I agree with you 100% mountaindogman. I hate biases as well. When I was 6 or 7 I was bit in the face by a Golden Retriever. I have a scar on my nose that is still visible, and I am 23. Almost every pitbull I have been around has not even snapped or bit at me...yet when I get one, I need a female since I already have two male dogs...I wouldn't dare test the waters because as you said in your other response to woodenmajor, pits can be same-sex agressive with other dogs. ;)

Lovablesaddie , i havent owned a pitbull nor would i ,as it would void my homeowner's insurance. i do own a harmless 40lb beaglish mutt who has been viciously attacked by pitbulls on two separate occasions ,one of which vaulted a chain-link fence and the other which snapped a heavy steel chain ..i both attacks it took the efforts of 3 or 4 grown men(including the pitt's owner ) to get the my dog released from the vise like clamp of the attacking animal .i have ample experiences further too ..
@woodenmajor Certain breeds are dog agressive and pits are one but I had a black lab cross that would always attack any breed if it wandered into my yard and a female golden retriever that would do the same and yet I've had rotties that were happy for the company of another dog provided it was ok and not try to dominate my dog but if it did,the dog would get hurt before I could stop it. you probably walked by another dogs yard that caused territorial aggression which is another thing altogether.

@87dowell Up to 2/3 of deaths are pit types, 2/3 of those are kids under 11, and only 5% of all dogs are pits. Do the math. That's what research indicates. Not too hard to put 2 and 2 together unless you"re in willful denial. Breeding for jaw strength and fighting means pits are more dangerous when they do attack because they won't let go. SImple. Pits can't help being born, but people can stop breeding them and owning them around humans if they don't want dead people. They are not toys.

I have been in animal care for over 10 years, and have had the pleasure of caring for many Pit Bulls, only a few have been aggressive. I have also worked with many small breeds (Shitzu, Lhasa Apso, Chihuahua, ect) most of which are aggressive towards both human and other animals. Personally I have been bit by enough of these small breeds to know just how bad they can be. I have never been bit by a Pit Bull.

@nickstan006 if ever two dogs have been playing, these are the dogs. they still used their teeth when they play - he's not chomping down, and the little dog is obviously not getting hurt, otherwise he wouldn't keep coming back for more. biggups you do make a good point but the thing is that there are far more instances of the loving family pit dog going wrong. Not only that, the aggressive behavior of a high strung Yorkie or Chihuahua is quite different from the aggressive behavior of a powerful animal like a Pit Bull. Small dogs when aggressive usually put their cards on the table. You know from the instant you get around them that they may bite you. Pit's cover their intentions well. Many pit's snap and change moods quickly.
i agree with januquarius. smaller dogs have a complex because of their size so they feel like they have to show they're tougher than any bigger dogs. pits/amstaff are very tolerant with smaller dogs and pups. the only reason why people think of the breed as vicious dogs is because of how the media portrays them to be and how bad owners have trained them to do bad things.
This is a great video of the rare instances where a pit is showing it's good side. The problem is that far too many times a pit can be stable and then all of a sudden snap. Years of being bred to fight these dogs can be very unstable. I have seen these dogs be very sweet and loving but there are far too many times when these dogs are in the news for snapping. There should be a legal permit for owning these dogs.

I agree with you 100% mountaindogman. I hate biases as well. When I was 6 or 7 I was bit in the face by a Golden Retriever. I have a scar on my nose that is still visible, and I am 23. Almost every pitbull I have been around has not even snapped or bit at me...yet when I get one, I need a female since I already have two male dogs...I wouldn't dare test the waters because as you said in your other response to woodenmajor, pits can be same-sex agressive with other dogs. ;)

Lovablesaddie , i havent owned a pitbull nor would i ,as it would void my homeowner's insurance. i do own a harmless 40lb beaglish mutt who has been viciously attacked by pitbulls on two separate occasions ,one of which vaulted a chain-link fence and the other which snapped a heavy steel chain ..i both attacks it took the efforts of 3 or 4 grown men(including the pitt's owner ) to get the my dog released from the vise like clamp of the attacking animal .i have ample experiences further too ..

@woodenmajor Certain breeds are dog agressive and pits are one but I had a black lab cross that would always attack any breed if it wandered into my yard and a female golden retriever that would do the same and yet I've had rotties that were happy for the company of another dog provided it was ok and not try to dominate my dog but if it did,the dog would get hurt before I could stop it. you probably walked by another dogs yard that caused territorial aggression which is another thing altogether.

And if you have never owned a pit bull I don't really think you should judge a breed because of bad press. Most dog bites are not from pits look it up. My pits have never shown aggression toward people or other dogs.

@87dowell Up to 2/3 of deaths are pit types, 2/3 of those are kids under 11, and only 5% of all dogs are pits. Do the math. That's what research indicates. Not too hard to put 2 and 2 together unless you"re in willful denial. Breeding for jaw strength and fighting means pits are more dangerous when they do attack because they won't let go. SImple. Pits can't help being born, but people can stop breeding them and owning them around humans if they don't want dead people. They are not toys.

I have been in animal care for over 10 years, and have had the pleasure of caring for many Pit Bulls, only a few have been aggressive. I have also worked with many small breeds (Shitzu, Lhasa Apso, Chihuahua, ect) most of which are aggressive towards both human and other animals. Personally I have been bit by enough of these small breeds to know just how bad they can be. I have never been bit by a Pit Bull.

All dogs mouth each other when playing. biggups you do make a good point but the thing is that there are far more instances of the loving family pit dog going wrong. Not only that, the aggressive behavior of a high strung Yorkie or Chihuahua is quite different from the aggressive behavior of a powerful animal like a Pit Bull. Small dogs when aggressive usually put their cards on the table. You know from the instant you get around them that they may bite you. Pit's cover their intentions well. Many pit's snap and change moods quickly.

This is a great video of the rare instances where a pit is showing it's good side. The problem is that far too many times a pit can be stable and then all of a sudden snap. Years of being bred to fight these dogs can be very unstable. I have seen these dogs be very sweet and loving but there are far too many times when these dogs are in the news for snapping. There should be a legal permit for owning these dogs.
