The starting point of any economical reform must be the consideration of creating an Equality-based System. From this, giving and receiving within this principle becomes our way of living not only in an 'economical' way, but also as the basis of interactions which implies that the individual must be educated/ self-corrected through a process of becoming Self-Honest= consideration of what is best for all at all times as the starting point of living/ interacting and coexisting with every1 on Earth
Yes, zero interest money is much better than money with interest. But there is also a much better solution that is called an Equal Money System. Equal Money is based on equality of ALL living beings, not only humans but includes also animals and plant in the equation equally. This system will provide a dignified life for all, without need for competition. So please go to Google and YouTube, search for "Equal Money" or visit equalmoney(dot)org web site and support the system that is best for all.
The creation of not-for-profit member-owned banks is certainly a worthy idea.
At the same time, JAK bank and other similar institutions are focused on mitigation rather than solution to the cause of debt-dependency in societies. Equally or more critical is ending the privatization of location rental values. CLTs take some land out of the market to make housing affordable, but this is not enough. Societies must collect land rent to end land speculation and lower land costs significantly.

Islamic banking and economic system is the only viable alternative to the sickness of the global (western) financial debacle being played over the past century!
It's so important to open this conversation. We don't know how to live without interest & debt. In light of current economies, transitioning toward this model may benefit both ppl & the planet.
But what happens in this system for retirees? Perhaps a hybrid system. Reasonable interest rates could afford people their retirement via modest investment, but reduce the interest costs embedded in prices, allowing for savings or lower wages/less employment.
Don't US retires get pensions and SS? Why couldn't they fund the system the same way working people do? Many times they own their homes as well and no car payments usually, Why wouldn't it work?
I suppose some do. But pension plan funds are often invested in shady companies, or activities that I wouldn't want to support. Social security I believe would be just for folks on the lower income bracket, and some self employed folks don't use the public pension option but still need to invest for retirement.
cool point.
