmic reaction to hearing you play... This sumptuous musical achievement will forever be engraved in the history of classical music as one of the most exquisite ever done. Your musical genius is unparalleled and only your thoughts are higher than you. I have too much respect and admiration for you. Your charisma, power, virtuosity, meticulousness and elegance make you a a legendary pianist whose musical heritage is immeasurable. RIP.

  • @Sedik66861 I concur, Horowitz was a 20th Century miracle.

  • I can read sheet music, and i could possibly after months if not years of practice, be able to play the notes of a song like this, but i could never, ever make it sound like this. Horowitz feels this music like no one else, and it transcends through him and his fingers into beautiful sounding music. I however would just be banging memorized notes and would sound nothing at all like this performance.

  • Great Wladmir Horowitz. Remember ever.

  • Extra! Merci!

  • Very fine performance. He feels music the way it should be felt and without all the theatrics that some pianists exhibit to show that they are a part of the notes floating. Great pianists do not show off their feelings; rather, they appear at the tip of their fingers.

  • @nazareth212 Great pianists produce a sound that transcends the live performance and the video camera. No one can say that Glenn Gould or Wilhelm Kempff were not great pianists, though they were expressive with the emotion they felt with the music. Would you say the same with respect to conductors? Toscanini showed little emotion compared to Bernstein. Again, no one would say the Bernstein was not a great conductor.

  • @nazareth212

We can quibble over the preferred stage presence, but the goal of the musician is first and foremost to effectively communicate the emotion and music of the selection to the audience members whereever they may be; whether in the concert hall or at home listening to the vinyl. Horowitz was a master, no doubt, but so were the others.

  • dulce, hermoso!!!

  • "There are three kinds of pianists: Jewish pianists, homosexual pianists, and bad pianists." - Horowitz

  • @thejesusfreak919 Liszt was a white heterosexual man, do you think he was a bad pianist? Why would you say that do you hate white people? White hater?

  • @lordlactose

Haha you think I said this?...Why do you think I put the "-Horowitz" at the end? Horowitz said it, ask him.

  • He plays it so cool and so relaxed. Its GREAT. Thank you, Horowitz!!

  • i was horowitz in my past life. So thank you everyone for the comments =). Vladimir horowitz.

  • SOOOO glad I found the sheets to this ^^

  • I keep hitting replay. I love it.

  • if you can't feel the music, it won't translate. Try being a robot and play Beethoven's 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata...impossible! seven minutes of good luck!

  • He's just hitting the keys ; /, try to listen to the very beginning of this piece "not-knowing" it's Horowitz.

  • @DaronSX just hitting the keys... ? u call that JUST hitting the keys

  • This song made me happy :)

  • O what an example of experiencing the human condition! How wonderful to have the senses to perceive greatness. Thankfully, we have the media preservations of his great talent for all eternity, evermore, so the the great talent of Horowitz will exist forever.

  • I need to stop listening to Horowitz first. It's hard to like any other performance after hearing him.

  • @wantrice I'll second that! I started listening to Horowitz about 15 years ago.... any subsequent pianists tend to fall by the wayside! The only exception is perhaps Sviatoslav Richter in my personal opinion.

  • @wantrice He was a magician on the piano!

  • @wantrice well, our taste will definitely be in favor of Horowitz after listening to his music.. but, i think we should just accept that each artists has their own uniqueness and everyone is trying to prove their artistry through their interpretations.. just listen to them and see the story or anything what they want to tell us through their music.. maybe then, you will find the enjoyment in listening to other pianists or artists.. trust me.. iv been in that situation.. ^_^

  • 1:19

He was True Master of Dynamics!Sublime Poetry

  • The most perfect Performance of the piece I ever heard

  • the people who were ther are lucky :) what a performance !!

  • He shows arthritis what's up!

  • 12 people made a misclick

  • It's a pleasure to watch this.....never forget....

  • Ha! A B flat sneaked in at 1:15 ;] Should've been just the A

Well. That's all negative critique I could possibly come up with :) Horowitz is amazing.

  • Such Pianissimo skill. What a master :-)

  • I have no idea why, but Horowitz's piano was in my town

I got to play it for like 2 hours.

    Seriously. Amazing.

  • @kevindoupiano

    and how did it play?

  • its amazing

  • "lots of fingers but not much upstairs" - please cite your source for this VERY specious statement

  • brahms met liszt and commented afterward; "lots of fingers but not much upstairs". WIth music this lovely it shows that intelligence is not a critea for good musicianship, rather its all about lucid communication, not truth understanding and then expressing which would require shakespeare-esque insight. Insight is useful, but honesty is paramount.

  • @jewmeltintheovens You can bet your arse he was intelligent as well..

  • what a brain with 84 years!!!

  • P....n! C'est qui les douze mecs qui n'aiment pas?

  • I watched alot of his performances and at the end of each one he always rubs his nose.

  • Горовиц... величайший пианист...кто щас так сыграет...

  • Horowitz at his most charming and magical - a marvelous performance.

It is also fascinating to watch how his hands 'live' in the depth of the keyboard (over the black keys) more so than most pianists, making his relatively flat hand posture possible.

  • the ending is van horowitz :)

    rip maestro.

  • Unbelievable...seems like such intelligence and insight is not humanly attainable.

  • what score is he using? that one on imslp is not the same. did he again put in his own notes :D?

  • @Curby23523

i had the same problem, but there are actually two versions on imslp..! it was liszt himself who revised it during his life..

  • @genomos90

Well i think its the first version but he forget to play a little part an adds some own notes at the end. In Vienna he did not forget the part he did here

  • @Curby23523 this IS in Vienna dumbass. And he didn't forget anything. The ending is his own touch.

  • Incomparable.

  • Me encanta Horowitz!

  • once in a lifetime..

    Horowitz....Vienna.....live concert....

    Oh..to be there..

  • This combination of protest and reconciliation couldn´t be expressed more beautifully. A historical moment of musical understanding.

  • He really knows how to accentuate his notes in all the right places. He is the greatest pianist ever lived!

  • he's so inspirational makes me feel like playing this song

  • He has all the charisma that Lang Lang misses.

  • how someone can dislike this music : |

  • 6.08 to the end.... the best... so sweet!!

  • Is this the first of second version? Does anyone know?

  • This is so lovely! Thank you Horowitz for playing this piece to beautifully!

  • Meravigliosoo... non ci sono parole per descriverlo...

  • 8 mentally-challenged people gave this video thumbs down... :-/

  • O my... i cant explain feeling... at at 6:27 its part where you doing something while you allready crying, you doing it against your will, but you know that that is the write thing to do....

  • At 6:05 look at Horo face, its like a long story came end and that end is something that cant be explain through words, its mixed emotion that brings mind to pain because he can not recognize those over human and super natural emotions ... is that tear form Horo eye?

  • Look at 5:55 its like he open another dimension with that soft and full bas ....

  • Look at 5:17 how he makes discant scream with those seconds in octaves! i dont know are those ones wroted or he added them naturaly? ;)

  • Liszt know how to make grand pieace and just big, BIG BIG and that BIG after Liszt sounds more BIG!

  • as charming as ever, volodya!

  • Comment removed

  • Horowitz has the best take on this piece. His dynamics are just heavenly! I shall bow down to the master!

  • the tones are still singing, even in ppp. cool guy.

  • why does it say liszt /schubert?

  • @shanelolz in the title?

  • @shanelolz

the "original" piece is from schubert. liszt changed a few notes and also lenghtened it..

  • @genomos90 just few notes you say - haha!

  • And the greatest pianist of all time is..............

  • @cbertelle Liszt ;)

  • @cbertelle Chopin? LOL just kidding

  • if i was this steinway over there... i would let no one else to touch me again :)))

  • God bless him.

  • Hail this guy? c'mon hes clearly awsome player...... Arcadi Volodos imo... he could duplicate this easily so what.... overall... awsome performance... i dont hate.. im just appriciating good music

  • Amazing music !!!

  • Splendide

  • Pure magic!

  • Magical performance..

  • yay for horowitz hes the best piano player

  • I love how he doesn't make flourishing movements to attempt to enhance the feeling of the piece; no swaying back and forth and moving his head about like some pianists, to make it look as if he's having an orgasm. He is concentrated on his excellent technique, and his fingers express the feeling of the piece on their own.

  • @skaudie true, but you know the funny thing is that if you read about Liszt (my favorite composer) it seems that he was extremely dramatic in almost every way on occasion, yet he was known as the greatest pianist of his time... some argue of all time but that's impossible to confirm obviously.

  • @skaudie You know, most pianists don't sway and move their heads because they're trying to enhance the music's feeling. You make it sound like some soulless attempt to appear a better musician, when they're really just...well, dancing.

  • @skaudie I think those are subconcious movements some pianists do when they completely immerse themselves in a piece. But I agree that it is refreshing to see this after watching Lang Lang throw his hands through the air and make other eccentric movements.

  • @skaudie I agree. I went to a concert this spring in Dallas where a Russian woman played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. She played well of course, but the constant bodily movement and facial expressions struck me as being very frequently obscene (which of course literally means "off stage", since that kind of thing is not supposed to be seen in public). And of course it's apparently mandatory nowadays for a female performer to dress seductively. Where have all the ladies gone?

  • @skaudie -He is cunning He sits silently at the piano like paralyzed. When he decides that he has kept them (the audience) waiting long enough-he finally begins to play.A very clever and effective tactic.

  • he has long nails, isn't it opposite the rule...anyway i don't care,he played it so beautiful

  • What a great piece and performer.

  • which it truly is

  • incredible is a comment.

  • I decided I'll learn this piece after hearing only the first few seconds.

I will suck nevertheless. but worth a try.

  • no comment....incredible

  • I'm sure he can't play play the piano the loudest - but he's definately the man to play this instrument the softest.

  • My God! The color, dynamics, strength, delicacy, fun, everything is there, still. What an exceptional lifetime of musicmaking.

  • the applause at the end nearly blew out my eardrums =)

  • Only Horowitz heard this kind of applause-white lightening!

  • wow

5:00 - 5:30 you can really tell the difference between the levels of dynamics

rediculous controll. horrowitz will never die

  • goosebumps

  • flawless...

the ending was genius, better than the original one

  • There are no words, pure magic!

  • no comment ...is so pure and perfect ... i think we can't tell nothing bad about Horowitz's music !!! Great

  • Phenomenal. I just sat here, spellbound.

  • The old master could still produce miracles of pianism in his 80s. Wonderful!.

  • Especially in his 80s! The wisdom of a whole pianist's life concentrates in these incomparable interpretations.

  • Fabulous piece and performance. Wonderful pianistic ability even near the end of his life.

    Thankyou Franz Liszt.

    Thankyou Franz Schubert.

    Thankyou Maestro Horowitz.

  • great performance by our GREAT maestro! :D

  • did he change the ending ??

  • Piece I main of course ;) excuse me

  • WOUW ... never know what the name of composer whas of this song .. Really loved it .. it's a standart tune on my digital piano but never know it whas this one ... LOVELEY !! ... and like always Horowitz plays amazing !

  • Horowitz dünyanın insanlara sunduğu nadir piyanistlerden birisidir...

  • Un grand homme

  • hey gay's listen to this,- from 6.40 onwards,- he was almost 84 and died just 2 yrs later,- simply amazing..none like him,- esp at this age....

  • This piece is so unbelievably emotional.... I don't know any other interpretation, but I don't think any other other pianist could make me cry (and i'm a man, and men don't cry...) as passionately as you can, maestro Horowitz... You are by far the greatest pianist this stupid little planet has been able to produce....

  • That is just beyond beautiful,,,, I am speechless...

  • horowitz .. you awesome ... am amazing because your hand is so smooth on piano .. forza horowitz .. this is the best scene i ever love on your career <3

  • The Master!

  • the comments, like vacuous blowflies, dart around the actuality of the piece, which is si Schubertian ... .

  • Horowitz can draw such a thick sound out of that old Steinway. Each finger tells the story and exacts just the right amount of pressure to the keys under the masterful direction of Horowitz ears. You can only play up to what you hear.

  • From the bottom of my heart, this perfomance is very thrilling!!! I thank this video!!!

  • Amazing tone quality.

  • ...look at his hands, very gorgeous and just made playing the piano. :-)

  • Stupid comment...and inaccurate. Go practice

  • horowitz was the emperor of pianissimi .

with or without the pedal .

  • @tchebinai71

Horowitz was the emperor of everything between ppp and fff, in my humble opinion.

  • LOL to that comment !! Thumbs up !!

  • What's ppp and fff?

  • pianississimo and fortississimo

  • and of course all in between... :-)

  • @demosj pppfff w/e ;)

  • @tchebinai71 ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY ONE. THE PIANO MASTER. He has a black belt.

  • @tchebinai71 absolutly true

  • oh there is some Liszt in there too

    they fooled me

    Haha!

  • wow! Astonishing how Horowitz ans Schubert will never end to amaze me!!

thank you a million for the upload

  • kinda star wars feeling :D

  • Transcendental performance worthy of Schubert and Liszt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The one and only.

  • he was, is and will always be....THE MASTER!

  • Not necessarily, he plays all of the real masters creations.

  • Simply astonishing!

  • He's the best!

  • I admire the cascading effect Horowitz executes at the end immediately preceding the scale.

And this piano (forgot which serial number) has an action of 56 grams. Just for comparison the keys of my piano are 72. That makes it even MORE difficult to play as softly as Horowitz does. Truly a master.

  • they also removed the stop from the soft shift and over voiced one side of the hammers....this is apparantly not folklore and I personally believe the volume of an action with 19-20 lb. hammer mass couldn't be manipulated ,like this ,any other way(just my opinion)

  • True True True! Hes amazing!

  • i'm not saying at all that this is the reason why horowitz is good, but the way he plays so fast is cause he had the piano hammers filed down so that at the lightest touch they would hit the strings. nevertheless, he is a GOD of piano. omg i love watching him

  • But wouldn't that require even greater control?

  • yea, thats why he plays so fast tho, haha.
