  • Wow, The memories *sheds manly tear*

  • Doesn't look all that different from the Genesis version

  • @b00rk The animations definitely look much choppier.

  • Good souvenir

  • So if the SMS is 8 BIT, alone, then what BIT rate is the sound chip clocked at?

The Sega Megadrive is 16 BIT, and the sound chip is 8 Bit, so what is the Mastersystem it cant be 4 bit can it?

  • @Kyle247l No, it's 8 bit. The Megadrive chip IS 16-bit, but the PCM samples (speech like RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE) are 8-bit.

  • chills down my spine

  • The sprites look so good in this port, really impressive for an 8-bit machine. Its a shame its not 2 player but hell, everyone still sings NES double Dragons praise despite only being 1 player.

    Kick that damn elf!

  • Ax Battler with Extra Choices of Fire & Thunder?

    Only in Golden Axe.....

  • I wish the master system had a better sound chip :(

  • QUE PORQUERIA JAJJA, Y PENSAR QUE NOSOTROS JUGABAMOS A ESTOS JUEGOS Y HOY TENES JUEGOS REALES CON MONITORES 3D

  • Is it possible to play this game in co-op mode (2 players)?

  • @guitartur nope 1 player only... lol... makes no sense

  • ....? I have NEVER seen this version! ...Its like.. Gameboy.

  • Ah this brings memorys back :) My Second SMS Game, i love this Version. The Music is so cool, way better as the Genesis Sound, only the Amiga 500 Version got better Music.

  • so much fuckin epic!

  • 0:30

  • I just got this for £1 :D

  • almost all old games have great music.

  • I always preferred this version to the Megadrive release. Not only does it seem to be pushing the system harder (bearing in mind the Streets of Rage series, I am convinced the 16-bit Sega could have done a better job), but it benefits from not having the annoying extra level and boss round, making it both closer to the arcade experience and a lot less frustrating. Also, by far and away the best 8-bit version. The sprites are excellent, and even the less detailed backdrops are still atmospheric.

  • This version was seriously good.

  • that's fucking badass. a barbarian with an axe on his back and a gun in his hand

  • are you confined to only playing as ax batler?

  • Is this version only 1 player?

  • God I miss these times and these games.

  • Wow! Very impressive for an 8 bit console. I could not tell if you could change your character or not, but I am assuming you could not since the title screen only had the Barbarian warrior and also he could choose any of the magics. A little choppy, but it looked more like the arcade type game play than even the Genesis version, such as more magic to get and more than one riding beast in the first level. I noticed there was no death screams though. Also is there a head bashing with pummel combo?

  • Oh man, are those sprites being drawn to the background? That's some dedication.

  • You don't get to pick the other two characters in this one? Damn.

  • never seen much of this Game, and never knew much about it at all, but it looks, and sounds okay some of the SMS Games beat even the NES Games such as "Double Dragon" which stayed as 2-Players...did "Altered Beast" also come out for the Sega Master System?

  • @TruDru1978 yep

  • Epic title screen is epic

  • the music in this game is better than any other version in my opinion

  • For an 8 bit game this is very good.Im suprised how detailed the graphics are.

  • so nostalgic . i used to play this game all the time in the early 90's when i was in kindergarden.

  • SMS had the best graphics out of the 8-bit consoles.

  • actually that was turbografx

  • @nooblet911 The only thing 8-bit about the console was the CPU. The GPU was 16-Bit. I'm talking consoles that had 8-bit color graphics. The TurboGrafx-16 is out of the question.

  • thats 16 bit, the first 16 bit actually

  • @espeed623 dont forget about the in game music...tracks are sweet

  • @bishdnjuan Oh yes. :D

  • @espeed623 not that strange when it was realesed more then 2 years after the nes.. I would also say that Game Gear was a bit better

  • @espeed623 not to nit-pick, but the turbo grafx was an 8-bit system and had significantly better graphics. the SMS was certainly the best of the 3rd generation of consoles, however.

  • @openhead

The TurboGrafx is 16-bit though it uses 8-bit CPU but it uses dual 16-bit GPU.

It's th first 16-bit console, it makes it slightly less capable than Genesis/MegaDrive and SNES.

I hope you don't claim Atari Jaguar is 16-bit.

  • that was so great!I spent hours and hours on this game!

  • amazing how the memories come back

  • This is pretty impressive for the SMS!

  • why is there a picture with a barbarian pointing a gun with an axe strapped to his back on the title screen in this medieval fantasy setting?

  • @illuminatioracle because the barbarisan is not pointing a gun anywhere. its a bare hand.

  • he's offering you a french fry numbnut ...you will receive it with gracious thankfulness for it is best to keep thy strength up for the arduous journey that lay ahead. Thou neededst also to submerge the fried potato shard in fresh pixie dung for to hence receive all it's nutritional benefits... ...so get with the program

  • I have both sms and genesis versions. I dunno which one to keep. Its like me owning Playstation, Saturn and MD versions of Road Rash. lol. Its annoying, I only need one but I want to keep the best. I would say its best on its original system? Which version of Golden Axe came out first? I thought its primary system was Genesis and they made it for SMS also for people who still had that console?....

  • The primary version is a custom-made arcade machine. All home console versions are ports/remakes. However, the Genesis version comes closer to the arcade, since the hardware they put into it was similar to what SEGA used in their arcade machines.

  • Oh this is a mediocre port. Master System is capable of even way, way more.

  • This guy ain't kidding, ever play phantasy star?

  • I've unfortunately never played Phantasy Star because I have never much cared for RPGs. You are probably right about the graphics though.

  • Phantasy Star basically invented the concept of the contemporary J-RPG. Thank you Sega for yet another beautiful innovation.

  • Wow. I didn't realize the Master System was capable of such vibrant graphics. Maybe I'll actually start playing mine.

  • Master higher than NES

  • I knew it had better graphics than the NES, but I didn't realize the extent of it.

  • @tombert256

Pfft, you think THIS is amazing?

Go play Phantasy Star and THEN talk to me about impressive!

  • @ritmouse8

    AGREED!

  • @ritmouse8 ITS ALL about the PS2, nevermind the retarded dungeons, just PS2

  • thiz game is amazing

  • Sure is.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaa i remember playin this game when i was little xD

  • amazing sound and graphics

  • no "battle field" music theme? that's a shame...

  • Wow, the quality is quite good. It is very simmilar to the Genesis version

  • yep, as you would expect with first party games. SEGA was really good with porting Sega Genesis games to the Master system.

  • Lol man this brings back memories. I use to have a Sega master system as a kid and I thought it was awsome. Man times have changed ^-^.

  • this game was the ish! only game that could come close was double dragon!

  • best game music on SMS, makes me want to go on a quest!

  • lol

  • this game is actually pretty good for the master system

  • There is a genisis/megadrive version.

  • I know, I have them all, arcade version is the best but I think the megadrive music of level 1 should have been in the arcade, its much better!

  • The best thing about this game, was that on completion, you were greeted with an image of Conan from the movie starring Arnie. Cant believe they got away with that one!

  • amazing, its also incredible that they got away with using audio samples from rambo on the arcade version,

  • i remember that especially the "oh, gawd" (from the scene where Rambo stabs Deputy Mitch in the leg)

  • Hey, who gave me a 'Thumbs-Down'...?!

    It was just an assumption...

I didn't say i was positively sure of it...

  • sega master system wasn't bad at all. Entertaining. I bought the damn thing for 50 bucks, not bad at all.

  • I remember been so eager to buy this game, but when i finnaly did, it didn't last a couple of hours to finish. Genesis version had a lot more replay value, due to co-op and duel mode, though.

  • Jesus!! Just watching this brought back memories and made feel OLD. Excellent simple synth music (wasn't everything just simple then?). I felt as though I was playing myself. Cheers for that.

  • I was just about to say the same man, haha!

The music sweet alright, but ill say one thing,

the commodore 64 was my first computer, the sms was my 2nd, and all my fond memories of chiptune are dominated by the c64, i cant even remember the sms tracks!

  • werent you able to play with 2 players

i never was ever to get the golden axe

  • Only the Megadrive/Genesis version allowed you to co-op with a friend...

The Master System propably wasn't capable enough for this feature...

  • we will always have the doubt for if that was cutted out for the capabilities of the machine, the space on the cartridge, or just for not offering the same that was on 16bits (marketing).

  • Thx for the walkthrough it brings back good and Bad memories back [after completing this Game my SMS broke :( but i bought another one later] This was probably one of the best SMS Games.

  • My original SMS bit the dust too, thankfully eBay is around.

  • Oh that is sad to hear and yeah ebay is mostly a very good place to buy these kind of stuff.
