  • There songs make me sad. They remind me of the times my brother was here and times of being a child and not caring about wat happened in life.

  • uh, i can't even listen to this. Such a great time in my life listening to this album from start to finish, almost every day! Such a weird feeling of nostalgia. This album was genius and I miss it terribly.

  • That was awesome, didn't see the roses coming..

  • its nice to see jenny lewis at least somewhat sober playing live

  • Epic wanding jenny.

  • wow

i love the postal service to pieces but this was a terrible performance.....

    @hpsfl

I was able to learn how to program these kind of beats in a matter of hours.

It's really easy actually. Nowhere near as hard as playing the drums, which i can't do.

apathiest is right, anyone with a general knowledge of music theory can use a drum machine and make something that sounds good.

But having a live drummer for an electronica band would be terrible. :-0

  • @langanman idk, thom yorke pulled off electro drums live in epic fashion on his solo tour. the beck percussionists played all the percussion and samples. flea on bass, nigel on keys. it was one of the best sounding shows i've been to

  • @ aPaThEiSt he has a drum machine because he wanted an electronica band. Did you know Ben plays the drums? I know he isn't the one making the beats but it does take skill to program it. I play drum and I have an akai lpd8, which is a pad midi controller and I think it's harder programing the beats than playing them on the drums. I really doubt you can even compare to Jimmy tamberello's programing. It IS an electronica band, so their gonna have a drum machine.

  • shit this is awesome. where/when was this???

  • For a second I thought Jenny was waving a wand or something. You know, Hermione Granger reference.

  • ben is officially the coolest guy ever.

  • the way ben dances around the stage just made my life.

  • This song would have been way better live if Jen Wood was on stage singing her parts.

  • I seriously love Ben's hopping. It's cute.

  • i would kill to see him/them live, kill. and i mean brutally.

  • Poor Ben. He's amazing live, but he sounds so tired in this. Like he's out of breath so he cant hit the right notes sometimes.

  • @LukeKellylives its true.

  • one of the best bands of all time. :)

  • ??? Apples and oranges, tiger...I think the soul of Postal Service (and Death Cab, for that matter) is the lyric content (quality stuff, btw) and a raw human voice unaltered conveys the humanity, not dependent on a live drum kit or acoustic guitar lick.

  • autotune is used to fix mistakes made in vocal takes when an artist when an artist cant properly perform the part. drum machines/synths are used to create music, not to cover up a lack of talent. there's a difference

  • I didn't say that autotune and using electronic tracks for drums etc was THE SAME, I only asked if anyone else saw some cognitive dissonance.

    But yes, apples and oranges.

  • i dont understand what you are trying to say. He opposes vocoders and autotune yes, but a drum machine is not a vocoder or autotune. A drum machine is a synthesizer that reproduces the sounds of drums. Unless its a sample based drum machine in which a pre-recorded sound of a drum is played back when triggered. Hope I cleared things up

  • I never said anywhere that a drum machine is a vocoder.

I'm alluding to the reason why both are used.

It can be construed that people resort to drum machines when they aren't talented on the drums, or when they cannot hire a drummer (compare with ability to sing).

  • @aPaThEiSt

Umm, no. Drum machine programming takes enough skill to be a half decent drummer; programmign thse parts would be tougher than playing them.

  • Explain. All it requires is some knowledge of music theory, how to use a music program like Cubase etc. Unless you're using a physical drum machine, then you just need to know how to set it up. Not a lot of skill needed here, a probably a few hours at most reading up, whilst drums take years of practice to master certain techniques etc.

  • TLDR version: drums require a keener sense of rhythm and stamina, a drum machine requires you to be able to use computer programs.

  • @aPaThEiSt Hardly. It's a certain sound that some people go for. I play drums, and well, but I often use drum machines because I enjoy the electronic sound that they give me. You need to consider some artistic perspective before you criticize.

  • TheSensei8, do you know what set theory is? I never said that someone (like yourself) couldn't fall into both categories.

You may be able to play the drums, and be able to program a drum machine, but there are those who can't play drums, and fall back on a drum machine because they can't play, and won't hire someone that can, or learn the instrument.

From an artistic perspective, it would seem that live drums sound much richer and beautiful than electronic drums.

  • @aPaThEiSt shit, set theory eh. that sounds too complicated for us youtube users to understand......... you're wrong in thinking that electronic drums are less artistic and beautiful. what they allow for, is someone who has an idea in their head, whatever that sound may be, to play it. you're not confined by the usual hi-hat snare patterns of rock. you're not confined to playing any typical sounds at all. you can do whatever you want, and so from an artistic perspective, they're much better.

  • You're awesome for having Live video of this!

  • they use to date

  • They use what to date?

  • Heh heh

  • Bens Really Drunk. loll

  • Comment removed

  • i love the song

  • GOD i love this song! its like a story.. but a song!!!

  • Well done Sherlock.

  • lol wtf? i didnt even write that.

  • Write what?

  • Pure Awesomeness. Oh, and what's that thing Jenny's waving around at around 2:42?

  • she's playing an electronic drum pad, and being overly physical with the drum stick.

  • lol oh. Is it making the clapping noise?

  • does anyone know what gear did the postal service use ? i've never been able to find that information anywhere. but here we can clearly see a Nord Electro but for the rest i dunno..

  • ive done a bit of work with jimmy tamborello (other half of the postal service). he actually uses cubase sx to write/record most of his stuff. he has the two machine's from a company called elektron. Although all the drums on the record where from a sample bank he has. he has a korg micro korg. variety of synths. so yeah

  • Was this at Lollapalooza?

  • copante

  • is it me, or does Ben sound horribad?

I've seen him live before, and he sounded better than this.

  • horribad?

  • who yelled bullsh**?

  • hahaha, disrespectful but funny comment.

  • Just so everyone knows Jenny Lewis did not originally sing on this song. She's still a total babe though.

  • um... yea she did, i think this was the only one she really did tho, songs like clark gable are the ones she didn't sing in.

  • no she didn't, Jen Wood sang this song. you can tell it's not her because in the recording it doesn't sound like someone's dying.

  • no no she did lol

  • no no she didn't. And Jenny Lewis' voice is amazing.

  • Ouch. I love Jenny.

  • love this song. jenny lewis is my fav.

  • where was this? were they opening for the roots? i thought that's what he said at the beginning

  • love this song. love jenny.

  • ben and jenny just keep dancing!.

    THAtS SOOO DOPE!!!!!!!!!

  • hahahaha.....ben and jenny just keep dancing

    THATS So dope!!!!!!

  • i love how hes doing his guitar swing but theres no guitar :P

  • Man,Ben is hiperactive in this video,he is awesome XD

  • this is fucking amazing... gotta love ben!

  • jenny lewis is so hot!!!!!!!!!1

  • i'd feel special if i were there..

i just want to know the next time they play live..if i know about it early enough i'd probably fly just about anywhere..

    i'm pretty desperate.

it won't be for a long while im sure, though, with dcfc's awesome new album out, rocking my socks. i may see them in montreal!

    pumped!

  • Try looking at their myspace, that should have some tour dates on it.

  • he's said they wont release an album before 2010, but they will eventaully

  • Shit. That was so good... Where's the new album Ben?!

  • It was a special thing. One of the very few times they played live. This was Sasquatch at the Gorge in George, WA, Memorial Day '04.

  • where was this? when was this? i wish the audio wasn't off. did u know the audio is a bit off?

  • Awesome... I wish I knew about TPS touring... or was this a special thing?

  • please stop? all of you? you're fucking ridiculous.

the dancing, the vocals, where this was, when this was; just stop with the same things, especially these senseless ones.

    someone please be interesting.

    thanks :]

  • Try coming down off your high horse for long enough to realise that you're just as boring as the rest of us

  • man i'm the worst one here. i'm not on any high horse. people are just missing the point. oh i don't feel like logging out and back in again...this is just another account

  • thats pretty messed up. they just wanted to know. dont be an asshole

  • Their is Nothing Better!

  • hockey doesn't play quarters.

  • Soccer might.

  • lacrosse maybe? i don't know but that verse sure sounds good the way it is.

  • i met jenny last month !

  • Great song and jenny lewis voice is incredible!

  • i dont like the way he moves. he like twists from side to side like a lame dance move from the 70's. i love the postal service though, so i can bear it.

  • imnotbright- you should email Ben your personal approval of his dance moves, I'm sure it will come as a relief lol

  • You guys are dumb, he is singing live, he the guys speed on the camera was slow

  • will they ever play another show?

  • they should...

they're recording their new album right now

  • do you know for sure that they are recording another album or is that just hear say?

  • i read that they got like six songs done so far for the album.

  • That's the best thing i've heard all week! :D

  • if that's the case then here's the worst you'll hear. they've stopped recording anything related to PS. ben has a new album coming out in march for deathcab and he will be touring hard after. the vegas show is gonna be tite. anyway..yeah and jenny is gunna be pretty busy too with rilo kiley up and touring again.

  • To be honest, in a way, that's good. I mean, it was a fantastic album and it was only a side project. I think if they split after recording it, then it makes the album a little more special.

  • My fav songs, i never got to see them live =/ and now i can't....

  • man I can't believe that Ben would Lip Sink

  • Haha, how ignorant...

  • Hes not you fucking idiot, the sound is off by 5 seconds

  • what bullshit. Why the hell would Ben Gibbard not sing live?

  • i love it!

  • listen at the first some guy screamed bullshit, and so when ben gibbard starts to sing his voice is like kind of broken, could it be this the reason?

  • he give's she the flowers, and she trowed to the public, like somekind of garbage this explains ben gibbard melancolic lyrics, lol i'm just joking, but i would be funny

  • The quality of singing can be described in one word: Karaoke.

And dont get me wrong, i love the song and the band, i think the only reason they were subpar was because they were jumping around.

    Still a good vid.

  • Thanks for uploading this!!! I've wanted to see a live postal service video for a while...just didn't find it. Did they do like one concert ever?

  • this is the worst I've EVER heard ben.

  • This is awesome!

  • MUST come back together

  • my dream!

  • ben is amazing :)

  • HAHA

The guy who says BULLSHIT in the beginning

    funny

    but

I don't understand why he said bullshit

Is it because Ben said something about raining??

  • yeah he wasn't funny. he sounded like an asshole

  • Hey, I didn't say HE was funny

It was the way it was random and very loud

    geezzzzz XD

  • ben gibbard is a musical GENIOUS

  • spell genius correct if you intend to call him that...

  • The "chick" is Jenny Lewis, from the band Rilo Kiley.
