He doesn't need to go and lay out 3K on a pretty little vintage Gretsch bebop kit in the hope of sounding authentic, he IS the sound. What's this kit, a generic Yamaha or something? Sounds amazing.
During the drum solo he was keeping an Swing figure using the foot Hi-hat like ostinato and improvising nice and complex melodies with toms,cymbals,snare,kick...The Master Masters,no doubt about that.
Been listening to Al (with Miles mostly) for a very long time. Haven't EVER seen him play though until now. Thank you VERY much for posting this. I am speechless.
I saw Foster with Randy Brecker a bunch of years back....pretty interesting pairing...couldn't keep my eyes and ears of Foster, but Brecker tried to steal the show as usual. fucking walrus.....
State of the Tenor is live at the Village Vanguard and has playing very similar to this video. It's the same group as this except Ron Carter plays Bass instead of Dave Holland
Foster has long been a favorite since his 'head down, ass-kicking' days with Miles.
It's VERY hard to find out what he's up to at any given moment and if anyone here knows of a website or contact info for him please drop me a line. I'd love to see him live here in LA
Totally unique drummer who desefves t be far better known.
One of the greatest, most tasteful drummers, to ever play.

He was so brilliant,so power and so smooth...

Al Foster is only underrated because he primarily plays Jazz music. The guy is an absolute master and those of us who play know it.

@swampdweller5 My favourite drummer. A modern Max Roach: incredibly musical playing. So full of feeling, space, and dynamics.
