  • One of the greatest, most tasteful drummers, to ever play.

  • yeah man he is the man. what an awesome drummer

  • Tony Williams...discussion over.

  • He doesn't need to go and lay out 3K on a pretty little vintage Gretsch bebop kit in the hope of sounding authentic, he IS the sound. What's this kit, a generic Yamaha or something? Sounds amazing.

  • I feel relieved that these guys are born and play this music. The world keeps evolving with them.

  • I saw him in concert with Herbie Hancock in 1987.

He was so brilliant,so power and so smooth...

During the drum solo he was keeping an Swing figure using the foot Hi-hat like ostinato and improvising nice and complex melodies with toms,cymbals,snare,kick...The Master Masters,no doubt about that.

    I love his playing.

    Thanks Mr. Al Foster

  • Absolutely incredible solo. I can only dream to get that particular sound at one point.

  • DIVIVE

  • After hearing this, who says you can't play melodies on a drumset?!

  • all though i like the Jack De Jonette on the kit at this song ,super Al kicks ..sss

    This pretty much defines Jazz.

  • You ought to see him live with his quartet. He is awesome. He is also a very nice guy!

  • I saw Foster with Randy Brecker a bunch of years back....pretty interesting pairing...couldn't keep my eyes and ears of Foster, but Brecker tried to steal the show as usual. fucking walrus.....

  • no comment .grande Al Foster

Al Foster, my favourite modern jazz drummer, in this footage shows a bit of his technique and musical taste.

  • State of the Tenor is live at the Village Vanguard and has playing very similar to this video. It's the same group as this except Ron Carter plays Bass instead of Dave Holland

  • Wonderful solo!!

If you like them, get these 2 records:

Joe Henderson - The State of the Tenor Live at the Village Vanguard Vol 1 & Vol 2

  • This was Miles Davis' favorite drummer.

  • Al Foster, the MASTER of jazz.

One of the best drummer ever

    Amazing technique and swing

  • so musical and swingin'

  • An absolutely masterful display of Modern Jazz Drumming.

  • Al Foster is very underated and swinging drummer. Always musical! Thanks for the vid.

  • Damn!!! Finally, a drummer who isn't afraid to turn off the damn snares and go for broke! He is so clean with everything....amazing!!

  • Al Foster is only underrated because he primarily plays Jazz music. The guy is an absolute master and those of us who play know it.

  • @swampdweller5 My favourite drummer. A modern Max Roach: incredibly musical playing. So full of feeling, space, and dynamics.

  • For me this was like finding the holy grail...

Foster has long been a favorite since his 'head down, ass-kicking' days with Miles.

It's VERY hard to find out what he's up to at any given moment and if anyone here knows of a website or contact info for him please drop me a line. I'd love to see him live here in LA

Totally unique drummer who desefves t be far better known.

  • Al Foster, an underrated drummer!!

  • Al Foster is the best!

Yeah, send me every Al Foster you have or else:)!!!!

  • al foster is amazing and so is joe please post the rest of it
