@knut761 - Well the English/British thing is irrelevant. Beckham is both English and British and the U.S. had a war with Britain not just England. My point is that thanksgiving is a harvest festival. We still have them in the U.K. where we go to church but also collect food for the poor. My point is simply that Jimmy Kimmel doesn't know what thanksgiving is.
its amazing how humble beckham has stayed despite being probably the most recognizable athlete in the world and one of the most adored...pretty admirable
@NorthWeezy2010 The holiday was introduced by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. However, the early settlers did have thanksgivings whenever good things happened.
In any case, getting back to Jimmy Kimmel's statement, it had nothing to do with victory over the English.
@Cobomarket Actually pioneers in north america were dying of starvation because they weren't use to winter conditions in north america. Aboriginals gave them a full winters supply of meat as well as having a huge feast.
@ryanfan1967 I was thinking that just that when he said it, "That's not what Thanksgiving is about". What's messed up is that David, who's not from here, either believed it or was too astounded that he knew more about than Jimmy and let him save face.
@TomMichaels101 George Washington who was the leader of the revolutionary force in the American Revolutionary War, proclaimed Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga.
@mnmgrly1 There were all sorts of different "thanksgiving" celebrations held back in those days, for various reasons. But the one we celebrate now, on a late-November Thursday, was formally established by Lincoln, and has its roots in the Pilgrims.
Anyway, somehow I doubt Jimmy Kimmel is all tuned in to a onetime 1777 thanksgiving event tied to a specific battle. I think his remark was just a gaffe!
@TomMichaels101 the Pilgrims successfully broke from the Church of England and were celebrating their prosperity. God almighty guess 15 people slept through American History.
@drumtilludrop610 - Harvest festival celebrations have nothing whatsoever to do with "a triumph over" the British people.
Even if it was celebrating successfully breaking from the Church of England, which it isn't, this still isn't a triumph over anyone. I'm an atheist, does thins mean I have triumphed over Christianity and Islam?
Anyway it is nothing more than a harvest festival which is celebrated everywhere on earth and I think he is mixing it up with 4th July to be honest.
@WillShakespeare2007 I was remarking on what the Pilgrims were most definitely grateful for, namely, they survived and completed their objective and were living prosperously. So in a sense you are right, but I think that survival and success are essential to prosperity right? Thanksgiving in itself is not a specifically religious holiday, but I think for the pilgrims a key component of what constituted their thanks included a religious aspect.
@WillShakespeare2007 notice I said they were "celebrating their prosperity." One of the principle reasons the pilgrims left England was because they were not free to worship as they wished. I dont think he is mixing it up with July 4th but I dont think he truly understands thanksgiving either. In celebrating their prosperity I think it is safe to say they thanked God for more than just food. I think safety and success in their undertaking was probably high up on the list too
@WillShakespeare2007 even in this, as americans of different religious backgrounds, we can all celebrate what we are thankful for . . . after all we dont celebrate what the pilgrims were thankful for haha.
@drumtilludrop610 - The present holiday in the U.S., stems from the pilgrims, although there'd been earlier harvest festival celebration in the U.S., and they would no doubt have also been grateful to what they saw as their God providing a successful journey & harvest. However the celebration itself is just a harvest festival celebration which they'd have celebrated in the U.K. - we still do but we collect food and give it to the poor not have a big meal like the states. It's originally pagan.
@nozerider i don't comprehend the "get over it" i have nothing to get over from what i read. Yep the MLS is the best america has plus it's much better then the other sports that nation has.
@mavmach3 Wth are you talking about lol. Obviously David Beckham is hotter, that's why he's more popular. And I think everyone agrees, which is why his fame continues to grow :)
@mavmach3 its not bat looks......Its about skill, personality, class, discipline,Sportsmanship and so much more. But finally its about passion. David went to US just to spread football. How many footballers have u seen done that? Most of them just stick to their own league and go to clubs who give more money.
@manthisisboring I agree that it's not all about looks but Owen is also very talented and skillful. FYI, David came to America because he was offered a lot of money. I don't think any of the European clubs were willing to offer him as much since he really wasn't an elite player anymore.
@mavmach3 Well yea he was offered a lot of money but he was going to live in a place for 5 years where football meant nothing. No one in America knew what football was, everyone called in soccer. He saw it as a way to spread football so he went.He was killing a bird with 2 stones. Got paid to spread football in America.
@mavmach3 he went to the US because of his wife and kids. Instead of being a dick about it he thought OK I can really do something here for football rather than just fade away collecting a wage. He is a modern day Stanley Matthews, devoting his life to the sport, spreading it to the world just to see the emotions in people's eyes that only football can produce. He was not born with natural talent but earned it through years of hard work and practice, like any truly great sportsman.
@RelaxItsJustAFlare I don't think he really had an impact on soccer in the U.S. The popularity of said sport in the country hasn't expanded one bit since he arrived. Soccer just isn't as popular to Americans as football or baseball. Beckham has gotten too much publicity which is quite unfair because there are lots of more talented players than him like Zidane or Ronaldinho who haven't been given as much attention. Note, France and Brazil have recently won the world cup while England hasn't.

That would be Independence Day, I believe. Back to 3rd Grade History, Jimmy!
