EastEnders have to be commended for their portrayal of Colin and Barry's relationship in the 1980s. Dot's reaction was quite realistic of the time. If anyone has looked back on the headlines when this storyline was aired, homophobia was rife. Two men having a kiss on television was unheard of, and particularly the right wing gutter press had a field day. EastEnders helped change people's attitudes. Dot went on to become very close to Barry.
You can't get AIDS from saliva you dozy cow. It's always the AIDS thing isn't it. Barry's so cute though, and completely calm about it, I would have flipped.
I think this was an incredibly powerful scene. I'm glad they decided to do it, especially using Dot, seeing as she's one of Eastenders' most well-known characters. People do have this ignorant view apparently :/
About that Emmerdale boy being attacked - I think the attackers may have something to hide themselves, I mean how else would it bother them that much what two men or two women do together sexually.
Just saying, but when the description of the video says this is a 'hilarious clip' I'm hoping it doesn't mean Dot's homophobic remarks are the funny part. =S I'm probably reading into it too much but anyway.
It's a shame that views like Dot's are very much happening today still. It's a shame we have some small minded people in the world who have views similar to her.
@kittykat8905 What is even worse is that recently Danny Miller, who plays gay teenager Aaron in Emmerdale was physically attacked by two teenagers - for playing a gay teenager.
Not only does that say a lot about the way some people can't seperate fact from fiction, but a woman "Dot's" age, might have views like this because of upbringing, but that kids can be so predjudiced and revolting in 2010 is appalling. Will this country ever grow up?
I saw that on tv in hongkong more than 20 years ago and that was the first time I saw a gay relationship being portrayed on a tv programme, I didn't think I could ever see that again, youtube is amazing.
bloody hell, i knew dot was religious but that's a pretty extreme reaction... i doubt you'd hear people getting away with comments like "you might well both have AIDS" nowadays... shocking! still love Dot though, ironically she's a gay icon after all this...
Not really, I think it's just reflective of the times and Dot's sheltered existence! Do you remember when Mark got AIDS and everyone was washing their hands and cutlery extra thoroughly. People know better now.
Yeah, but give it up to British Soaps. They are so far ahead with same sex love than the US. We finally have a Same Sex Relationship with Noah & Luke on As The World Turns, and now on All My Children, Bianca has returned to Pine Valley with her new Girlfriend Reece and "their" new baby.

yeah this was broadcast in 1987,it was groundbreaking stuff as bbc "eastenders" was first programme to show a homosexual kiss before the watershed.
