  • A few years back I had the pleasure of riding on one of Dollywood's converted IH shuttle buses. I was waiting in line for a ride and couldn't hardly believe it when I saw one in the line up. I waited a few minutes just to ride on that one. Someone has since posted a video of one of these on youtube.

  • The 345 always had a distinct sound, which you could especially hear when it was either revving up, or at sustained high speed. Do any of you experts know why that is? Timing? cam? I don't know. All I know about the 345 is that it had timing gears (no chain) and was extremely heavy.

  • @TheSpazModic alot of the roar on those 345's is due to the cooling fan.....Fan clutches and electric fans were not very common back then....so the cooling fan spun at a 1:1 ratio in relation to engine speed.

  • @dwi189 I hear what you are saying, but the engine itself has a unique sound, and I've heard it on old IH's that I've been in/ around in the past, and you can hear it on other trucks on youtube. See westpointpete's loadstar, I think his is a 304, but it sounds similar. Also, wick ranch's grain truck. Try as I might, I can't describe the sound.

  • @TheSpazModic Oh yes, The Wich Ranch Loadstar.....I found his channel a few years ago by doing a search for International Loadstar on YouTube.....I rode alot of school busses while growing up in the 1970's...Most of the buses I rode were 60's-70's era GMC's with the V6 and 5 speed standard or 4 speed Allison Automatic....I also rode on plenty of Loadstars......older butterfly hood modls and newer fiberglass tilt front end......345's and Allision Automatics or 5 speed manuals....

  • Brings back memories! I rode an International Loadstar 1700 in high school, except it was a manual transmission model. I've loved the sound of Internationals ever since.

  • Any idea what the redline was on those gas engines?

  • @rgiaco777 According to IH the max RPM on a 345 would be 3,800, but I've seen them hit at least 5,000.

  • Now that's what I'm talkin' '.bout

  • i think those harder transmission shifts, if i'm not mistaken, is actually better for the vehicle...the soft shifts of all cars nowadays seems to give away the durability of the auto transmissions like on these buses

  • International 392 was a popular, they were usually special order, I love the sound, very distinctive.

  • I sure miss the old Loadstars!

  • The bus at :55 looks is the exact duplicate of the first bus I rode on, Good old North Pocono #17 circa 1971

  • I remember my kindergarten bus was an old international in 1987, bus was prob a 70s model.. I remember how hard it shifted and that whine on acceleration.. Cool vid!!

  • 20 secs poor carpenter and great sound by the way

  • Wow! It's incredible how a sound can bring back so many memories! I haven't heard that engine sound since I was a kid! Our school district had a whole fleet of Loadstars with Superior bodies. Thanks for the time travel! :)

  • I like how the transmission whines. It brings back memories.

  • What size Gas Engine do the early 80's international S1700 Series have?

  • The most common was the 345 V8, which is featured in this video, there was also the 404 V8 and I may be missing some.

  • @4751424 BEST VID EVAR

  • Did they put the 549CI v8 gasser in any of these buses?Does anybody know?

  • I don't believe they did, I think they only used the 550CI diesel version.

  • @616ist 404 was the biggest gas engine in IH buses. 392s were also used.

  • I love the bus at 1:31!

  • The Bluebird International bus I rode in school sounded just like that. 1975 Conventional, Palm Beach County #133

  • This bring back memories. My boyhood church had a 66 passenger 1963 International Wayne with the rounded rear, two 60 passenger 1967 International Waynes (one with a 345 and one with a 304, and a 60 passenger 1967 International Thomas with a six cylinder. My young adulthood church in FL had 3 72 passenger 1973 International Carpenters.

  • Our church bus was an early 1960's Ford Superior named "Ezekiel's Wheels."

  • My boyhood church also had two 1961 GMC Superiors and later, but briefly, had a 1964 GMC Superior with the modern bodystyle and wrap around windows. It also had a 54 passenger 1963 Ford Blue Bird and a 60 passenger 1964 Ford Carpenter. The church purchased the Internationals later to replace those buses.

  • My Dad had a 1979 Scout with a 304.Good engines.

  • seeing all these pics of these old ihc loadstar buses brings back memories of the early 80's when I was 5 and 6 and the sound of the old 345 v8 those motors were strong.

  • IHC 345's kick ass

  • That sounds like an International Loadstar bus equipped with a 345 cubic inch V8 coupled to an Allison automatic with air brakes. Is there any way the poster can post another audio clip, this time of an International Loadstar 345, with a MANUAL transmission? Thanks.

  • Hi, I have an IHC Loadstar 1700 Wayne bus with manual transmission & 345 gasoline engine...I need to rebuild the carburetor to get it running but will make a video of it.

  • I remember that very distinct sound from the gas engine when taching up, but when I was in school as a passenger, they were not automatic, they were manual stick shift....Are these motors still MFG?

  • Sadly, no they are not. International decided to go with all diesel.

  • Boy, that sure does bring back memories. I rode an '82 International gas school bus in high school. Sounded exactly the same. It's weird how just the audio alone makes you remember stuff. I think I have listened to it 50 times today. Thank You! Can I make the sound of the 345 accelerating my next ring tone? Good times. Good tims.

  • Thanks. It's not my own audio, it is from School Bus Enthusiast, you can get the audio there.

  • Like thses old IH school buses.Just the sound bring backl memories.

  • Yeah, I'm a big fan of IH, especially the 345 in this video.

  • That's awesome! I need to get some Holley carburetor rebuild kits so I can experience this again from my own International loadstars. Sounds like an Allison automatic transmission.

  • Thanks, Chad. I was wondering about your buses. They look to still be in very decent shape. Good luck!

  • @retrochad

the 404 replaced the 392 i'd say the 392 ran better then the 404s

  • These 70's International school buses are my favorite. I like the sound clip of them being driven. That transmission whin is music to my ears. :)

  • They're my favorite too, especially the newer Loadstar chassis.

  • we had some early S series models that had gas engines back in the day. Not sure what engine, I know either 345s or 392s.

  • 392's? They're getting pretty rare now.
