Richard Adams took a lot of crap for the way he portrayed does in the books, esp. since a lot of what he wrote about bucks being tops in rabbit colonies turned out to be wrong. He wrote a sequel years later called Tales From Watership Down, in which he revisited the rabbits. He added some strong doe characters, including Flyairth, who inspired Spartina in the TV show, and told the story of Campion, who became a hero, friend of Watership, and eventually a guardian angel!

Blackberry as a doe in the t.v. series for kids makes sense. This creates a little bit of drama. In the book though, she would have been pregnant within a few days of reaching the down.

she makes a great strong female leading character and she's one of the cleverest

the producers of the show prolly realized the book was sexist in terms of having only one or two does as important charaacters and they wanted to make it less sexist

True but the series uses their creative liscence and because they want to make it more exciting for the watchers and to get a wider range of fewers, they added love interests and changed the plot around. I think all the adaptions are good and I agree with MulliganPlease and think that Blackberry was a good, strong, clever female character.

Yes but they all we're strangely drawn into liking him. Maybe not as much as for example Fiver and Hazel, but they did keep mentioning how they would like it if he joined the warren.

In the end of the book when he takes over Efrafa he agrees to send some of the Efrafan rabbits to make a warren between Efrafa and Watership Down with the Watership down rabbits. He isn't totally all that bad.
