uh, i can't even listen to this. Such a great time in my life listening to this album from start to finish, almost every day! Such a weird feeling of nostalgia. This album was genius and I miss it terribly.
@langanman idk, thom yorke pulled off electro drums live in epic fashion on his solo tour. the beck percussionists played all the percussion and samples. flea on bass, nigel on keys. it was one of the best sounding shows i've been to
@ aPaThEiSt he has a drum machine because he wanted an electronica band. Did you know Ben plays the drums? I know he isn't the one making the beats but it does take skill to program it. I play drum and I have an akai lpd8, which is a pad midi controller and I think it's harder programing the beats than playing them on the drums. I really doubt you can even compare to Jimmy tamberello's programing. It IS an electronica band, so their gonna have a drum machine.

Does anyone else see cognitive dissonance when Ben Gibbard openly opposes the use of vocoders and autotune, yet has an electronica side project (TPS) that uses drum machines etc?
??? Apples and oranges, tiger...I think the soul of Postal Service (and Death Cab, for that matter) is the lyric content (quality stuff, btw) and a raw human voice unaltered conveys the humanity, not dependent on a live drum kit or acoustic guitar lick.
autotune is used to fix mistakes made in vocal takes when an artist when an artist cant properly perform the part. drum machines/synths are used to create music, not to cover up a lack of talent. there's a difference
i dont understand what you are trying to say. He opposes vocoders and autotune yes, but a drum machine is not a vocoder or autotune. A drum machine is a synthesizer that reproduces the sounds of drums. Unless its a sample based drum machine in which a pre-recorded sound of a drum is played back when triggered. Hope I cleared things up
I never said anywhere that a drum machine is a vocoder.
I'm alluding to the reason why both are used.
It can be construed that people resort to drum machines when they aren't talented on the drums, or when they cannot hire a drummer (compare with ability to sing).
Explain. All it requires is some knowledge of music theory, how to use a music program like Cubase etc. Unless you're using a physical drum machine, then you just need to know how to set it up. Not a lot of skill needed here, a probably a few hours at most reading up, whilst drums take years of practice to master certain techniques etc.
@aPaThEiSt Hardly. It's a certain sound that some people go for. I play drums, and well, but I often use drum machines because I enjoy the electronic sound that they give me. You need to consider some artistic perspective before you criticize.
TheSensei8, do you know what set theory is? I never said that someone (like yourself) couldn't fall into both categories.
You may be able to play the drums, and be able to program a drum machine, but there are those who can't play drums, and fall back on a drum machine because they can't play, and won't hire someone that can, or learn the instrument.
From an artistic perspective, it would seem that live drums sound much richer and beautiful than electronic drums.
@aPaThEiSt shit, set theory eh. that sounds too complicated for us youtube users to understand......... you're wrong in thinking that electronic drums are less artistic and beautiful. what they allow for, is someone who has an idea in their head, whatever that sound may be, to play it. you're not confined by the usual hi-hat snare patterns of rock. you're not confined to playing any typical sounds at all. you can do whatever you want, and so from an artistic perspective, they're much better.
does anyone know what gear did the postal service use ? i've never been able to find that information anywhere. but here we can clearly see a Nord Electro but for the rest i dunno..
ive done a bit of work with jimmy tamborello (other half of the postal service). he actually uses cubase sx to write/record most of his stuff. he has the two machine's from a company called elektron. Although all the drums on the record where from a sample bank he has. he has a korg micro korg. variety of synths. so yeah
My darkest fantasy is to bend Jenny Lewis over the kitchen sink and absolutely have my way with her. Im sorry... I cant help it. Shes such an f-ing babe.
man i'm the worst one here. i'm not on any high horse. people are just missing the point. oh i don't feel like logging out and back in again...this is just another account
i dont like the way he moves. he like twists from side to side like a lame dance move from the 70's. i love the postal service though, so i can bear it.
if that's the case then here's the worst you'll hear. they've stopped recording anything related to PS. ben has a new album coming out in march for deathcab and he will be touring hard after. the vegas show is gonna be tite. anyway..yeah and jenny is gunna be pretty busy too with rilo kiley up and touring again.
To be honest, in a way, that's good. I mean, it was a fantastic album and it was only a side project. I think if they split after recording it, then it makes the album a little more special.
he give's she the flowers, and she trowed to the public, like somekind of garbage this explains ben gibbard melancolic lyrics, lol i'm just joking, but i would be funny
There songs make me sad. They remind me of the times my brother was here and times of being a child and not caring about wat happened in life.

i love the postal service to pieces but this was a terrible performance.....
@hpsfl
I was able to learn how to program these kind of beats in a matter of hours.
It's really easy actually. Nowhere near as hard as playing the drums, which i can't do.
apathiest is right, anyone with a general knowledge of music theory can use a drum machine and make something that sounds good.
But having a live drummer for an electronica band would be terrible. :-0

Umm, no. Drum machine programming takes enough skill to be a half decent drummer; programmign thse parts would be tougher than playing them.

TLDR version: drums require a keener sense of rhythm and stamina, a drum machine requires you to be able to use computer programs.
