This is the REK I love. I still love his music but he's kinda become a parody of himself. Kinda like Jimmy Buffet. This is at a time when he was trying hard to get his name and music OUT. Today live, he kinda mumbles and doesn't hold the notes out like he used to. he doesn't seem to have the energy or drive. Still lov'em though.
4:28 YouTube video: Acoustic version of The Road Goes on Forever by Robert Earl Keen Jr, introduced by Nanci Griffiths. January 11, 1956: birth of Robert Earl Keen, American singer.
my wife waits tables at a resteraunt in Kerrville, Tx and REK is a regular there. He was one of her first tables there. She said you would never have known he was somebody. Great guy.
@pib14 i have a friend who waited on his wife and never knew she was REK's wife! they are very low-key in KV. i lived there for 15 years, right down the road from them for 10 years, and never saw them. i did see kinky friedman all the time.
Hey All- I am a songwriter- I have two originals on here with my group The Wallace Brothers.. The Ballad of Archie and Gini and The People We Don't Talk To. Story songs. Please view them if you have a chance.
REK is absoluteky one of my favorite musicians i was raised on him and saw him live for the first time when i was 9 years old. but i am very dissapointed in his new work.
I honestly have to disagree with what you have said. I have been listening to REK for as long as I can remember and I really do enjoy his new stuff. It might not be the same sound that he was doing years ago but remember his first albums were when he was trying to make it in Nashville not to discount them because I still think they are great. I think 'Farm Fresh Onions' and 'What I Really Mean' are very good albums maybe just showing a different side of him. Listen to Mr. Wolf a and Mama Bear.
The band closed out with an acoustic number, no amplification. Wow, what a showman, What a show !
What is what?
If I knew the answer to that, I'd be a junior at Texas A&M
On this vid, check out the turned-up chairs on the tables in the background. Now that is the way to hear your favorite tunes. Closed doors and open taps.
Craig, the Capo is on the 9th fret... transposed w/ chords G-C-D... from E-A-B. He and his former college roommate from Texas A&M seem to really like capoing way up the fret board. Their guitars must have great intonation. His college roommate was Lyle Lovett, who at one time sang harmony for Nanci Griffith in the Blue Moon Orchestra.
oh yes rek definitely wrote this one! great acoustic version here...it sounds good this way and with the full band, complete only with maestro rich brotherton's sweeping lead-guitar work. rek is just great.
Great to see this. I first saw it in the 90s really glad to see it on youtube . Can you tell me the name of the show , and the year it was recorded. thanks again for posting it. Been looking for it for years cheers.

@omegaferretjr What a narrow view of music. Bob Dylan was an imitation Rambling Jack Elliot when he started out. Everyone starts somewhere.

Still the best version of the song although Joe Ely does a pretty smash-up job....

omg is that willie nelson without a beard with them? he looks like Geraldo Rivera with red hair.
REK may be handsome but nanci griffith is without a doubt one of the most beautiful women in folk music.
great song! capo 10th fret, chords are G C and the occasional D chord, simple.
noteart 2 years ago
thanks for the chord observations, but that's definetley not willie nelson. Eyes are too wide, chin too pronounced, nose too big, etc.

Anybody know what fret he has that capo on? And does anyone know what tuning he is in?
bunkman64 3 years ago
If I remember correctly (I used to play this years ago) it's on the 10th with a normal tuning.

@robertsgrasso not sure of the tuning yet, but he's capoed on the 9th fret. Unusual guitar, double-dotted at the 7th,

Every time Willie sings someone elses songs he screws them up.

Perhaps the greatest story song ever. If you can get Willie to sing one of your songs you have definitely made it. No chorus just a refrain.

this is not his song.... the highwaymen did it first. johnny cash waylon, kriss kristoferson and willie

Wrong. They did it well enough - boy, KK's voice is ROUGH - but it's REK's.
