It is a strange feeling, now, at age 71. The only thing that I remember about Christmas 1966, was that I was only five weeks away from the flight home. Can't recall seeing any decorations in the DaNang area, even though there probably was some. All the faces in the video are just kids--many no longer on this earth.
Thanks for the posting of the photos. I remember my 1968 Christmas, I was on a night ambush on Hill 214 over looking the An Hoa River Basin. Our home base, An Hoa Combat Base, was visible that night as midnight passed to Christmas Day the guys at the base put up pop flares. And there I was in the jungle on an ambush; just another day. For many years after coming home Christmas was just another day. It wasn't until I married and my wife "gave Christmas back" to me - thank you dear.
and oh my god the viet cong hid in those churches didn't they, Strange thing about communists and atheists, they don't see anything wrong with hiding in churches if it serves their purpose. don't just read one mans story read many and try talking to a real vet who was there.
I've been reading the life story of Vietnam War veteran Lt. S. Brian Willson just published June 2011. Willson is now one of America's great anti-war activists whose legs were severed by a train bearing munitions as it pulled out of Concord, California in 1987 bound for the Nicaraguan Contras. In the book Willson reveals that American planes frequently bombed Buddhist temples as well as Catholic churches in Vietnam. Ironic that GIs sang Xmas carols as churches were being blown to pieces.
Cu Chi in 1970 looked a lot different and somehow just the same I was in the 86th Signal BN in Cu Chi, My Tho and Ben Tre. In order: Clerk Typing, re learning my MOS and finally working in the CommCenter, although I was an 0520, RTTO.
Cu Chi, Vietnam 1968 Christmas Eve..I volunteered for Sgt. Of The Guard...You see, I'm Jewish..no mortars or rockets or snipers that night..The men were in their bunkers as I made my rounds on the perimiter....Then at midnight, some started sining SILENT NIGHT..it had a domino effect..the song rang out...It still makes me cry when I think back to that time...
AMERICA LOST VIETNAM WAR BECAUSE OF ITS BIASED MEDIA!!!
Since anti-war, liberal American media always focused on American and Vietnamese civilian casualties, and ignored the enemy's casualties and Vietcong's atrocities against its own people as in the case of Hue's massacre of 5000 civilians in 1968, to mislead Americans to become against Vietnam war. Ho chi Minh, founder of Vietnam's communist party once said, " the war is not decided in Vietnam's battle fields but in CBS studio!"
Thanks for the post. I was just reviewing my past locations on Google earth and came across you post. thanks for the post and welcome home, even though you are still in Thailand- Home is where you want it to be.
... and a happy 2012 to all!
