i would shorten the lead lengths. if you cut the length in half, you half the external resistance(not the resistance of the "load) and reduce inductance(higher rise time and higher peak current. BOOM!

I have a mechanical (pneumatical) spark gap. Works with 12V relay, and a little 8bar compressor.

Mainly I use neon sign transformer with a half wave rectifier , but pole pigs are also good for charging them. The half wave rectifier consist of 50 pieces of 1N5408 (1kV 3A) diodes in series.
