  • holy shit he looks young in this vid

  • @johnamble Probably the early 1990s

  • Great rendition of a great song

  • the road does go on forever i guess we<ll just have to see about the party ihope it does cause im ready stanhall58

  • is this Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption?

  • wow they were young here.

  • Great Musician and great Aggie WHOOP!!!!

  • Excellent musician,REK,this is a truly great song:)

  • This is the REK I love. I still love his music but he's kinda become a parody of himself. Kinda like Jimmy Buffet. This is at a time when he was trying hard to get his name and music OUT. Today live, he kinda mumbles and doesn't hold the notes out like he used to. he doesn't seem to have the energy or drive. Still lov'em though.

  • 4:28 YouTube video: Acoustic version of The Road Goes on Forever by Robert Earl Keen Jr, introduced by Nanci Griffiths. January 11, 1956: birth of Robert Earl Keen, American singer.

  • <3

  • DID I DETECT A BIT OF JEALOUSY WHEN THAT GAL INTRODUCED THAT FELLER, HMMM?

  • @jehovahuponyou Namci Grtifith jealous of Robert Earl Keen....I cant ever even imagine that happening : )

  • @cbkspa

    :^)

  • way to go toby....real original

  • @Lockheed562 fuk toby!

  • why would they say that "Bullets in the Gun" was written by Toby Keith and Rivers Rutherford? yeah, you bet, sure, right.....

  • this song would be amazing if bob dylan didn't exist... but if bob dylan didn't exist then neither would this song

  • @omegaferretjr What a narrow view of music. Bob Dylan was an imitation Rambling Jack Elliot when he started out. Everyone starts somewhere.

  • Still the best version of the song although Joe Ely does a pretty smash-up job....

The road goes on forever and the highway never ends.

  • @zamacity61 I think The Highwaymen's version is the best

  • I am looking for his tune "Silver spoons and gold taqila" but cant find it.

  • @LuckyShitZu I believe the song you're looking for is "Crazy Cowboy Dream", it's on the album A Bigger Piece Of The Sky.

    Silver spurs and gold tequilla,

You know they keep me hangin' on,

    Pretty girls in old cantinas,

Give me shelter from the storm...

  • REK is THE best Texas artist/songwriter ever. God Bless Texas!

  • @bluueberry

hey bluueberry, you got Bob Wills, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Buck Owens and George Strait on lines 1-5.....

  • Great Work by REK

  • This is one of the best 10 songs of all time! It may be my favorite.

  • masterpiece.

  • This version is great. What year was this?

  • Best version.

  • Wow - this is old school! I had never seen it before. Robert was young. Thanks!

  • REK... you started my Texan adoption process.

ok.... Willie, started it... but REK Signed THE Papers!

  • How do ya just not love Robert Earl Keen?!

  • The greatest songwriter ever; can't get enough of his lyrics.

  • @ckr78641 the greatest ever? Jesus... u need 2 get out more!

  • my wife waits tables at a resteraunt in Kerrville, Tx and REK is a regular there. He was one of her first tables there. She said you would never have known he was somebody. Great guy.

  • @pib14

If you ask him he isn't anybody! That is what makes him REK!

  • @pib14 lets hear it for the good ole boys from texas

  • @pib14 i have a friend who waited on his wife and never knew she was REK's wife! they are very low-key in KV. i lived there for 15 years, right down the road from them for 10 years, and never saw them. i did see kinky friedman all the time.

  • @coltrain210 should have said hey y'all.. keep up son

  • A True Texan.. Gig' Em REK!

    Love Your Music.....

  • classic

  • Thank you for posting this. I love this song.

  • I saw this on tv when I was a kid and have been waiting long time to see it again. It is as fantastic as I remember.

The guy Nanci looks at at the beginning of the clip...he did a song too. Can anyone tell me who he is and if it is on you tube ?

  • Buddy Mondlock. Click on my username. I've added that video too.

  • REK is absoluteky one of my favorite musicians i was raised on him and saw him live for the first time when i was 9 years old. but i am very dissapointed in his new work.

  • I honestly have to disagree with what you have said. I have been listening to REK for as long as I can remember and I really do enjoy his new stuff. It might not be the same sound that he was doing years ago but remember his first albums were when he was trying to make it in Nashville not to discount them because I still think they are great. I think 'Farm Fresh Onions' and 'What I Really Mean' are very good albums maybe just showing a different side of him. Listen to Mr. Wolf a and Mama Bear.

  • This is classic song. Great song writing it really paints the listener a picture.

  • I love a good story in a great song. REK is my hero.

  • Love ya REK

  • What kind of guitar does he use?

  • collings

  • omg is that willie nelson without a beard with them? he looks like Geraldo Rivera with red hair.

REK may be handsome but nanci griffith is without a doubt one of the most beautiful women in folk music.

great song! capo 10th fret, chords are G C and the occasional D chord, simple.

  • thanks for the chord observations, but that's definetley not willie nelson. Eyes are too wide, chin too pronounced, nose too big, etc.

  • He's still a handsome dude, and a great songwriter.

  • When she's trying to compliment him at the beginning it sure looks like he wants her to shut up.

  • I think he's nervous. I've had that look a lot.

  • Saw Robert Keen, Robert Keen last night.

The band closed out with an acoustic number, no amplification. Wow, what a showman, What a show !

    What is what?

If I knew the answer to that, I'd be a junior at Texas A&M

On this vid, check out the turned-up chairs on the tables in the background. Now that is the way to hear your favorite tunes. Closed doors and open taps.

  • Anybody know what fret he has that capo on? And does anyone know what tuning he is in?

  • If I remember correctly (I used to play this years ago) it's on the 10th with a normal tuning.

  • Thanks for the info, always good to hear from a REK fan.

  • @craigscot67

Craig, the Capo is on the 9th fret... transposed w/ chords G-C-D... from E-A-B. He and his former college roommate from Texas A&M seem to really like capoing way up the fret board. Their guitars must have great intonation. His college roommate was Lyle Lovett, who at one time sang harmony for Nanci Griffith in the Blue Moon Orchestra.

  • @bunkman64 Standard tuning, capo 7. G, C9, D

  • @robertsgrasso not sure of the tuning yet, but he's capoed on the 9th fret. Unusual guitar, double-dotted at the 7th,

  • REK wrote it the highway men ruined it.

Every time Willie sings someone elses songs he screws them up.

  • oh yes rek definitely wrote this one! great acoustic version here...it sounds good this way and with the full band, complete only with maestro rich brotherton's sweeping lead-guitar work. rek is just great.

  • God knows I love you! Ti Amo Bella!

  • Perhaps the greatest story song ever. If you can get Willie to sing one of your songs you have definitely made it. No chorus just a refrain.

  • Wrong. They did it well enough - boy, KK's voice is ROUGH - but it's REK's.

  • REK wrote it and the highway men recorded it. Check the liner notes on the cd.

  • Genius story/song right there.

  • i love getting stoned to this song

  • Great to see this. I first saw it in the 90s really glad to see it on youtube . Can you tell me the name of the show , and the year it was recorded. thanks again for posting it. Been looking for it for years cheers.

  • Think it was a show called something along the lines of 'The Nanci Griffith Show'. Early '90s I think.

  • It was actually from an Anglo/Irish series of 4 shows in 1990 titled 'Town & Country' hosted by John Prine

    Laurie

  • Great video, Robert is one of the best at what he does.

  • awsome

  • one of the best by the great robert earl
