Lockerless-Larry, lol we had a guy like that in our club. always good for testing our recovery & repair skillz, sigh. I remember a guy in a Rover on the extra-rough-swb run at TDS one year ended up like this after he broke a rear axle shaft and rolled back, we always wondered how he got signed up for that run without any locker(s), Hmmmmm...... lol I'm glad it was only their pride that got hurt, you can fix the jeep.
@Disposition446 Gee, thanks capt. hindsight. He could be new to this, and/or just panicked, staying on the brakes is instinct sometime. And LOL at e-wheelers, lulz.
just saw this so jumping in...Yes, he should air down...then he should have used 4 low and tried to CRAWL up the rock. Lockers would help but welding the spiders on a street truck is silly, and this was obviously a street first truck.
It looked to me like he had the wheels turned from the little hill above hit the brakes when it started turning and the proportioning valve kicked in and locked the front brake up. The hill that stoped him above that put him close to the right line when he pivoted . To bad he didnt just try to go up again from where he lost his forward progress. I hope the damage wasnt to bad maybe Hood, fender, and windshield frame? It looks like they werent hurt too bad that is the important thing
hey Larry, i see what your problem is. it's really hard to drive anywhere when your on your roof but i guess you gotta learn from experience. i got some suggestions for you, try to stay on at least 2 of the 4 wheels and one more thing invest in some lockers or weld the spider gears together. that whole stock thing just wasn't cutting it.
It was inexperience. Sorry to see him flip it.. There should have been some one that new what they was doing guiding him. Where was the help? It's like you all wanted him to flip or something. Why didn't anyone tell him not to turn his wheels while going backwards down the hill?
@kidjr27 .......how in the hell do you guide someone that doesn't know the difference between brakes & throttle....or Forward gears vs reverse....i mean this dude had a whole crowd of people tell him the way to go...instead he does exactly the opposite ..OK I'm done flaming...my luck I'll roll my rig this weekend doing something even more retarded..hahahahaha
Tip Over Challenge will quickly sort out who can wheel and who can't. I do think this is the first person I have seen tip over below the actual obstacle though!
Looks like he pushed in too far on the clutch, started to roll backwards, and instead of letting out or feathering the throttle, he panics, pushed all the way in on the clutch and tried to apply the brakes. Just my .02
this could of been done with out lockers. Ya lockers would of helped climb it easer but so would airing down. It looks as if those tires were fully inflated. A hand throttle would of also came in handy instead of trying to work the clutch, brake and gas all at the same time. I am guess thats why he rolled back after he had stopped cause he was un able to work all 3 of the peddles
'Lockers' are locking differentials. When fitted to an axle, then engaged, they prevent the wheels on that axle turning independently of each other, which results in better traction compared with an 'open' (standard) differential.
I climbed that with my 03 Rubicon, just pick the right line and keep your foot off of the clutch. I can,t wait till I can get back out to Moab with my off-road wrecker.
Mines auto, and I hate it sometimes. No power when you need a clutch to dump to get some power.. But also goodside.. no axle break from clutch dumping and all.
@Dief7734 That's not the transmission's fault, it's purely a poor or inexperienced driver. Everytime I go wheeling I give thanks that I'm not driving an automatic...too many failures, too boring.
@nxbrennan Are u kidding! automatic seems to be the way to go. Atleast you have more control, please explain what can go wrong with an auto? I have an 06 rubicon unlimited, with auto transmission, of course I've never been rock crawling in it, guess you can say am inexperienced, but feel pretty confident i could without any problems climb that hill.
@raykaye Well I've done a couple trips to Moab, and I've seen automatics have fluid leakage issues, torque converter issues, shifting issues, and overheating issues. Admittedly, it was all on the only vehicle in the group that was an auto, a Chevy Blazer, so I couldn't say how a Jeep's transmission would fare. But manuals are generally simpler and more reliable. And in my personal opinion, more enjoyable and challenging to use.
Just a couple of thoughts.....a Lincoln locker beats no locker, and now ole Larry can make the buggy he's always dreamed about! In wheelin...there are only two kinds of people.....those that have rolled,.....and those that will..........................
Most likely he would've been able to drive out. The roll wasn't too severe and it doesn't look like the hood was mashed in enough to damage the radiator. If nothing else, just pull the plugs and crank it over to blow out oil in the cylinders and he's good to go.
@tunercars3 Usually when a vehicle is tipped over for that long it's to late. If they would have instantly flipped it back over, he probably could have drove it out.
b24warbaby is correct. I was thinking these people might want to take the opportunity to clean up the undercarriage, maybe get a grease gun out there, you know turn this into a positive thing.....yeah go rednecks!
He didn't back up you idiot, it's a manual transmission and he didn't engage the clutch fast enough to overcome this wonderful thing we all like to call 'gravity'
woa woa.... hating on jeep? no no... first off if you havn't been to moab dont comment about the flipping over in the first place. its actually pretty easy to do. Its alot steeper than it looks on the 3x3" screen here. Secondly these drivers are extremely careless and probably beginners anyway. Ive seen Jeeps do incredible things, and toyotas and ford and chevy's bla bla. Jeeps howeve rcan go anywhere because they are so small.
@CycleSeth ive never seen a video do any justice to show how it really is but why do jeeps always roll over . seen it happen to many times to say its just drivers and not somthing way wrong with the design.
i loved doing that, i always leaned to opposite side that we were tipping cause i wannted my weight to matter on getting the car straight :p the most fun i ever had....my tour guide also went up and down backwards and blinfolded, scariest thing ever, but really cool
all cars have diffs and thier made for going around turns for a better turning radias but when you put lockers on it lock the complete axle so every wheel gets the same power,
ALL cars have to have differentials because you would end up with drive train wind up (half shaft, propeller shaft etc would snap) on a hard surface where a wheel couldn't unwind. i.e around corners one wheel has to travel further depending which wheel is on the out side of the corner so the diff allows the one wheel with less pressure on it to have the drive hence the spin when traction is lost on one wheel per axl. Diff locks stop that but make it hard to steer. Hence most have rear locker :)
lockers lock in the axles so that instead of one wheel spinning faster than the other if one loses traction, the locker makes it so that the axles spin at the same speed as each other, which reminds me that i'm gonna put an Auburn ECTED electronic locker in my 99' Cherokee
Airing down would have been a great idea.. those Tyres sound like they're packing 40 psi at the star... 12 psi would have made it happen nicely.. no lockers needed for that...
It didn't even seem like he was aired down. I have seen aired down Jeeps with open diffs go through there without much trouble. And why the heck did he keep backing up? So glad I went down over Spring Break instead of EJS so I can avoid seeing accidents like that.
im no mechanic but, in diff do you mean differential? anyways all i know is in rock crawling lockers are a must, but this right here was just poor driving, or decision making/lack of experience whatever you wanna call it.
I always thought the second half was where it got the name, but I stand corrected. Obviously the roll was 100% driver error, but blame the rest of the group for getting him in over his head. It's obvious that he wasn't ready for that trail.
OK, so lockers would have got him up almost first time. but there's nothing worng with not having them. It just takes a little time to work out what is the best line etc etc or maybe just turn around and go some other way. This guy just looked dangerous fromt he start. He was rolling back way to fast. I dont think he was even in reverse. Being in gear is one of the most important things you need to remember. Select that gear and keep ya foot off that clutch pedal. This guy had no idea.
Locker would have helped him go UP, but they had nothing to do with him rolling DOWN.
I just did this trail last week and have never had a problem with this spot. We did see some drunks making fools of themselves. We had a noobie along with us that opted to take the bypass, even with the right equipment, because he understands driver skill and experience is as important as the rig.
That is the best joke i have heard in a while. Xterra haha. small engine. electronic four wheel drive. the worst traction possible. and again. your wheel base is also too long. so is your front end. you would have broken your cute plastic bumper and high centered. Get a real off road vehicle please. or spend the 10 grand it will take to make that Nissan worth it.
Considering I did tip over challenge in an 04 Xterra with only 32" BFGs and a shrockworks bumper, your comment is bunk. Most of the time things like this happen at the hands of the driver and knowing their skills and spotters. Anything can get stuck or rolled. Small engine yes, but it manages to get me everywhere I want to be. Besides, what exactly is a real offroad vehicle these days, you still have to modify jeeps and they can't carry 4 people and gear for long trips.
I agree with you on this one. Definitely driver error here. Its a lot tougher than it looks though. Especially in a short wheel base. I did it in an F-150 with a four inch lift with 33's and it took some time, and I didn't have to worry about rolling that pig like a jeep. Just like your weenie Extera won't roll like a Jeep. But I think the old guy was a little slow from the brake to the gas, understandable, it is towards the end of the run and plenty of time to have a few cold ones.
dont back up....nevermind. do whatever you want since u can se back there. thats why old people should keep thier jeeps behind the motor homes. on the highway.lockers, tires, and a lift would have all helped u in this situation...well not exactly the lift but lockers and wider tires with about 13 psi would have go u more grip and lockers would have pulled u forward a lot better. let off the clutch until you feel the jeep wanting to go then let off the brake, u wont roll back.
yet again to many ppl, just bring some buds along that kno what there doin and that have cool heads...if u dont see fire or blood or a flat roof...chances are there ok...but everyone is running around freaking out and not even helping
This is what happens when you dont have the right rig, they should have never chanced it without atleast a rear locker. Its as much of the spotters fault for not warning them to stay off without lockers as it is theirs for backing up? Once your on the hill, your commited
Moab doesn't require red flags but I know that some places like Glamis do. It's supposed to be for visibility, but that generally applies to desert and dune running, not crawling.
that was poor driving. good skill would have turned the wheel the other way. and kept the jeep on all 4's. that and not backing over a hill sideways...
lack of brains my defender would get up that no probs

OK, so lockers would have got him up almost first time. but there's nothing worng with not having them. It just takes a little time to work out what is the best line etc etc or maybe just turn around and go some other way. This guy just looked dangerous fromt he start. He was rolling back way to fast. I dont think he was even in reverse. Being in gear is one of the most important things you need to remember. Select that gear and keep ya foot off that clutch pedal. This guy had no idea.

Dude in the video said it. Lockers would have been ideal - best bet to do stuff like this is make sure you have the proper equipment. :)
ick5521 3 years ago
Locker would have helped him go UP, but they had nothing to do with him rolling DOWN.
I just did this trail last week and have never had a problem with this spot. We did see some drunks making fools of themselves. We had a noobie along with us that opted to take the bypass, even with the right equipment, because he understands driver skill and experience is as important as the rig.

@bdrunner89 Yeah no that was completely the dumb driver's fault, I hope he learned something here.

Jeeps are too heavy to roll without a vehicle involved... Something else the Samurai has over Jeeps.
Tobystacy 3 years ago
Why sit there and let all the fluid run everywhere?? Screw up the Jeep? Get a group a guys and roll it over!
AOO08DOYOUHEAR 3 years ago
He went off the slope at an angle thats why he flipped. Human mistake it wasn't the vehicle

Lol... Jeeps... Stay on the pavement. That looks like an easy trail, too!

I second the motion.
My Stock Xterra could outperform your jeep anywhere!
MariahCareysSon 3 years ago
That is the best joke i have heard in a while. Xterra haha. small engine. electronic four wheel drive. the worst traction possible. and again. your wheel base is also too long. so is your front end. you would have broken your cute plastic bumper and high centered. Get a real off road vehicle please. or spend the 10 grand it will take to make that Nissan worth it.
afsisasotk 3 years ago

But I think the old guy was a little slow from the brake to the gas, understandable, it is towards the end of the run and plenty of time to have a few cold ones.
idahobeachbum 3 years ago
dont back up....nevermind. do whatever you want since u can se back there. thats why old people should keep thier jeeps behind the motor homes. on the highway.lockers, tires, and a lift would have all helped u in this situation...well not exactly the lift but lockers and wider tires with about 13 psi would have go u more grip and lockers would have pulled u forward a lot better. let off the clutch until you feel the jeep wanting to go then let off the brake, u wont roll back.

fadayehiran 3 years ago
yet again to many ppl, just bring some buds along that kno what there doin and that have cool heads...if u dont see fire or blood or a flat roof...chances are there ok...but everyone is running around freaking out and not even helping
tivald 3 years ago
This is what happens when you dont have the right rig, they should have never chanced it without atleast a rear locker. Its as much of the spotters fault for not warning them to stay off without lockers as it is theirs for backing up? Once your on the hill, your commited
miked90123 3 years ago
Money is what works the best, lot's of it... Well AAA, we were just backing out of the garage and....

What's with the red flags?
scotth0 3 years ago
Moab doesn't require red flags but I know that some places like Glamis do. It's supposed to be for visibility, but that generally applies to desert and dune running, not crawling.

Poor Driving and he should have lockers or just know what the hell he is doing...
mudnjeep44 3 years ago
He didnt listen he was told to STOP and not back up anymore lol thats what happens when you get bull headed
Gamingoodz 3 years ago 2
he won , he rolled over first.
paintedhorse1957 3 years ago
that was poor driving. good skill would have turned the wheel the other way. and kept the jeep on all 4's. that and not backing over a hill sideways...
assthemagichat 3 years ago 3
with lockers this wont happen.
would have been up there sippin tea.
DoomBrew420 3 years ago
