I shoot right handed. I always find that the safety/decock lever on the usp gets in the way of proper thumb placement when it's off safety. When the lever is in the up position (safe) it's not a problem, but you can't fire a gun with safety on lol. Anybody else have this problem?
I agree with that 2 thumbs forward being the best way to shot, the only probably with HK's is if you grip it right handed you have the safety digging into your thumb and your thumb ridding on top of the long ass slide release HK uses which can prevent the release from actually locking back the slide on last round if your thumbs are longer. Makes it very annoying to shot once you start notice it.
I just got some Chip McCormick Comp grips, very slinder, I have small hands and two "bent Pinkey fingers", was born that way. makes it harder to type, and other things, but the thinner grips I got and the grip I learned hear, I haven't been to the range but, so far it feels and looks great. I was thinking about the Lazer Lyte? laser they have for the recoil spring "tube" at the front of the gun, just under the bushing and barrel. they go for close to 400.00 though so, I wont do it very soon.
I really appreciate you getting back to me. I was JUST practicing holding my 1911 again, and could kinda see that the thumb on my left (strong) hand could come up a little and it could be worked around. Thank you very much. There is another question they ask how far apart are the grip screws, of course I can measure this but I thought there would be a standard. Richard in Seattle
Thank God, another let handed shooter!!! I thought I was the only one!! That's the grip I use exactly. I have a 1911 .45 by RIA and I ws thinking about some Crimson Trace Laser Grips. well, they don't make them with the laser on the right side of the gun so I wrote them an email and asked that question, someone named Heather said if you don't have a high thumb grip the Crimson trace works just as good for left handed shooters. I just don't see that happening, My thumbs would block the laser.
@confront5 I have had 3 laser grips and it's never a problem in fact it works better because when your finger is off the trigger and on the gun frame it does not block the laser like a right handed shooter does....
My husband took me to the fireing range and did really well for a first timer. (i stood in the middle) But this video really helps bc i would lose my grip on the gun a few times. Thanks ;)
What do you do if you have really big hands, so that your fingers wrap almost right around the grip with your strong hand, and to get your palm from the other hand down onto the grip, it forces the strong hand off of a firm contact in the web and thus loosens the grip? Do you just place your weak-palm over top of your fingers? Really need help here...hope you can suggest something. Thanks.
do you happen to own an hk45 at the moment? i've had an issue where my grip style causes the mag release to be hit during recoil and the mag falls out. not sure if it's my thumb, trigger finger, or what. just wondering if you might have any suggestions for me in that regard. great vids!
left handed shooters are a dying breed. I'am a left handedshooter and i notice a lack of left handed holsters. Whats up with that. not everyone is right handed. thanks for the vids. btw like your hk vids. p.s. the new hk45 looks badass.
i'm left handed and starting to get into IPSC and i realized my right hand thumb was a little too high. i shoot a tanfoglio, and i realized every 50 or so shots my trigger finger hold hit my thumb. basically, this video made me realize i need to keep both thumbs straight. THANKS!
I switched to this grip last year, by far the single most important change I've made! I also squared up my stance, shoulder width apart with knees slightly bent. This really helped my follow up shots.
@GMGvanS YES you will get a better grip when you actually use all of your support hand buuuuut using three fingers saves ounces off the gun weight but your milage may vary. i enjoy watching nutnfancy's 9mm pistols muzzle flip b/c he's so dang tacticool : )
what about your ellbows? do you have to keep it straight or slitly bend?....when i shoot i keep it sligtly bend i notice pain in arms... just learning lol
For a 1911, I use the same grip except my right hand rests on the thumb safety (Im right handed btw). Thats whats said to be the most efficient way of holding a firearm because the higher the grip you have on it, the more control you can get on it. Thats why I dont like glocks because if I grip too high, then I get sliced. I was actually instructed not to grip too high on a Glock so that went against my natural form of shooting.
Another suggestion maybe: it helps me to put all the grip in that hand and have your trigger hand a little more relaxed, got me shooting a lot better, even in competition
Also, forgot to say I grip my pistols pretty much exactly the same way, always have. This was just natural for me.. it definitely will help you place your shots if you dont have a good grip.
This aka the thumbs forward grip.. surprisingly when i used to shoot and not really into guns i used to use a crude version of it but i would cross my left thumb over my right (im a right handed shooter but left handed go figure..) The thumbs forward felt odd @ first but now i cant imagine shooting any other way. you have the majority of the grip encompassed and it is the proper gun hold.
@Supermassively alot of the time you'll shoot left if you arent putting enough of your finger in the trigger. try moving your finger a little farther onto the trigger (not too much or it will go right) and see if it helps.
i swear i got to quit watching these hk vids im so pissed i sold my usp compact i paid over $800 new for it they say sig is a cadalliac i guess hk is a benz
My good sir i was wondering if there was anyway you would make a vid taking apart a 9mm. I am going off o boot camp soon and know that they teach you there but you know be one step ahead. Im sure there are vids on youtube but i know you really know your stuff. thanks
Great vid as usual Paul. A person shooting a Glock should use a good grip like that, as well as learn that damn trigger. Who would have thought, I would start off my Shooting life with one of the hardest triggers to master (Oh Joy) lol, but getting better day by day...that with dry firing has me hitting so grouped right now
I agree 100% ive bveen shooting for a long time and have tried gripping a pistol eevry way known to man. this by far works best for me. i hold tighter groups and just consistantly hit the target more. everyone is differant but if you havnt i would reccomend everyone atleast try it this.
This is how my CCP teacher told us to grip a handgun. took the class about two years ago and this is still the best way to shot for me. Great vid man.
why have you not fliped the safety/decocker levers on your hk's to the right side since your a lefty ? whoulden't it be better for you to work the safety ?
I hold it right hand nice gun . My gun cost like £199

Dude, you know what's the ultimate tactical pistol grip?
Putting your pointer finger of your left hand on the front of the trigger guard.
That perfect for WROL/SHTF situations, just like my Xootr.
