Thank the STARS they don't have access to the character and mecha designs of Macross. It's why all of their half ass attempts (like The Sentinels, Shadow Chronicles, etc) have been all Mospeada based.

The mecha sequences and backgrounds in this were impressive for 1986 when it was made, especially considering it was done by a bunch of halfass inbetweeners. The Macross character redesigns are a complete joke. Either HG made them design them like that or Tatsunoko clearly ripped HG off. This is not the real episode 1 by the way and this footage of the simulator actually comes from the beginning of episode 2. The opening song is the Robotech The Movie main title.

Uh, this was for a Tv series done in the mid-1980s. Its consistent with the production values of other shows such as Red Photon Zillion and so on. Comparing it to modern anime is ridiculous as there is a quarter century technological difference in production.

Wait....What? Are you implying that Macross was not dubbed in English? ADV Films released their own dubbed version of Macross, try watching that. Then maybe you will see the difference between Robotech and Macross. Trust me Ive watched both...well only part of Robotech, I could only get so far then my ears started to bleed at the poor dubbing. If anyone complains about Robotech its the dubbing, its low grade to be honest. The ADV films Dub is definitely A+ work.

Plus Robotech is nothing but changed dialogue that goes off course from the original. The new ADV stays very close to the original dialogue. But the Original Japanese will always be superior to both.

@wolf3037 I did watch both matter of fact all 3, and the new macross voices are ok, but they pale in comparrioson to the Likes of Tony Oliver and Cam Clarke. Japanese voices=bland. So the diolouge is changed a bit in Robotech from Macross, doesnt matter. Its all about the Delivery of the words which the Robotech cast basically runs away with the gold. Not to meniton other than a majority of the Minmei songs The Robotech BGM>Macross BGM.

There were too many failed or cancelled sequel and/or movie attempts, not to mention that none of the video games were ever that well received and that the toys were released only a few months before the series began to go off the air. In short, the Robotech franchise was done in by bad business decisions and poor production standards in the sequel stories. And sad to say, but 80s anime does look a bit dated to appeal to today's fans.

It's really too bad that the Sentinels got canned before it was ever finished. But then again, there were so many things which went wrong with it. First was the sudden devaluation of the dollar back in the late 80s which made the cost of production prohibitive. Then there was the fact that Carl Macek's storytelling was not the greatest after the original series ended and that he had gotten a reputation for excessive cost-cutting methods, which often resulted in substandard visual effects.

Both.  Everybody missed everybody in hyperspace. The Sentinels left Earth after the First Robotech War to try to make peace with the Robtech Masters. Unfortunately, while they were headed to Tirol, the Robotech Masters were headed to Earth. And with nobody on Tirol, the Invid Regent invaded (at least according to what I remember of the McKinney novels). While the Sentinels were fighting the forces of the Invid Regent, Earth was fighting the Masters...

...(in response to startrekowiec's question)...On Earth, when the Robotech Masters flagship crashed into the ruins of the SDF-1 and Khyron's battlecruiser, it released Flower of Life spores, attracing the Invid Regis and her forces. When the Sentinels learned she was headed to Earth, they sent Mars Division (Scott Bernard's group) and Jupiter? (Wolf's group) to stop her, while the rest of the Sentinels remained in the Tirol area. All the Sentinels returned at the end of the Invid war.

actually if i remember the stories correctly, Wolf was sent to warn the army of the southern cross of the masters inevitable attack on Earth and i believe to tell Rolf Emerson to overthrow Leonard(least that what i figured from the book "Before the invid invasion". Lang and them didnt totally realize the regis was heading for Earth until after the invid prisoners started disappearing after they defeated the regent and edwards at Optera. Hope i didnt come off sounding like an a-hole

The animation seems much smoother than the other series in some spots, maybe this wasn't made in Japan...perhaps a U.S. company used the same designs and tried their best to make it look like it was anime, its a pretty good job if so.

This was made in Japan. I believe it was shot on 35mm, a standard for US productions while Japan usually uses 16mm for their animated TV shows and since this was actually meant for US braodcast, 35mm is most likely. Had the series been finished, it would have aired in Japan, but not as ROBOTECH or a sequel to any of the shows that were used to make ROBOTECH.

I mean if you like the way that the original Robotech series looked as far as animation it was much better than Shadow Chronicles, but Shadow Chronicles does have its merits.

they show new footage nearing the end of macross-flashback 2012, but other than that, there's no more footage of Megaroad 01. The creator wrote out in some macross source book that the Megaroad 01 was enroute to the centre of the galaxy when they lost contact with it. and that the story of Hikaru, Misa and Minmei is over with. There could eventually be a mention of megaroad 01 in Macross frontiers, but not sure.

Macross zero had a horrible plot, man birds or whatever they called it? It had Roy Fokker which made it at least semi cool, but it sucked as a prelude to the original macross. Also, the events in Macross Zero have been classified. So it's normal that we never heard about such events in other Macross series, OAV and movies. If you consider all that, Macross Zero fit perfectly in the Macross universe. Only ignorants are saying the contrary. So yes Macross Zero stayed within the MACROSS tradition and universe.

The Shadow chronicles didnt fail. Besides it drawing back in the old fans, new fans have joined the fold and they are doing another movie. Least Robotech-TSC had a world wide store release.
