  • Yeah, I agree. That poem was so beautiful that everytime I hear her read it my eyes well up in tears.

  • It seems like Darlene didn't want to read the poem cause poems are girly and she's a total tomboy and it just isn't her

  • For those of us who grew up watching this show, Darlene was an icon; she was probably the first truly realistic child/teenager ever portrayed on television. I can't think of another child on a sitcom that ever reached the level of depth or nuance that Darlene achieved.

Bravo to Sara Gilbert and Roseanne!!!

  • I'm really impressed by Roseanne's natural acting abilities. Of all the stand-up comics turned actors, she's one of if not the best. She can do both comedy and drama very well.

  • Best rendition of Cannon in D without a doubt!

  • that kid was so dorky that was funny when roseanne said you got a gun on you? I cant say that I blame darlene for not wanting to read her poem but I'm glad she did it anyways. it took alot guts to go up there and say all of that personal stuff. I like to write myself.

  • I think Roseanne did the right thing for encouraging Darlene to read her poem and shame on Dan for not supporting either of them in that. He basically made it seem like he didn't believe Darlene could do a good job. I think if something would have happened to Rosie and Dan had to raise the kids on his own they would have ended up terribly. Like when DJ didn't want to kiss that girl b/c she was black.. I absolutely hated how Dan handled that. Disgusting.

  • Becky ended up being the biggest nobody out of all the kids. She always thought she was better than Darlene and DJ and she ended up nowhere. DJ grew up to be really smart and got really into filmmaking and stuff and Darlene was just super smart and was getting amazing job offers at a young age. Becky ended up working at the trailer park equivalent of Hooters living in a trailer with her dingbat husband. Funny how things work out.

  • @mamitachocolate Becky was actually very smart and would have went to college if Dan's business hadn't gone sour. She actually ended up like Roseanne. She went off with her boyfriend and gave up her life to be a 'house wife' so to speak.

  • "Away away why do you stay, fly away bird, it looks at me, and still it hops and hops and hops fly away it spreads its wings and flys away away it does not look back." "You got a gun on you." hahahahahaha!

  • I love this poem and relate. Im so glad roseanne made her daughter do this...it showed Darlene her talent and helped her to use it and made everyone cry! :D

  • Darlene is my favorite character! She came such a long way and it's so funny seeing her character go from this wild child tomboy, to introverted slacker, to a teenager in love, and eventually to one of the only members of the family to have her life together.

  • damn that poem was deep.... :'(

  • 5:32 & 8:10 -- They're playing Pachelbel's "Canon in D".

  • this is me

    i am darliene

  • I think this is the ep where Darelen discovers her hidden artistic talent and she shows her vulnerable side.

  • i actually like this poem...anyone can identify with it

  • When I'm older I want to be close to my sisters kids like Jackie is with Roseanne's.

I'm not close to my Aunts at all...

  • Oh! Joss Whedon edited this episode.

Maybe that's why I love it so much.

  • @LalalandLadyDuck This is one of the episodes that he wrote, and it definitely shows!

  • Damn it. Another episode that makes me cry.

  • I don't think she means anything by it, she never did that any other time. It is just she was so proud of Darlene, and wanted Darlene to be proud of her accomplishment herself.

  • why is roseanne so intent on making darlene read her poem??

its NOT roseanns poem this isnt high school round 2 for her I dont get wy shes pushing her so much.

  • @RENTluver06 Because thats what parents are suppose to do!! Is this really a question? Parents are suppose to support and ENCOURAGE you. Parents are suppose to push kids to do things they don't want to because they think it might benefit them. I bet Darlene didn't feel as bad reading the poem after the applause she got and it probably made her realize she is a good writer. Do you believe Roseanne and Dan shouldn't push Darlene to go to school either just because she doesn't want to?

  • OMG her poem was the BEST! i loved it

  • Omg darlene's poem was amazing I started crying it's so sweet! :)

  • Roseanne looks so fucking adorable when she pulls out that "stiff used kleenex" then secretly hides them under her purse.

  • lol i was laughing when roseanne cries reminds me of my aunt

  • I won't lie, that is one of the best poems I have heard.

  • @prophetslayerwars I think that's Chrystal's son.

  • I love the line "To whom it concerns I just turned 13, too short to be quarterback, to plain to be queen."

  • DJ won a spelling bee; Darlene wrote a poem. What did Becky do? That's right, she dropped, got married and ended up in a trailer.

  • @ifuseekamy Funny how she always thought she was better than everyone, huh? Lol.

  • @ifuseekamy She got straight As all throughout high school.

  • Ironic that Darlene ends up becoming a writer.

  • @XxVailetxX comicbook artist

  • @HUSKY57887 David was the artist, Darlene wrote the stories.

  • @HUSKY57887 At the end of the show, I think she was a copywriter for an advertisting company. I know she turned down a job like that before, but I'm pretty sure that's what she ended up doing anyway.

  • @XxVailetxX Foreshadowing

  • GREAT show, but they totally ruined Canon in D at the end. XD

  • That was a beautiful poem. Sara Gilbert really nailed that scene, she had the perfect mix of anxiety, sadness and attempted apathy. Really beautiful!

  • i cried a little at her poem

  • @gracehumous I got a bit teary eyed mysef.

  • I like Darlene's hair in this episode.. really cute :D

  • What's up with that kid in the freeze frame at the end? Did he just suddenly realize the camera was on him or something?

  • @coasterpiglet He broke the fourth wall and looked at the camera by accident. You're not supposed to do that in acting. Never look directly at the camera. It's not supposed to be there in your mind. lol

  • 5:43-6:06 behind Jackie to the right... I have seen this episode so many times but I never noticed the guy sleeping!

  • @kaelyn4ever I know, I just now noticed him. Now everytime I watch this I'll be looking at him thinking, "Wake up jakcass it's the big emotional scene!"

  • that was a pretty good lil poem!! :)

  • Got a gun on ya?

  • Away.

    Away.

    lol

  • that is an amazing poem.

  • Canon playing at the end reminded me of my 4th grade orchestra class -- a collection of noises that resembled music. It was especially adorable because we could finally string together notes and we thought we were brilliant.

  • I love how theres a guy sleepin in the background from 5:00 - 5:06!

    lmao!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOL

  • and 5:26-6:08

  • i always tear up when she reads her poem :(

  • Amazing poem.

  • someone shoot that guy at 5:20

  • AWAY!!

    XD

  • That was a cool poem.

  • i kinda liked darlenes poem

  • i no it was pretty

  • LOL, 5:24."THAT'S IT"

  • haha. the pachelbel's canon in D at the end is so awful. lol.

  • and they aren't really playing it hahaha

  • Jackie is clapping so hard, OMG

  • Are you serious, there are like five people in the audience! Once I had to read my winning poem from my class about the transformation from elem. school to middle school and there was literally over 200 people there. It was so scary, and the lights were SO BRIGHT!

  • away away why do you stay???

  • i want to know who really wrote darlenes poem. it was very good.

  • Just because she didn't follow the assignment to the T doesn't make it not good. It's an excellent poem, and obviously her teacher didn't care that it doesn't give a "happy feeling."

  • oh, pick your nose

  • lol dog ur seriously a bich

  • I kinda see what you're saying, but it goes with Darlene's personality. The beginning's funny, it's just a slice of life, and later in the poem it evokes strong feeling that overall do depict strong feelings that do run along the lines of happiness or elation for her. But you are right, in real life a lot of teachers probably would've lowered her grade, but I'd like to think a real, thinking teacher who understands wouldn't.

  • kind of sad that you would think that the general teachers out there don't think, isn't it? few good teachers exist, i suppose the bad ones are there to make them look better.

  • flay away bird!!

    LOOOL

  • OMG! i watched this part like 20 times, and i just noticed at (7:53) there is a guy sleeping in the backround..LOL!

  • "You got a gun on ya?

    LOL

  • this was always one of my favorite roseanne episodes. I think the 2nd season is the best roseanne season.

  • It was number one in the neilsen ratings.

  • Season 2 is my favorite season of Roseanne too.

  • Jackie sounded eerily like the mother when she made fun of Roseanne, haha

  • thats what i was just about to say!

  • haha I love this show!

  • i love rosie's sad face. god, great poem. i'd love to have family that openly emotional.

  • AWAY! AWAY!

    And still it hops.

    And hops.

    And hops.

  • It was a ((really)) good poem and this is a great episode. Thanks for posting

  • Sara Gilbert was such a good actress.

  • She is! Too bad she is underreated

  • This was Sara Gilbert's best performance to date. She had a great performance earlier in the season too in Inherit the Wind, the episode where, as Roseanne says, Becky "boombies" in front of the entire student council.

  • @redsoxfan1 is a good actress

  • @setboy1 Who died and made you the all-seeing grammer god? Besides, YOU don't use capitals when nessesary!

  • @rani1223 take a chill pill kid.

  • @setboy1 "Chill pill"? Come into the 90's!

  • @rani1223 just watch the show and stop getting worked up over nothing

  • @setboy1 Sorry gosh!

  • her prom was so toaching i almost cried! ALMOST!

  • me too i had like tears in my eyes.

  • did you see jackie when darlene was reading her poem?! LMAO!!

  • i dont think thats funny, and i personally think that is emotional

  • her face, she gets all sad and breaks down, you dont see the humor in that?

  • i totally see the humor in it. cause the way they build it up about having stale tissues and embarrassing parents and boom. and her face was so funny

  • Lol!

You got a gun on you?

  • lol
