That's amazing. This logo animation and the spider man landing on the letters is one the most vivid memories I have from my childhood. Of all the shows and logos I probly saw as a kid…this one…seared into my brain. It took me forever to find it. So glad it's posted…and how cool is it that the original animator commented here, too! Crazy. Just so you know how powerful things can get into kids heads when they watch…prime example…and who knew..
I remember reading somewhere that Spidey was originally to be plain silver in this logo...then the colors were added out of acusations that the animators 'never read a comic book in their life' or something to that effect.
Thanks for posting this! I used to work at the studio on Sepulveda in the 80's...seeing this logo sure took me back to the days of Transformers, GI Joe, Muppet Babies, My Little Pony & Jem....Thanks a bunch!
I remember seeing this logo at the end of Muppet Babies also, I didn't even know it was spider-man(guess I was too young)but now that I'm older I can really admire how good the CGI was especially since it probably took months just to make a few seconds of CGI back then. I would say this logo and one of the boss battles in the old Sega Genesis video game Revenge of Shinobi are the 2 most unexpected places I've seen Spider-Man appear.
Spiderman used to creep me out on that logo. I had to turn my head away every time I saw it after Muppet Babies. I didn't like his eyes. When I see this logo now it kicks ass.
Agreed! I had to run out of the room humming loudly so it couldn't steal my soul right at the peak of the trumpets.
To be honest, Muppet Babies nearly creeped me out as much as the logo. A sitter you were never allowed to see above the shins, the random interspersed film footage that absolutely terrified me, and when Rolf became a were-man. *shudder*
As cool as this logo is, I agree. This logo gave me plenty of nightmares as a child. The way it was edited into the end of the Muppet Babies credits upped the scare factor for me. The rising music, the out of tune trumpet, the way Spider-Man's eyes start to glow when he stares at you....
@atomofish I've seen this logo a few times already on here, but chances are I'd at least curl my toes to that exact mix you described. I remember fearing the living hell out of it as a kid. Otherwise, it's impressive CGI for its time.
It's an excellent logo, don't get me wrong, but why did so many production companies end up using a THX-type sound for their bumpers in the mid-to-late '80s? It must've been a sign of the times...
Fox Kids got the rights in 1999 and didn't show it that logo ever since and then, it's on the INK and PAINT DVD collection already. But, they still didn't put that MP logo like that anymore.
How cool to see this here. I animated this logo 20 years ago at Digital (Last Starfighter) Productions. The concept of the chrome Spidey flying through space was bizarre, but that was the assignment. Anyone know where I can find a copy with better resolution?
@majdamage I guess you'll have to find it on DVD, I'm guessing this actually came from the U.K. Dungeons and Dragons DVD release. The resolution may have gone down since it's on YouTube.
@David315842 Thanks for that. The reason for the chrome Spidey was that cg chrome was the rage at the time...the TD and lighting director hated it as much as me so they put as much red and blue light on him as possible!. He's still chrome, but not as chrome as he might have been if left in other hands.
@majdamage Interesting. Personally I thought Spidey was trying to emulate his black alien costume he had in the comics at the time. :D But now come to think of it, he does look more chrome then black. the red and blue of Spider-Man's original costume does give this ident more flair. I also noticed that this ident was set before Marvel Productions was brought from Cadence to New World International.
@David315842 This was once of my first gigs out of school and done around '84. The chrome thing was all Marvel Productions' idea...In retrospect, maybe it wasn't a terrible choice as their was no "skin" for cg characters. Spidey's joints interpenetrate like an action figure. The chrome helps hide the seems.
@majdamage Still it looks rather impressive for a graphic that was designed the year I was born. So yeah I'm the same age as this ident it would seem. :)
@majdamage ...OMG... I loved this as a kid so much... And I think it is still great Artwork. The last time I saw this is almost 20 years ago... Actually I asked myself as a kid because of this Logo, if a silver Spiderman existed in the Marvel Universe.
What are you doing today? Do you have a showreel of other works? It is a pitty that nobody rally knows, who made all those great artwork in the past... but Internet makes connection possible. Small World.
@myjagi A friend of mine says that it's the coolest thing I ever did. LOL...not true, but I guess he loved it as a kid and can't believe a friend of his animated it.
@majdamage Sometimes it does not have to be the most complex thing, to become the most effective piece of work to be created by one or more artists. The thing that really counts is the effect you leave within your audience. This Marvel Logo Advert is not even 10 seconds long and almost 30 years old, but people still remember it. You created an emotional reaction, that is worth more then any short lived CGI overloaded 3D feature film. Thanks for this memory!!!
@majdamage ... and actually.... How much rendertime did you need back than? We work today on some difficult visual effect shots for our final exam film project and the composeting needs a lot of rendertime. What equipment did you use back than?
oh ok. but still, it looks weird. who ever was respondsible for it was making it look silly! i think they should come up with something a little more serious than that funny logo.
No doubt. Spidey was nightmare fuel for kids in the 80s thanks to this logo...and the 60s cartoon was on VHS at the time...which was pretty psycahdelic.
It wasnt until Amazing Friends that I stopped being scared to death.
According to the KRS Logos website, "The reason for the MP logo being absorbed and then mysteriously reappearing is to provide a place to cut the logo so that it is not as long-in most cases, however, the logo is shortened so that only the tail-end of the animation is seen.".
This Spiderman gave me a nightmare when I was very little. Heh, but when I see it now, I think it's great.

@esetorsido Because he's the most popular of Marvel characters. Aside from Wolverine.
