OMG! even in vanilla, if you go to training and search for ranked matches while you're playing, you almost always get a match. i never had a problem in vanilla or this one. *GO TO TRAINING and search matches there!
im quite new to fighting games totally, umvc3 attracted me because i heard it wasn't like impossibe to pick up even if you haven't played any previous games games, i've got SO much better since i first got it but online , you're so right! getting deranked from getting put with 2nd lords when im still learning puts me off soooo bad :( i think the games REALLY need tutorials about the mechanics because unless you research it , you have no chance at alllll :( only put with high rank as last resort.
Also in Blazblue CS the game has a leveling system and you get points based on how you played like finishing a round with a super, stuff like that . And the level of player you played has an effect on it too. You also get some points for losing (not much). I like it so if you're interested in the online system that it uses check it out. I totally agreed with the "Don't de-rank someone" thing.
I'm around 7th or 6th lord in terms of skill (i dont play ranked at all but I'm evenly matched with most people at 6 and 7 lrd.) Personally I dont want to play that many people who are 3rd lord. Everyone once in a while a 1st lord will show up in a room and rape everyone to death its just not fun getting perfected. So i think its a good thing they segregate higher level guys because I dont see how its fun for a highly skilled player to stomp someone with much less skill
Also, rewards should come in the form of skins, cosmetics, artwork, comics, whatever. Earn points for playing over time, get cool titles. Just little incentives. Seems easier to stay offline and get most of this stuff. Just make the rate of getting these things faster online.. I would play more
As someone completely new to marvel-- online is the most demotivating thing in the world. I feel like I have to spend endless hours learning confusing combos before even bothering. I play it offline for now, I didn't have this issue with street fighter.. It's fun but so punishing for me
In sumo, they give out gold stars to lesser-ranked rikishi who managed to best a yokozuna. They should start giving out something like that to lesser-ranked players who beat a highest-ranked ranked player, I believe.
You know what....dude youre a true winner and gamer....you realize how other people feel and dont degrade them...youre a motivator and thats what a good gamer is.

how come when I'm just a beginner but i always fight 9th lord people. they're litterally 30sec games and it becomes no fun in an instant. They really need to fix that
@tuck752ownzu A lot of things are impossible with a controller. That's why most of the fighting community will write you off as a joke if you're not using one unless you're an already established player.
Well, I personally don't believe that the de-rank is something that is bad. Demotivational? Maybe. But, in all honesty it shows you whom truly owned their rank and worked for it to get that high.
it's so hard to get to a higher rank, cuz i'm not bad at this game, i'm not max skill level, but because it only pairs me with bad people, all i get is constant spamming, i want to face people that max play, ya know an actual challenge but someone who respects the game and plays it too it's fullest, i'm tired of people who spam deadpool's (for example) guns when i finally reach them when my characters are so low on health, they pop out dante, if anyone, if anyone wants to fight me on ps3, ask
I personally think fighting games should use a halo 3 type ranking sistem, you have a xp level and a highest skill level which requires constant winning to rank up your highest skill.
I dont mind waiting but I get demotivated by things alot. I LOVE the point system in SSF4:AE you do lose points but points only mean as much as you or other people make them out to be so it doesnt demotivate me much at all. But Win/Loss Ratios demotivate me VERY quickly, every loss feels like an irremovable stain that you must take and just hope you can compensate with a couple wins. Also displaying what number rank you are with the character is awesome but only works for 1v1 type fighting games
Well for me one thing was in tekken the way is demotivates me online is the ranking system i get used to the lag after a while but when you get matched against the a person that is 5 or 6 levels higher then you the only motivation is not to lose because you will get not experience towards leveling up and it still counts against you when you lose to get demoted and this happen to me a few times that i stopped playing for a month because of it
Well I was ranked down once it pissed me off so badly I wanted to stop playing...but it also got me looking at my team and assist composition and the way I fight. I discovered that initially that I wasn't very adaptive to other playing styles like a keep away with deadpool or doom or a magneto rush down with a lock down assist in short yes it was extremely demotivational but I guess it got me to a point where I figured something is definatly wrong here and I'm doing WAY better since then
they should put a better system to get people on your level or above, i first got the game and my first time online i got hit with a wolverine touch of death combo three times
Listen all you need too do for fighting games is category ranks Win/loss points added cool features like Best team wins. Streaks also like should have different lobby rooms thats it
max just so you know the color/number of the bars is not what tells you whether or not it's laggy. the consistency is what tells you. so if somebody's bars are unstable and going from 5 bars to 4 and back again that's a sign of lag even though he has 'green bars'
you should do a video on how to beat spammers cause lets be honest its very very annoying going into a ranked match on a fighting game and you cant even fight the person cause there running and shooting shit
I think a tournament mode like the one that was in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 would be great on this game for both on & offline. Offline could be good for a group of friends battleing it out for #1, and online could be set by ppl joining a lobby for the tournament, winning their way up with the 1st place getting a big bonus to rank and 2nd & 3rd getting bonuses as well but not as much. idk just something I was thinking would bring a lot to the game. Great vids, keep it up X D
Personally, I'm likely what you could call a scrub player and I don't have the time to train everyday but I try to improve myself. Going online just to face spammers when you want to really up your game and add mind is really and I mean REALLY frustrating...
Plus, as you said, waiting for a match just to be beat up isn't very convincing...
I think while you're in ranked matches the game should start finding and queuing up people for you to play against after you're done with the match you're currently in. And it could find people who are in matches already and just queue them up so right after your match, the stats come up, you press A, and you're already in your next match with whoever the game found. And if someone decides to leave the queue, the game just takes them out of the line and throws someone else in.
Mk9. Worst online ever. I still cant play it online or with friends because i bought the dlc costumes and now it drops me every match, they never fixed it and i havent played it since
Now I do agree with what you're saying, however the most common "de-motivator" I see while playing this game is the fact that some people over use projectiles from far off distances and flee when you move toward them. But what the points you made in your video where great. Being a huge fan of the series since 2000 on the my first video game ever, the Sega Dreamcast, it does pain me to see a large amount of flaws in the online experiances.
I think you should get normal points for winning, half points for losing and 150% points for beating someone above your skill level. I hate looking at my k/d ratio and seeing all my losses and I feel sad D:
Well, sad to say that you can de-rank in UMVC3. The other day, I fought someone Online and they were de-Ranked once I beat them. With you saying that's not motivational, I feel bad for beating that person now!
It is possible to de-rank in UMvC3, and it was possible in Vanilla as well. Happened to me in Vanilla back when there were Sentinel mouth laser spammers everywhere
i agree with the ranking system. I HATE HAVING TO WIN TO RANK UP.....cause too many people spammmmmmmmm with ghost rider...deadpool......sent....taskmasker....and cawkeye..
Super smash bros brawl is unplayable the connectios has to be flawless and that is imposible, in tatsunoko vs capcom is decent but is has lag making the game unappealin to most players. Giving points to players just for playing online is a good idea like giving half point for losing or less but at least some points would encoure players to play more online
I've ranked down before in vanilla mvc. But I find that the main issue with fighting games at the moment is people who are playing at a mid-high level of gameplay have been playing for years, but for many people to pick up and play they need something tangible to work with. A solid tutorial system, better mission modes where you can SEE the combos are all useful things. If they did this more effectively, the average skill level would increase and we'd see a better community.
I think the should put a time frame to those hardcore players so others know when that person usually plays also you should have the power to bane people if someone is abusing another player because he knows his time frame and knows that he is a easy win. Got candy today from a stranger who said don't talk to strangers
Well I'm with Max as far as it comes to the conexion issues I mean if even COD can have an absolutely lag-free server, why can't marvel have one? its not really capcom not having resources for I also play SSFIV and there's not a nanosecond of delay, that doens't mean I'm not losing online because I'm bad but I find it very dificult to time combos online (i barely can time them offline) fps can be... not difficult games but they transfer way more info than fighting games.
One thing that would be great to have, especially in team based fighters, thought it would lend itself to be better suited for games like KOF or CVS would be that players could team up and play a certain person on each team. For a game like mvc3 that would be a bit much but wouldn't it be hillarious if you were the wesker on a team and you had to press a button to bring yourself in as an assist and your buddy playing point would be pissed at you for not coming out to extend his combo LOL
One thing they should add to fighting games is some sort of team battle or objective battles that changes the way the game plays. Heroes and Heralds would be nice if you could do a lobby style online set up and also have you and up to 8 players total to create teams of 4 to fight it out.
I believe Dead or Alive 4's online matchmaking was actually done quite well, yet no other fighting game adopted its system. There was no segregation between ranked and player matches. You always got points for winning and lost points for losing, however if you were able to manage to beat someone a few ranks higher then you, you got a handicap bonus. Lobbies were also allowed to prevent certain ranks from entering, and they also put a cap on how many points you can gain off one person.
Also the lobbies had an external area where you could run an avatar around and do emotes and text chat, while in the center there was this huge tv to watch the match, and they allowed for 16 people to be in any given lobby. You could even buy different types of lobbies with the money you earned playing online.
As much as I'd like to see a "reward just for playing" system, I feel it coddles the casual players and alienates the competitive ones. If you look at starcraft, yes you can rank down, yes it feels bad, but the matchmaking then puts you up against people that are actually around your skill level. So I'm in support of the rank up/down system because frankly, if you can't block a crossup or don't know how to deal with Dark Phoenix, then you probably shouldn't be 6th lord or higher.
Yep, if you lose your progress bar will go lower making it harder to rank up. It's the same for SSF4 if you lose you lose your point and your grade level will go lower.
Coming from a terrible player who is only 9thlord, I would 100% love a system that only rewards you. I really get disappointed have like over 200 matches played and still being a 9thlord. I play Assassin Creed: Revelation, I know that is not a fighting game but the multilayer online system works on points of how well you preform in games. This means every one levels, its just the skilled players level a lot faster. I enjoy this system a lot because in UMVC3, I feel like it punishes you.
one thing i hate and cant stand about every single one of your videos that you do EVERYTIME is............................they never come out fast enough :(
Honestly I think the Best online system that ever came out was the one from DOA. Not just because it was the first fighting game to go online but because it did a lot of things right when they did it. Not many games after that could really measure up to it after that. However I do give Kudos to these games (Vanilla and Present) for have the connection simulator where you can play in lag situations which I think every fighting game needs from now on.
Can anyone tell me how does Dante teleport after a stinger wall bounce??? if it is DOWN,DOWN,S , i find it extremely hard to do. is there an easier way for that?
i dont care about online features geting better i just want a good ass netcode as long there is no lag im cool games lik mvc2 and sf3 flawless online i play that shit all day cus of 1 fact theres no lag
Not gonna lie, when my parents or gf call? I literally just hold down and block until I can set the phone comfortably on my shoulder. Problem is, when my parents hear the 'click clack' of arcade stick buttons? They get maaad, "GET BACK TO STUDYING!"
Hey miles. First things first, I love the work that you do for your channel. Being the 1% of fighting game fans, I strictly played Guilty Gear. Being that, I play SSF4AE now and I can say in a city where main stream is the only stream, its awesome to be able to play with others. Online isn't great but its all that I have. That said, the only fixes I can see is making it possible to play crossplatform and be able to search matchmaking either by skill/rank or just by fastest possble.
I think the matchmaking in the game is horrible. When I was first starting out I kept running into 8th/9th Lords when I was a Beginner-Fighter. Now I made it to 8th Scout and it is a pain going up against 6th Lords. The de-ranking is very demotivational, currently I'm 144-144 and don't feel like playing anymore ranked games for a while. That definitely needs to be fixed. The lobbies need more upgrading like the "Beginner's Unite or Character Restricted" should really be taken into effect.
The match making system should only match you up against a similar skill player, but that rank should be in the "background", or at least invisible to players other than yourself. Your visible rank should only go up, but only if you win.
I've de-ranked in MvC3, and it really put me off playing online against randoms.
Was just playing some lobby matches and noticed a couple things that would deter some from continuing to play the game. Firstly, online attitude: in other words things like tea bagging a person after a win only adds to the losers frustration. Secondly, win quotes: some characters win quotes seem pretty demotivating to me, for instance Taskmaster, Deadpool and Akuma (kinda) with some of his quotes like "Unskilled!". Those are just some of my observations from watching people play.
@aothrun I concur, but that's really part of the game design, the winning taunts are supposed to make your feel bad, and by extension, motivated to play the game. The main issue it the attitudes of the lobbies. Every so and so I encounter a good lobby, but there are people both in and out of lobbies with serious attitude issues.
@aothrun While I agree with this I also believe that due to the content of the game... (basically Heroes vs Villians [Or heralds]) it wouldnt make too much sense to have them be all happy like either...or Akuma calling someone a worthy opponent or somethin like that .. x: just throwin that out there
I would like to hear your thoughts on story in fighting games. Other fighting game franchises like KOF, Blazblue, and even Mortal Kombat have a story mode in their games but I can't think of one Capcom fighting game that has a story mode in it. True story mode doesn't do anything for the actual gameplay but to me it makes the fighting game more interesting in itself even with just the special intros between certain characters and the win quotes. Should fighting games even bother with it?
@j00rmotherlol I think that the reason why fighting games would benefit from a good story mode is for new players. It would be a great way too introduce them to mechanics instead of training mode which is only useful once you have an idea of what you're doing. After that they need a strong online. One mode for people who really want to find challenging opponents, one for beginners and one general mode for people who just want to play.
Maybe something about the elitist assholes online and there stuck up atitudes, one thing thats makes me just flat out quit playing are them, spammers also drive me nuts.
I was demoted before in Vanilla, and I'm sure UMvC3 still has it. The game itself is fun, but it's frustrating with the current system can act like a one step forward-two step back streak. Change it so everyone has a chance. Also, tweak how quitting gets penalized somehow. Also, nobody likes quitters, but it can happen for stuff like power-outs. It's not fair to either person when a quit like that costs both people something: the one who stayed doesn't win and the "quitter" gets punished.
i have been demoted once, form 8th to 9th, after that i was mad but had more of a desire to get back to 8th and get further, but i have a goal to get at least to 6th lord, but i think what people need when there online, get to a specific rank, or wins or win streak, to get the confidence to keep playing, also i say they should have a point system to get people to a rank, but win/loss ratio to say there a 9th scout, or 8th judge, stuff like that
I dont know if this is possible but instead of just being able to spectate you can actually go to training mode until your up you can practice for the next match but the question is how would it effect connectivity.
The most fun I've ever had with an Online game mode was Vanilla SFIV's Championship Mode. It gave you a goal rather than just being an endless point based see-saw. There needs to be actual ping ratings and you shouldn't get negatives for losing. In a regular school test, if you have 100 questions and get 20 wrong you just don't get the points you could have from that 20, making ur overall score 80%. In FGs, getting that 20 wrong would leave you at 60%. It's dumb.
I actually put a lot of thought into the issue of weather or not people should lose points and possibly get deranked online, and in the end I think there does need to be a penalization for losing. Imagine if a win got you points and a loss just got you less points. Without any penalty for losing, what's your motivation for trying to improve? If, however, you KNOW you are gonna lose points for losing, you're gonna make DAMN sure you give it your all in every match.
@SupaDupaFli79 the point of a game is to rank up to show the progress you've made, although decreasing points is a good way to show whom is good or not, i don't think its a good fit for this game because of the lag and many variables that haunt this game.
@SupaDupaFli79 yeah but its pretty pissy when you lose cuz some guy is zoning like a mofo and you can't get in cuz lag is killing any chance of you doing any combos, it's happend to me a lot and I think it's retarded. I just think it should be you get points for winning but no points for losing
its a shame that max's keep away projectile spam tools with dantes rocket launcher and dooms hidden missle really puts his normal fighting skills with strider to shame
With people losing points online I do agree it is a little harsh for people who are new to it but I've also seen something like that in some racing games mainly in Mario kart wii and 7
Staredown was epic! I agree with the other guy who asked you to make an episode about training modes. Besides better online, training mode is where fighting games need the most improvement, I think.
Hey max how about some ideas for rookies like myself on who to use as characters? perhaps some sort of list type thing of characters based on difficulty to play (or perform combos basically).
Gamespot recently did an article on how lackluster training mode is in fighting games it would be nice to get your opinion on this in the next episode
i just came to think that rank doesn't matter. i just never understimate or overestimate a player cause of it, as a freaking beginner, i've beaten 5th lords on a lobby, and i lost many times to other beginners and amateurs...
Still i agree...de-ranking is quite demotivational, no wonder some people rage-quit.
Ive been de ranked once and it was very depressing and made me so angry. and it's not my fault because people play cheap just to win! And when u de rank it takes forever to get back up...its retarded. It makes me not want to play ranked matches so I don't risk going any lower
u can go down a rank?!? -____- r u serious capcom? like it rlly sucks for people like me who may have bad win/lose ratios but have fun playing so now im positive im going to stay as an amateur
yes yes yes yes yes. Screw the win/lose. It really annoys me. Like I'll admit, I see people that have like 100 wins and 200 loses... I end up thinking that they are just bad, but maybe they had bad games, or were learning or whatever. It SHOULD be a point system
Earlier today when facing someone instead of saying rank up battle it said rank down battle for me.... Yea its possible to rank down. I nearly lost that match too because I decided not to play my best team...
Oh and one more thing, the connection thing, it depends on that little badge too, near the player name, a 3 bar but star badge(wich means good connectiion) is actually better than a 5 bar with the other badges.. those badges mean smtg, cant remember well, but it has to do with the connections too
Actually Max, i de ranked once and it motivated me even more.. because i knew i was better then that.. and start playing much more, and eventually i ranked up again. So de ranking sometimes, or at least to some people , liek myself it might motivate =) at least my opinion.
This has been flagged as spam show
OMG! even in vanilla, if you go to training and search for ranked matches while you're playing, you almost always get a match. i never had a problem in vanilla or this one. *GO TO TRAINING and search matches there!

BAKIZBAK 1 month ago
I think while you're in ranked matches the game should start finding and queuing up people for you to play against after you're done with the match you're currently in. And it could find people who are in matches already and just queue them up so right after your match, the stats come up, you press A, and you're already in your next match with whoever the game found. And if someone decides to leave the queue, the game just takes them out of the line and throws someone else in.

For a game like mvc3 that would be a bit much but wouldn't it be hillarious if you were the wesker on a team and you had to press a button to bring yourself in as an assist and your buddy playing point would be pissed at you for not coming out to extend his combo LOL
xdream000 1 month ago
One thing they should add to fighting games is some sort of team battle or objective battles that changes the way the game plays. Heroes and Heralds would be nice if you could do a lobby style online set up and also have you and up to 8 players total to create teams of 4 to fight it out.
xdream000 1 month ago
I believe Dead or Alive 4's online matchmaking was actually done quite well, yet no other fighting game adopted its system. There was no segregation between ranked and player matches. You always got points for winning and lost points for losing, however if you were able to manage to beat someone a few ranks higher then you, you got a handicap bonus. Lobbies were also allowed to prevent certain ranks from entering, and they also put a cap on how many points you can gain off one person.
xdream000 1 month ago
Also the lobbies had an external area where you could run an avatar around and do emotes and text chat, while in the center there was this huge tv to watch the match, and they allowed for 16 people to be in any given lobby. You could even buy different types of lobbies with the money you earned playing online.
xdream000 1 month ago
@xdream000 I really miss that online, hah.

As much as I'd like to see a "reward just for playing" system, I feel it coddles the casual players and alienates the competitive ones. If you look at starcraft, yes you can rank down, yes it feels bad, but the matchmaking then puts you up against people that are actually around your skill level. So I'm in support of the rank up/down system because frankly, if you can't block a crossup or don't know how to deal with Dark Phoenix, then you probably shouldn't be 6th lord or higher.
taidai1338 1 month ago
@Miles923 Only rank up sounds like feelgood bullcrap to me. I would prefer an understandable point system.
The online system has two major flaws.
1) Player base is split between PS3 and 360.
2) Bad players set their matchup to 'Same' so that they don't get bodied. That's why setting your matchup to 'Any' doesn't do any good.
The lag indicator is probably accurate at the start of the match. It is likely that it varies during the match. Maybe they could leave it on screen.

its nice to see a cool dude just keeping up with his fan base, its really respectable.
as i move up in ranks and get paired with less and less people, i end up getting demotivated to playing online.
it constantly fails to find people and i keep getting paired with 'lag-fags', people either taking advantage of the lag or creating it themselves.
the worst i see are the ones that see they're about to lose and intentionally lag out.
we need a better report system.

Hey miles. First things first, I love the work that you do for your channel. Being the 1% of fighting game fans, I strictly played Guilty Gear. Being that, I play SSF4AE now and I can say in a city where main stream is the only stream, its awesome to be able to play with others. Online isn't great but its all that I have. That said, the only fixes I can see is making it possible to play crossplatform and be able to search matchmaking either by skill/rank or just by fastest possble.
samifish182 1 month ago

Those are just some of my observations from watching people play.
aothrun 1 month ago
@aothrun I concur, but that's really part of the game design, the winning taunts are supposed to make your feel bad, and by extension, motivated to play the game. The main issue it the attitudes of the lobbies. Every so and so I encounter a good lobby, but there are people both in and out of lobbies with serious attitude issues.
ExaExcellion 1 month ago
@aothrun While I agree with this I also believe that due to the content of the game... (basically Heroes vs Villians [Or heralds]) it wouldnt make too much sense to have them be all happy like either...or Akuma calling someone a worthy opponent or somethin like that .. x: just throwin that out there

There are many things that would keep people coming back to it.
Better online connection: Horrific lag kills fighting games. Dedicated servers?
Updates: People get pissed off is how "broken" they think characters are.
A reward system: Getting new Titles is boring. Unlock new skins, stages, or characters.
Events: Hold weekly tournaments via online.
More modes: Story, Survival, Time Attack, Training Online, REPLAY MODE!
Tips: Have info that teach you how to fight characters.

Should fighting games even bother with it?
j00rmotherlol 1 month ago 17
@j00rmotherlol The Street Fighter games have pretty detailed stories injected in them if you do a little digging.
DoctorChuck 1 month ago
@j00rmotherlol I think that the reason why fighting games would benefit from a good story mode is for new players. It would be a great way too introduce them to mechanics instead of training mode which is only useful once you have an idea of what you're doing. After that they need a strong online. One mode for people who really want to find challenging opponents, one for beginners and one general mode for people who just want to play.

DarkWorldDragon24 1 month ago
i have been demoted once, form 8th to 9th, after that i was mad but had more of a desire to get back to 8th and get further, but i have a goal to get at least to 6th lord, but i think what people need when there online, get to a specific rank, or wins or win streak, to get the confidence to keep playing, also i say they should have a point system to get people to a rank, but win/loss ratio to say there a 9th scout, or 8th judge, stuff like that

xDevilsSwordsmenx 1 month ago
The most fun I've ever had with an Online game mode was Vanilla SFIV's Championship Mode. It gave you a goal rather than just being an endless point based see-saw. There needs to be actual ping ratings and you shouldn't get negatives for losing. In a regular school test, if you have 100 questions and get 20 wrong you just don't get the points you could have from that 20, making ur overall score 80%. In FGs, getting that 20 wrong would leave you at 60%. It's dumb.
But really, Championship Mode.
DarkDreamT2 1 month ago

Fishfan10 1 month ago
@SupaDupaFli79 yeah but its pretty pissy when you lose cuz some guy is zoning like a mofo and you can't get in cuz lag is killing any chance of you doing any combos, it's happend to me a lot and I think it's retarded. I just think it should be you get points for winning but no points for losing

My issue with UMvC3 online is getting matched with 6 players in-a-row who have the "Forged From Steel" achievement for 300+ online matches.
