I've never seen one of these before! I heard these were banned from demolition derbys because they would kill everything. The car had a lot of metal to crush, and the big 440 would run for a long time without coolant after the radiator got smashed!
19 feet 8 inches long, 6 feet 7 inches wide, 126 inch wheel base. 1973 is my fav year for the C-body style - although the 1969-1972 had that evil looking front end with the headlights sunken into the grille whereas the 73's aren't. This car shown on this youtube clip is a basic 73 NYorker Sedan WITH a center post between the front and back seats. The 73 NYorker Sedan Brougham did NOT have the center post so when the windows are down its like 1 giant window rolled down (as Albee213 said below)
What a gorgeous New Yorker, love the 1972 and 73 taillights! I wish we could turn back the clock to a time when gorgeous cars were designed in Highland Park and Detroit wasn't yet killed by left wing politicians. Whatever happens though, Chrysler cars will always be number 1 in the world. Amazing designs, amazing engineering!
@73849309378 Pardon? Government restrictions and huge government programs by the "progressives" are killing the western world as we know it. A big government never leads to anything good as is now being witnessed in the US. Stupid people are mislead by the politicians for more and more handouts which can never be financed. The hole becomes deeper and deeper and so far the solution is massive amounts of the same. Where did free the market system go? Individual freedom? Or common sense?
@ImForwardlook Nice try, but the exact OPPOSITE of what you stated is what has happened thanks to the Fascist, Laissez-faire policies of Reagan and every president since including Clinton, who signed the American job-killing NAFTA into law. And these are what are "killing the western world as we know it.," not big government. It's the LACK of gov. restrictions that has killed the middle class. You should keep your politics to yourself in automotive videos. You just opened up a can of worms.
@ImForwardlook ... and are you really naive enough to think that cars today would even have seat belts in them if "left wing politicians" and "big-government progressives" hadn't held a shotgun to the automakers' heads?
i could agree with you if corporate america would "do the right thing" without being told, but the sad fact is they have proven time and again that they won't. period.
I used to have on, 1973 New Yorker Broughm (I think I miss spelled it). 440 4b and a hard top no posts in the windows. When they were rolled down it was a giant window from front to rear. I got 12mpg in the city and 17 on the freeway. I loved that car!!!!!!!! I had it when I was too young to take care of it and sold the car before I totaly destroyed it.

There's no way a 70's Chrysler product would ever live long enough to turn over- not even close. In fact, I don't think it will go too far beyond the original 45k that's on it.
why? whats wrong with them?? its hard to screw up a full sized vehicle....the big 3 made them for years..... if it was a mid-sized like a valiant or aspen then that would make sense
maybe you had bad luck with one but my grampa owned 2 mid 70s chryslers for a long time a 76 cordoba and a 77 volare and he put over 200,000 miles on them both and the cordoba he still has he put a 440 in it though and the volare when he sold still ran strong and didnt use any oil but that had the slant six thats a great motor and i own a classic 1980 cordoba Chrysler products are great
@ChomuSclavus If you see the car in person, the evidence is all there to show the 45,000 miles is indeed original. Hell, the little cardboard splash guards that are attached to the front subframe are all still attached and not damaged. There is NO rust, NO wear on the seats. All stickers still present paint, while not perfect, cleans up quite well with a LOT of elbow grease. The car now has just over 47,000 miles on it. The best mileage i've gotten out of it has been 11mpg mixed driving.
@EgaoNoGenki I guess, but a Hummer has none of the class and style that the NYer has, imho. The carb could use a rebuild and tune from sitting so long, and I'd gain some mileage for sure. Bad accelerator pump and sticking choke will eat some fuel up. I've also not given it a tune up, or removed all the horrid smog equipment. But even with all that, it's a 440 cubic inch motor with enough torque to pull a full size camper or loaded car trailer. She rides great booking 80-85 down the highway. :)

1973 would have been the last year before the government mandated detuning engines to decrease emissions.

@just888another888ide Yeah. Those were 4 door hardtop models and offered a great view to either side. They also looked the best, IMHO.

This is one... ...WIDE... ...car!
(Maybe the 45,000 miles was actually 145,000 or 245,000 and the 5-digit odometer rolled over from 99,999 to 00000 once or twice.)
What was the fuel mileage on this thing?
I'm thinking of getting a late-model Crown Vic former police cruiser that is nearly as big as this car, but has 18 in the city / 26 on the highway.
ChomuSclavus 3 years ago
gas on her is approx 13 mpg on a good day i had one in 84
afterburner159 3 years ago
Wow. And a full-sized '09 Chevy Suburban can get 14 in the city, 20 on the highway. I'm sure a Suburban is heavier than this New Yorker still.

@starion88esir Thanks. I used to be Chomu. Anyway, I suppose at 11 MPG mixed, I'd be no worse-off driving a Hummer...
