for all you fools saying this is an FG42 you need to get yout information from better sources than COD
The M1941 Johnson light machine gun was developed from a semi-automatic rifle designed by Melvin C. Johnson during the late 1930s. It was intended to fulfill the role of a squad automatic weapon, and possibly replace the venerable Browning M1918 BAR. Johnson’s gun was significantly lighter than the BAR, while having a quick-detachable barrel and a magazine of the same capacity.
those saying its an FG42 play to much COD and are feeding you false information this is an all american gun and WASNT taken from the Germans nor did they take ours. Both the Fg42 and the 1941 Johnson are extremely rare the FG42 was built for paratroopers using the MG42 round but in a smaller gun and was also select fire. this gun is bigger and was designed for light infantry purposes and as a replacement to the old BAR and also to be lighter than a 1919 these are the facts
This weapon has nothing to do with the FG42, they have a completly different operating system. I swear the developers of Call of Duty have a lot to answer for.
@Bushmasters334 Yup it's a 30-06. My dad had one of the M1941 Johnson rifles back in the early 80's. He sold it to a buddy who has since passed on, so it's long gone now. I sure would love to have it back.
This came out in 1941, the FG42 came out in 1942. It would almost seem possible that Germans copied it. Unfotunately, it only saw limited action in the Pacific. A german never picked one up. Still, a magnificent weapon and I envy whoever can call it their's!
@PureKrudd The fg42 was more likley inspired by the Kg/1940 used by the swedish military during ww2 (it was designed by a germany company named Knorr-Bremse)
It was designed (completed) in 1935-36 so well before the Johnson.
And since it was german designed it would be far easier for the germans to get there hands on.
Its a very nice weapon tobad it had so many problems compared to the BAR.
Would have loved to see this baby being made in large numbers.
The Johnson was a very good design and would have been a good weapon for our troops. the reason the Army used it very little was that they were already committed to the BAR.
@zombiesarescary Nah man, Its not. The autoloading mechanism is very different. FG42 is gas operated like a M1 Garand or AK-47. This gun is Short-Recoil operated like a Barrett M107 or MG42.
If this was made in WW2 Germany, it'd be far more famous. Side loading LMG's are a thoughtful innovation. I thought that it was barrel-recoil operated, like the m1919. Shame about the complexity, the one country in ww2 that could afford to splash out on complex weapons didn't.
Great information. I did not know the 1st Special Forces utilized this weapon. My uncle was in the 1st. (after being in the 4th battalion Darby rangers).

@zenos700 IDK I've owned a BAR and the Johnson is about 4" shorter and about 5 lbs lighter (unloaded). But I may have got my numbers crossed. The BAR I had was a m1922 @ approx 24 lbs and approx 47=48 " long. Mine had the dual rate of fire mod, which was nice cause I'm a small guy and the 550-600 rpm was hell to control. Many thanks
@dudejo On the one I've handled (semi-auto conversion from a regular 1941 Johnson rifle's receiver), it would only accept the 20 rounds. I would assume the automatic version is the same, but I could be wrong.
@combine002 The fg 42 was a gas operated weapon and this was a long recoil based weapon and the barrel moves in cycling as a browning Auto 5 . Yes the magazine also goes in side but was designed so that gunner wouldn't be so prominent on horizon and could be lower profile.
@combine002 The FG 42's real claim to fame could be the use of sheet metal in the receiver as all other full power semi auto's used ordinance steel machined from solid block of steel and this was a real challenge to designers and Germany industry did a lot with what they had but a lack of petroleum and too many Russians may have been biggest problems. Check out the Johnson rifle that the MG version derived from and its easy to see why MG version side loaded also. Thanks for posting 002
@l2a3sterling it wasn't a copy, they were both seperately designed to fill special roles. They just turned out to be similar. This is based on an interview with a gunner from the first special service force.
@yomammaland no......just just go. get you ass out of here. I really hate gamers. they know nothing about real life guns. they only know whats in video game. do me a favor and learn about guns
@yomammaland It actually entered service before the FG 42 1941 vs 1943 so maybe the germans copied the johnson. The johnson had a recoil operated machanism and the fg42 was gas and a recoil operated function cannot become gas fouled and had in common with browning 1919 machine gun which had proven reliability. All firearms are going to bear some resembalance because people are similar in design and some aspects of firearms design are form follows function mandate.
You can watch a design flaw of the gun in action. As he shoots a burst, the weight from the magazine pushes the gun from side to side. So a burst will have a very wide arc of fire. Useful maybe for a bunch of guys running at you?
You gotta real piece of history right there. This MG was issued only in very limited quantities. It was also built to a very high standard, so I assume it performance shows that.
@weenershnitzel336 They're very different calibers. .306 would be the size of a round, .30-'06 basically stands for 30 caliber round, created in 1906. The uploader made the mistake here since the Johnson is a .30-'06.
its actiualy an LMG. "Light Machine Gun". not a full auto rifle or MG. "machine gun" a actiul MG cant be fired without a tripod or mount. ( unless you want your arm torn off) a smg "sub machine gun" shoots pistol rounds. like the thompson 30. my grandfather was a cernal in japan during WW2. they drove the jeeps "willies" into the ocean because they whernt worth bringing back. also i didnt get this from call of duty ( which is not historiculy correct at all )
The Johnson or Johnny Gun was given to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) or the Devil's Brigade as they became known to the Germans in Italy. The weapon gave them an edge against the prepared positions on the Nazis. Thanks for posting
Most of the Johnson LMG and Johnson Rifles were acquired by the Marine Corps for the Marine Raider Batallions and Paramarine Regiment. The Johnson weapons were far superior to the M1 and the BAR (from those that used both in combat). Final versions fo the LMG could use magazine or disintegrating belt. The LMG is also the grandfather to the M16
Here in Sweden there is a great police/detective film made in the 70's (yeah, old but still very well-made and great story!) called "Mannen på taket" which basically means "The Man on the roof". The story is about a man who desperately shoot at the police from a roof somewhere in Stockholm, and he is using a Johnson M41 machine gun, they even say it in the film.
@iwasborntohunt357 there's a website that has them called miltecharms, they have the semi-auto version. But you would need a price quote. Hope this helps :-)
@Padreblue11 Only ever seen two of these... one was semi-auto ($10,500, which is roughly market value for a semi auto), and one was form 4 in... Florida I think it was (could be wrong, it's been a while)... that one was $78,000.
Insanely expensive pieces of equipment, but immensely historically important.
The U.S. Army obtained 125 Johnson rifles from USMC for 2 tons of explosives during WWII.
The rifles were issued to the 10th Mountain Division (?).

Damn music! I was planning on recording this gun sound for my Battlefield 1942 mod, but the music ruined that whole thing.

@iwasborntohunt357 there's a website that has them called miltecharms, they have the semi-auto version. But you would need a price quote. Hope this helps :-)
Padreblue11 10 months ago
@Padreblue11 Only ever seen two of these... one was semi-auto ($10,500, which is roughly market value for a semi auto), and one was form 4 in... Florida I think it was (could be wrong, it's been a while)... that one was $78,000.
Insanely expensive pieces of equipment, but immensely historically important.
