Like Mrjockos87, who doesn't know his A** from his elbow about music, I was a DJ in a club for 7 years, an oldies club we I played from the 50's to the 70's and I played alot of Holly, Roy , Eddie and of course Elvis, and I also DJ'd an oldies radio station the most requested artist was Elvis then Holly, Roy, and the Eddie, I said this once and I will say it again. I love all these 50's Rock icons but if it was not for Elvis the only true King, non of those other guys would have made it.
@kh4949 I think the only footage of Ritchie is from "Go Johnny Go!"...and when he sings, dialogue from Alan Freed and an actor interrupt the song ("Ooh My Head.") Oh well...
That French shit is a terrible version! Couldn't even wait 'til the end of it, I had to turn it off within the first minute. How dare ya comparing it to Cochran? Eddie's turnin' over from that cover!
Outstanding clip, outstanding artist. But if I were Eddie Cochran, it would have been all I could do to keep from chewing out the audience for clapping on the one and the three instead of the two and the four.
Cochran was good, cool, and I wish he'd have not died when he did. It's when people start putting him above Elvis where the abject stupidity comes in. On no level was he on Elvis' level. During his lifetime, he was nowhere near Elvis' level. Elvis had more hits while in the freaking Army than Eddie did while home performing. As Eddie's buddy Buddy said, "Without Elvis, none of us could have made it." And that's just the beginning of the quotes from every rocker of Elvis' era and after about him.
This is a great song, co-written by Eddie's girlfriend, Sharon Sheeley, and his older brother, Bob Cochran (she was in the car the night Eddie was killed but survived). The song was written by Sheeley on the back of a match book, and recorded with a drum beat identical to Little Richard's "Keep A-Knockin'", according to her, in order to impress Cochran who was a Little Richard fan.
Wow, he just oozed sex appeal. I can imagine all those girls going nuts over this guy. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what music would be like if performers such at Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Otis Reading were still alive. Rock N Roll Heaven, I think.
Eddie Cochran's song "Twenty Flight Rock" was what made John Lennon want Paul McCartney to join the beatles, then known as Johnny & the Moondogs, the Silver Beatles, then The Beatles.. Paul knew all the words to the tune & that impresses John & he thought this guy is even a better singer than me, do i want him in me band???, YES he'll make the band stronger, Then Paul brought in George who played "Raunchy" on the guitar and that was his pass into stardom...
@Mrjockos87 Can we please just enjoy the music without putting other performers down? And just for the record, Elvis never liked being called the king of rock n roll. But all of us are here to enjoy the music. Could you please just sit back and enjoy it without putting people down?
i just fucking love the way he sings and plays the guitar and flirts with the fans - i hope i could meet him just once! but too bad, it's impossible, a great man flied to heaven too early ♥
@vordman Are you British? "cocked hat?" "Mutt's Nuts!" I love the second one, but have never heard it before. I find the words and expressions that the British use wonderfully charming, as well as right to the point!
@bumblebeemoi yeah, I'm a limey! Sorry about the Brit slang. Just trying to say Cochran was irreplaceable and superior to Elvis because he had writing credits too.
@vordman No need to apologize! If we (what do you call us, "Yanks?") can't figure out what you say (I understand the point, I just had never heard those expressions), it's up to me to ask. However, tough to say "superior" since Elvis' range of styles was so broad. Good point about Eddie (like Buddy) writing his own stuff. We Yanks were pretty dense in not liking Eddie as much as the Brits. He was so cool in a subtle way and not "in your face" like Elvis could be. Plus, only 21 when he left us.
i love this song the gentle king billy furys birthday and the great eddie cochran passing away they were both somethin else to greats in heaven both missed never never never forgotten love and peace to all you rock and rollers xx
WHAT A GALLAS LOOKIN DUDE. Both artists wee mega huge in the UK bot not appreciated in U.S. till after their untimely deaths-WHY?
@MrSuperneil05 I think US have a tendency forgetting their music heritage. Have no explanation why. It took UK, France and Europe to get the blues men back into the exposure light in the early '60s. Eddie wasn't even more appreciated in US after his death. Have no no clue but US people tend to go for much of the Bobbies and sweet singing boy idols, not the real deal.
@bellgardens53 I have only recently found out about Eddie (and I'm 58!). I cannot grasp why he was not a smash hit in U.S. He certainly was in Europe. He did some Rockabilly and that genre was also big in Britain but not here. By the way, what do you mean by "Bobbies?" That has no meaning in the U.S. that I know of.
@bumblebeemoi Well, he had some million sellers in US and world wide. Me neither doesn't understand why Ed wasn't bigger in US. He was a very talented musician, an inventor in the studio, overdubbing etc. Very good at dms and bs too. Played all instruments on "Summertime Blues" and that 'Kingfish' voice was him too. Sure he did rock-a-billy but he emerged more into the dynaamic rockn'roll before passing away. Think it was JLL that said about anno 1960, when several of the real originators
@bellgardens53 contin...were gone, El in the army, Buddy and Ed dead, JLL's own career not that good after the so called scandal in UK a year or so before, Chuck maybe doing time, Penniman away from Rockn'Roll because of Christianity, etc. etc. Anway, Think JLL, said, about this time,"Bobby here, Bobby there, it was all these damn Bobbies everywhere", alluding to all these Bobby Rydell's, Vee kind of guys (Fabian etc.) aka bleak, tamed not that talented and boring "artists". Love these Dick clark show videos. The show was on Saturday nights in addition to bandstand.....please continue to post ANYTHING from the Dick Clark or Bandstand shows
A song about youthful dreams, hope, energy, hard work and success. One of rock's greatest songs by one of the all-time supremely talented artists. Oh, what might have been.
I wish! But it depends what you really are asking for. El went mainstream and Ed wouldn't have a chance in that competition field ( thank God!) BUT that is also the same as dying as a rocker. I think none could have compete in populatity vd El of any of the '50s o0riginators. But Eddie was a real rocker, an icon, a angelic punk, an awesome guitar picker, great performer....well, I don't know what would happen if he hadn't passed away that night in Chippenham
I think Eddie along with Buddy Holly would have gone onto producing and recording other artists if they would have lived. Eddie was very very good in the studio and as we know a great musician.
Think of the body of work he left at his young age
In his day Eddie was the hardest sound around - but he was so graceful on stage - an irresistable combination. I once spoke to a woman in a chip shop who had been out with him just days before he died... a timely choice.
I use to work with his nephew in Orange County,California. Of course he (eddie) died before he was born but he get's a lot of people wanting stories about him(Eddie). It is funny becouse my plot is at the same cementary Eddie is buried, Forest Lawn in Cypress,California...What a rocker, way ahead of his time..
Or still under another title? Could be that 'mon p'tit loup' was the French version of a Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band number : ' Betty Lou's gettin' out tonight'...Anyway, Johnny sang this number as well in French...
one of my fav all time songs. it's about doing what he has to do and succeeding at bettering himself (to make it simple) Eddie was the best, too bad he was taken from us so early in life...
In this song his references to class aren't about school. It makes no sense that he couldn't date a girl because she's not in his class at school. No, here class is meant as social class. She is above his class -- just like the expensive car and other dreams. But what we find by the end of the song is that somehow he overcame his "low class" and achieved his the girl, car, and dreams. Remember, these rockers -- including Elvis -- were seen as low class rebel rousers.
you also need to realize the time this was written; 'class' is a double entendre, children of the 50s in the US where the first to have some disposable income and therefore means to there own transportation. this is why the 50s in USA equals the 60s in UK, it's all about mobility and rebellion. everything you say is true, but this was the first generation to experience this.that's what the song is about. if you choose to not accept this 'deeper' meaning that's fine, but it's 85% of the song.
robotnik77, it seems you are under-analyzing. You haven't paid attention to the other 75% of the song. Yes, you can read the "older men" line as a highschool class, but Eddie isn't suffering from being a freshman. He doesn't have confidence to ask her out. And if you remember, he says the fancy convertible is "outta my class" too. The car's not in highschool. It's out of reach due to money... again, a class issue, noty highschool. This song is more complex than you give credit.
When he says "outta my class" I don't reckon it's a referance to school. It's just a theory but I reckon he means he's a bit short on self confidence having had a typical working class upbringing which means he is subject to the stigmas associated: Low wages, cheap housing, battered cars and short life expectancy. I'm pretty sure it's something that would be easy for large swathes of young America to identify with rather than "I hope I get good grades".
Man-Eddie had the swagger-with the Gretch guitar, did Elvis-- maybe, but Eddie was real and not messin around, damn he had it and left too early! Like Buddy, and Richie, and all of the good 50's rockers, at 52 i play guitar- and never looked back its in your blood or not, and it will never leave me, God picks us in a strange way, and i have to play it thru the end... Keep it movin! Cheers!
yes thats one of the coolest things about eddie. the way he swaggers with his guitar as you say and i´m also a HUGE fan of the left shoulder boppin or what you would call it :)..something that brian setzer also used to do, but not like Eddie!
Yea...Eddie shook his shoulder to the beat, a trick he'd chopped from Lefty Frizzell. Wonder when the vaults of Dick Clark will open up so we have a chance in our lifetime to see what's hiding there?
Ok...and how many were filmed? Just by memory right now, this one, 'Sittin' In the Balcony' and 'Cmon Everybody' ...what happened with the rest? Or weren't they filmed? Or are they gathering dust in Clark's warehouse?
all were filmed. There's also summertime Blues, Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie if i remember well another sittin' in the balcony sorry i've forget one. I think they are in the Clark's vaults. Not erased
I wanna see Eddie do "Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie" so much it hurts. What the heck is wrong with Dick? He's gonna be 80 Nov 30. For crying out loud; RELEASE THEM! Pronto! Let people like me and all others that love this music watch 'em before we get 80 yrs old. I don't wanna wake up dead in the middle of the night in Satans - yea I gonna go to Rockn'Roll heaven as it's the Devils music or considered it once - pitch black dungeon, realizing missed Clark's Eddie films. Is it about copy rights?
Eddie had it all ! He wrote his own tunes, could play, sing, and had the looks. Eddie was also great in the stuido imagine what he could have done if he lived?
ha ha i loved the way he pulled up his pants @1:53 what a showman..nobody moved with a guitar like eddie ....what a true artist....modern performers hold your heads in shame
Thanks so much for sharing. Very cool. Wish that there was more footage of Eddie and that it would be compiled onto DVD. I'll always love his music and wish he was still with us today.
Fantastic song, Eddie nailed the essence of Rock n' Roll perfectly. It's no surprise a generation later Punk ruffians like the Sex Pistols paid homage.
After all these years this track still has the power and the energy to make you want to get up and enjoy life. It makes a lot of today's music sound flat, tired and uninspired.
Check out all those bouffant hairdos and they are all chewing gum...so different than my generation, we had long hair and smoked joints Ahahahah!!!! Hey Dude you rock, really. Thanks YC for sending!!!
he's talking about economics. you'll notice the next verse he talks about a cadillac that he also cannot afford. social commentary and (still) one of the great riffs of all time,

Thanks, mate. Do you think he would have been a genuine competitor for Elvis Presley?
ellycat 2 years ago
I wish! But it depends what you really are asking for. El went mainstream and Ed wouldn't have a chance in that competition field ( thank God!) BUT that is also the same as dying as a rocker. I think none could have compete in populatity vd El of any of the '50s o0riginators. But Eddie was a real rocker, an icon, a angelic punk, an awesome guitar picker, great performer....well, I don't know what would happen if he hadn't passed away that night in Chippenham
gangerollo 2 years ago
I think Eddie along with Buddy Holly would have gone onto producing and recording other artists if they would have lived. Eddie was very very good in the studio and as we know a great musician.
Think of the body of work he left at his young age
a real shame he died so young

In his day Eddie was the hardest sound around - but he was so graceful on stage - an irresistable combination. I once spoke to a woman in a chip shop who had been out with him just days before he died... a timely choice.

I use to work with his nephew in Orange County,California. Of course he (eddie) died before he was born but he get's a lot of people wanting stories about him(Eddie). It is funny becouse my plot is at the same cementary Eddie is buried, Forest Lawn in Cypress,California...What a rocker, way ahead of his time..

Bobby Cochran, Eddie's nephew did know his uncle. He was 10 years old when he died, Bobby wrote a full book on Eddie with some personal stories, too

Or still under another title? Could be that 'mon p'tit loup' was the French version of a Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band number : ' Betty Lou's gettin' out tonight'...Anyway, Johnny sang this number as well in French...

Very well interpreted in French by Johnny Halliday! Ages ago... The song was called : ' Mon p'tit loup'...

one of my fav all time songs. it's about doing what he has to do and succeeding at bettering himself (to make it simple) Eddie was the best, too bad he was taken from us so early in life...

DarkstarStories 2 years ago
You're over-analyzing. She's dating OLDER
guys from out of his class. It's not his social class, except in a certain sense. Guys in the
higher classes, Junior, Senior, are more likely
to have jobs, cars, and money, to impress the girls with. He's probably a Freshman or Sophomore.
robotnik77 2 years ago
you also need to realize the time this was written; 'class' is a double entendre, children of the 50s in the US where the first to have some disposable income and therefore means to there own transportation. this is why the 50s in USA equals the 60s in UK, it's all about mobility and rebellion. everything you say is true, but this was the first generation to experience this.that's what the song is about. if you choose to not accept this 'deeper' meaning that's fine, but it's 85% of the song.
stangable1984 2 years ago
robotnik77, it seems you are under-analyzing.
DarkstarStories 2 years ago
When he says "outta my class" I don't reckon it's a referance to school. It's just a theory but I reckon he means he's a bit short on self confidence having had a typical working class upbringing which means he is subject to the stigmas associated: Low wages, cheap housing, battered cars and short life expectancy. I'm pretty sure it's something that would be easy for large swathes of young America to identify with rather than "I hope I get good grades".
Or not....
....maybe....

Cheers!
tootone10 3 years ago 4
yes thats one of the coolest things about eddie. the way he swaggers with his guitar as you say and i´m also a HUGE fan of the left shoulder boppin or what you would call it :)..something that brian setzer also used to do, but not like Eddie!
ECsweden 3 years ago 2
Yea...Eddie shook his shoulder to the beat, a trick he'd chopped from Lefty Frizzell. Wonder when the vaults of Dick Clark will open up so we have a chance in our lifetime to see what's hiding there?
gangerollo 2 years ago
eddie had made about 8 appareances at the American Banstand
eugenecraddock 2 years ago
Ok...and how many were filmed? Just by memory right now, this one, 'Sittin' In the Balcony' and 'Cmon Everybody' ...what happened with the rest? Or weren't they filmed? Or are they gathering dust in Clark's warehouse?
gangerollo 2 years ago 2
all were filmed. There's also summertime Blues, Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie if i remember well another sittin' in the balcony sorry i've forget one. I think they are in the Clark's vaults. Not erased
eugenecraddock 2 years ago

Fantastic song, Eddie nailed the essence of Rock n' Roll perfectly. It's no surprise a generation later Punk ruffians like the Sex Pistols paid homage.

After all these years this track still has the power and the energy to make you want to get up and enjoy life. It makes a lot of today's music sound flat, tired and uninspired.

I always thought Eddie meant a girl from another class in school....but there you see. Never too late to learn somethin' new aka somethin' else.
gangerollo 3 years ago
When he says "She goes with other guys from out of my class," does he mean his class at school or does he mean his economic class? Huh?
titostacos 3 years ago
he's talking about economics. you'll notice the next verse he talks about a cadillac that he also cannot afford. social commentary and (still) one of the great riffs of all time,
wow.
