  • No other singer has achieved the brilliance of this original.

  • i was only a kid when this song was recorded but when i saw Julies name in the news i immediately remembered this song, and how 'epic' it had seemed when i was only 6 years old, thanks for posting this video, I'm so glad i could hear this song for the first time in perhaps over 30 years...

  • @CandyChub I am glad you found this sound after all these years. Julie definitely does the definitive version of this song.

  • The ship you see is all that can be sent to the falklands(2012) due to defence cuts....

  • bellissimaaaaaa!!!! sa toccare il cuore...

  • Julie Covington is and always will be the only person able to sing this song full stop ...

  • @SALTYDOG7181 I couldn't agree more! No disrespect to Elaine Paige whatsoever, but Covington owns this song forever. Nothing can compare.

  • No1 the day i was born!

  • nobody sings this anywhere as good though many have tried.sibarny

  • Many have song this song since. But this song belongs to Julie she owns them all.

  • This is the original, not a version. Broadway musical is relative. Really it's a West End musical.

  • the fist and best

  • Beautiful, thanks!

  • great song, great version, for the best version ever listen to karen carpenters, the most wonderful voice of all time, such beauty in her singing.....

  • @a1diplomat Oh really, do behave yourself! Karen Carpenter was a fine singer, but there is absolutely no comparison. Covington's is NOT a ''version'' but the original and best!

  • i love julie saw her at the station. great chesterford, 30 years ago. this still makes me go cold. love it

  • The definitive version... I cannot believe anyone would not like this !!!!

  • how clear her vocals are, bring back Rock Follies!

  • Argentina es la mejor!!! :D :D esa cancion también es muy hermosa.... me gusta mucho

  • Moving Song (: but i dont think there is enough of a crescendo in the song , But still lovely (:

  • best version ever

  • ALLAKAD Playing : The 1st song that caught my attention when I arrived in Cyprus.

  • I found it at last - my most favorite version of this song.

  • I'm here because I saw this parodied on The Simpsons... beautiful song. Thanks for sharing!

  • She sang the song as if it was really happening to her. Really great!

  • Do those living in Argentina like this song ?

  • this is the version which will always be definitive for me

  • By far the best version ever.

  • I have heard many good versions but Julie's voice is so unique for this particular song. The power, message, expressions all put on display here. Thx for sharing....truly a remarkable song!!

  • Meh.

Not a fan of this version.

  • I AGREE THAT SHE SANG THE ONLY VERSION OF THE SONG THAT IS WORTH LISTENING TO,OF COURSE IT IS THE ONLY VERSION THAT HAS THE POWER TO MOVE ME.

  • Amazing - Always stops me dead in my tracks and sends shivers down my spine!!! Thankyou

  • This is the only version worth listerning to the rest are just rubbish full stop ...

  • i'm going to argentina again.

i know she thinks this video is "sad. she has her feelings

& i respect. but i don't resist to see it again & again.

hope she returns to live then she'll know i'm thinking of

her. how much i'd love to have with me now. only God

can to save her to me. nice to admire your video as always. A

PS ok, i know i have to go to connecticut to see this scenery.

  • @paduaprs: I am glad you enjoy this song and video so much. Yes, it is both sad and yet very beautiful. If you do come to Connecticut, you must visit Seaside Park to see where this video was made. I spend much of my time there all year round. I hope to see you there if you do visit the area....By the way, I have a disco version of this song sung by Festival. It is a happier sound and you can find it here on Youtube

  • @paduaprs my girl and i grew up with this song during the uks war with argentina....she cant have the babies i want her to have...she sent me this and im breaking....

  • @paduaprs It's really good. Thank you. IDK CT could be so beautifully filmed. Huzzas to you. The nutmeg state helped a bit.

  • @foucault1020 i thank you for your words.

art closes persons and peoples. hope you

have your reasons always to admire this

beautiful creation. argentina is a happening

to mind and heart. i love that country! antonio

  • @paduaprs This is beautiful, Thank you :) xxx

  • @Rider3322 i thank you, but she passed away yesterday, sunday, 1 am, january 22 in London. i know now she is with God. she is happy of course. she asked me don t cry and don t be sad. i ll try, i ll try.

  • love the see. love the sun. love this song.

  • I notice as I write that 19 people didn't like this song or version of this song. What is there not to like about it? Great song - so emotive andwhat a voice. Saw Evita with Madonna and she's good too, but not in the same suburb, let alone street, as Julie Covington.

  • @paulkate72 Just proves there are at least 19 idiots signed up to YouTube. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can beat Julie Covington's version of this song. I've loved it since the first time way back in the 70's and I often wonder what happened to her. 'Only Women Bleed' is another favourite, also by Julie, and I honestly believe she never got the recognition she so deserved.

  • @thebestofforum - Thanks for your remarks here. Yes, Julie's version is the No. 1. We share a like of similar music - at least in this instance we do. Best wishes.

  • She is departing or arriving ?

  • This version reminds me of my late Mother..I seem to dream about her as i get older..Sad and beautiful..Thanks

  • Her voice is deliberately off key. . . . Magnificent singing, conveying childlike innocence and enormous strength of character, the Iron Butterfly is exactly right.

Gwenyth Paltrow uses the same technique when she sings 'Bettle Davis Eyes' the film Crusin.

  • I think only Julie can sing this, some have done a good effort but this is the definitive version, I hope Julie is rich and and has a wonderful life, she has brought pleasure to millions with this. There is a clarity in her vioce others just cannot manage

  • thats a pleasure to hear this song again.

always when i return to argentina i

appreciate it. hope your video has

long live. becaus it presents too much

of that wonderful country. receive my

    cumpliments for your creation. A

  • @paduaprs Thank you. I hope that as you view this video that you imagine yourself returning to Argentina on the sailboat in the video. This is the most popular video that I have posted here. I am glad you and so many others have enjoyed it.

  • @DrinkingStar try and get rid of the sound of the wind which you recorded at the beginning of the vid.

  • @paduaprs Maravilhoso video, um pouco triste, dá mais saudades ainda.....

    beijos com carinho

  • Thank You for Posting! So Nice . .

  • I must admit this is the first time I have listened to this song all the way through. It's really beautiful.

  • will always be the 'best' version of this song... lovely posting beautiful pictures but i couldn t put them to-gether somehow...

  • This is the original and to me, always the best!

  • Patti was great, but Julie better.

  • i can remember her in rock follies in the 1970s

  • beautiful. beats the rest by a mile

  • I am Arabic man but i love Argentina

  • la meilleure version , sans l ombre d un doute !

  • Comment removed

  • CLASSIC!

  • Love this song so much,so beautiful.

  • julie covington is the best for this song by miles

  • @terry260957 Terry, correction, by several astronomical units...

  • Nice Video and what a song! Wow And Her voice is like an angel!

  • ARGENTINA OR DEAD!!!!!!!!

  • argentinia is only crying for germany ;)

  • I'M VERY VERY SORRY ABOUT 4 GOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL

  • @banglakakon i am not a fan of arg but it is a bigger pain in ass for Ger comming to semi final and losing... all the time.. ger always lose a big lose. and am sorrry for u nerd.

  • Dont cry for maradona Argetina lol

  • Julie Covington is still the everlasting icon for Evita Peron. That singing carries with it iron will of a strong person so reflective of Evita the person, the original iron butterfly. Up till now, I cannot find another equal to this version....

  • Her voice is to spotty and breaks up and she shouts in places.... must be a bad recording.

  • agree with everyone who says this is the best.. heard it before the live show years ago... and even today she captures the whole essence of the role

  • its the first and best

  • madana had a good v alomost as good as this on

  • Nobody else could hold a candle to Julie Covingtons 'Argentina' She put feeling into every song. It's a shame she didn't get the recognition she deserved

  • Nobody could hold a candle to Julie Covingtons version of 'Argentina' She put feeling into all of her songs. A very talented singer who, in my opinion, didn't get the recognition she deserved

  • Juli Covington is the best!

  • This is a beautiful song but if you look into Evita's Life, she and her husband turned into the things they fought to overthrow, tyrants. People were jailed or disappeared.

  • Julie Covington cried when she sang this at the Grammys.

  • jULIE cOVINGTON, THE ORIGINAL SINGER OF dON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA, AMMAZING VOICE

  • the best version

  • argentina te amo !!!

  • I am a Metallica fan, but I do love this song!

  • This song is dedicated to EVITA..for the good things she had given & shared to the most indigenous people of Argentina. What a very touchy 6 melancholic song is this but it´s very pleasing to more ears.Viva EVITA & Viva to you "Drinking Star" ! It doesn´t matter who sings this song..for the singer consoles any one of us !

  • This girl gives me goosebumps. I have been a fan since Rock Follies

  • Thanks for sharing! bit of a bubble going on ! Do you know she featured on jeff waynes war of the worlds as the wife of the vicar? ( phil lynott)

  • @fluxgenerator She played Beth the parsons wife and was brilliant on that too.

  • Iam a Great Follower of Led Zeppelin but when a song and a singer come's along as great as this did it just captures you, remember when David Essex tried to sing it should have been charged with murder then Madonna she was as much use a chocolate fireguard a long with the other idiots who tried.... But the one and only to sing this song to its true potential is the one and only Julie Covington xxx

  • Best ever version of this song

  • I agree, this is the best version of this song, sung with so much passion.

  • Best version... then LuPone

  • @VinnyGerstrokes ,

I don't think anyone could have created anymore stage presence than Patti LuPone. Patti comes the closest to Covington, an almost dead heat but Julie beat Patti out by a nose. I don't think Julie could have done as great a job acting as Patti. I love both singers' version of this song.

  • @DrinkingStar

love Lupone but Julie Covington IS a kick ass actress.

  • Thanks a lot Sarah, for sharing this amazing version of my favorite song.

Don't know why I am crying each time.

It is " SO BEAUTIFUL " that song !!

    5 ***** +++++

    Hug

    Catherine ♥♥

  • Julie Covington's wonderful version of this song was released in 1976 but the musical itself did not appear till 1978 in London's West End and 1979 on Broadway.

    Beautifully sung though.

  • music with depth and feeling and magic

pity it's thing of the past

  • I remember this song made me cry all the time when it was played on the radio. I was only 6 or 7 years old and didn't have a clue what the lyrics mend, but I found it such a beautiful, sad song.Nowadays I do understand the words...and yep...now I'm barely strong enough to hold my tears.

  • This recording is my favorite of the musical Evita. I love everything about it.

  • i de like to go to Argentina too

    I was invited several times

Buenos aires is a beatifull city and the have the (Assado) ahah half veal in the BBQ takes 5 or 6 hours to do but people say its wonderfull of course with a red wine.

Eva was a mistical person and apparently from that image as santa Evita she was a dictator.Anyways the Opera Rock Evita is a masterpiece and the assado must be good.

I just try once in the Argentinian cultural center in Montreal.

  • The original, and best, version.

  • lol this song made me want to go to Argentina

  • @105km This video was filmed entirely at the beach at Seaside Park in Bridgeport Connecticut,USA...so if you want to view this scenery you will be disappointed in going to Argentina

  • @DrinkingStar I think he referred to the audio ad not the image, however sailing the Rio de la Plata (or la Plata River / River Plate) off the Uruguayan coast (oppossite to Argentina's cost of this estuary) you can see a similar landscape. On the foto shown in wikipedia for "Estuary" that would be somewhere on the upper left part of the photo. Also perhaps going south to Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina, you might get something similar, or better, if its the whales' season.

  • What a paradox - a totally beautiful song, sung wonderfully ... and the real Evita was a fascist slag!

  • I agree that Julie Covington's is the best version. The album to Evita was released before the original London production was put on.Lloyd-Webber wanted Covington to play the role in the original production but she turned him down and Elaine Paige got the role.

  • Hi everyone ;D I love that song! I even have one video on my channel singing that song :) Please, take a look... if you want. Thank youu :) xx

  • I love the way you combined the sea with this song! Lovely!

  • if i were a lady... i'd be happy to sing like Julie Covington

  • There's a wonderful directness and simplicity to the singing in this version which gives meaning and potency to the words. This was recorded the year I was born but it's the first record I remember playing on my Gran's old gramophone. I have heard many versions since but there is something pure and special about this one. I loved it then and I love it now.

  • Julie Covington's, was the first and best version of this song, please note her other beautiful songs ie: only women bleed etc

  • Julie does a great job with that song too.

  • @DrinkingStar

I too love Julie Covington's version 'Don't cry for me Argentina.

Would to buy it on CD. Cannot find it anywere on CD. Do you know if it is on an album somewhere.

    Thanks £y

  • For sure much better from Julie in 1977 as i was 17 than the remake from Madonna 1995... What a difference of purety and class!

It has had a lot to me in 1977in a very special way, so pure English!

  • since WMG removed so much of it's music, I lost the most awesome version of this song. It was performed live by Laura Branigan and I have yet to hear one as good. This one is very close.

If anyone out there knows where I can find Laura B's version on wax, please let me know.

  • I love this song im only 17 but i love the old songs, no1 these days sing like this :( x

  • much better than madonna

  • she and elaine paige are the best

  • that song is WONDERFUL!!!! there aren't any words ..=)

i am here and i say you.... HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!!! from italy ^__^

    kiss

  • Thanks for posting this. Just added it to my 1977 playlist. I'm building playlist for each of the past 100 years for all of us to listen to and enjoy.

My channel lets you travel with music to any year in the past.

  • This is THE definitive version - everything else is a pale copy

  • The best version as for me ; Elaine & Leah..

Listen to all versions before you compare.

  • Thanks for posting this clip. The video complements the song perfectly without distracting from it.

  • I hope no one 'rakes you over the coals'. Taste is a matter of personal preference. Just because others don't agree with you, that does not make you wrong nor does it make them right. I think that most people like best the version of a song they 1st heard. I think that Madonna did a credible version, but I prefer Julie's version over the dozen or so different artists whom I've heard sing this song.

  • thanks for the post,Brilliant, what you said hit the nail on the head,Julie is the only singer to sing this song with such passion ,feeling and emotion, but as you stated there were other good singers. BUT NOT WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE.

  • @zomj Madonna?......are you NUTS!..... Elaine Paige and Lea Salonga make her look like a American idol reject....

  • Madonna - take a lesson on how to sing! I had the privilege to hear Julie sing this live in 1976, truly spellbinding 33 years on!!

  • i've never heard anybody sing this song better, julie plucks at your heart strings

  • Great song, lifeless, bland and boring video.

  • Art is in the eye of the beholder and everyone is entitled their opinion. You seem to be in the minority but that does negative the validity of how you feel about this video. You apparently have never seen or felt the power, the beauty and the tranquility of the sea and that of this song.

  • great song sung in proper english! still gives me goosepimples lol

  • Julie Covington has sung the original version of this song. It was her, who sang EVITA´s songs from the album that came out in the late 70´s. I remember I bought it and heard it endlessly - she has such a wonderful, nice, lovely and strong voice. Love it. Thanks for bringing back a lot of happy memories from a carefree period of my life. Thanks for sharing.

  • Elaine who?

  • goosebumps!

  • Hermosa melodia!

    Grande!

Vaya mi admiración y respetos a tan grande nación.

  • This is the original version - and by far the most superior - simply the best! I have always loved it since I heard it in 1976 - I think it was. Thanks for uploading it.

  • opa ):

  • this version was the original west end concept not broadway

  • this song is badass! Nuff Said...

  • is this the original version? fabulous

  • this is the best, the one and only Version....

  • Far & away the best version.

  • I love this version.....beautifull♥

  • Yip, I am of the same oppinion.

I own one of the first LP´s of Evita with

    Julie singing the main- part.

    This one is unbeaten.

  • No-one touches this version. Elaine Paige is fabe and Madonna wishes she had a voice like this!

  • How can any music lover not hear what a great version this is. No one comes remotely close to Julie.

  • Great tune but I must admit the best version of this tune I ve ever heard is by the late but great Karen Carpenter RIP

  • Definitely the definitive version....Fabulous!

  • Campanha: "Fica Maradona!"

  • This song belongs to Julie. I saw Elaine Paige in the original show & seen Madonna in the film a few times over, ...but sorry this IS THE ONLY version of this song.

  • Agree this was the first & best

  • By far the best version of this song. 929Hunter must be deaf

  • Absolutely LOVE this song! The play was

    amazing.

  • still fantastic..

  • great video better than that madonna shite what a disgrace her singing the song she has no right that whore

  • Great song, when i first heard this I thought it was the wrose song that I had heard but I was wrong.

  • my favorite version too - by far!!!!!!

  • your right great song thebest

  • This is the recorded original version I knew. Don't know if that's why I prefer Julie's to many, many others. By the way, listen to the all Evita.
