  • daft old bat haha

  • this is not 1998.....i think its 1988!

  • I was only a baby when this aired, but was shocked when I looked up what the headlines said at the time!

Well done to EastEnders for not being afraid of the bigots! :-)

  • EastEnders have to be commended for their portrayal of Colin and Barry's relationship in the 1980s. Dot's reaction was quite realistic of the time. If anyone has looked back on the headlines when this storyline was aired, homophobia was rife. Two men having a kiss on television was unheard of, and particularly the right wing gutter press had a field day. EastEnders helped change people's attitudes. Dot went on to become very close to Barry.

  • how very ignorant of her. God's law - WTF

  • You can't get AIDS from saliva you dozy cow. It's always the AIDS thing isn't it. Barry's so cute though, and completely calm about it, I would have flipped.

  • Forgive Dot.. if shes wrong.

  • Awww he is so cute xx

  • I like how the shows always kept up with the times. "Dot" now couldn't give a monkeys about all that :)

  • I think this was an incredibly powerful scene. I'm glad they decided to do it, especially using Dot, seeing as she's one of Eastenders' most well-known characters. People do have this ignorant view apparently :/

About that Emmerdale boy being attacked - I think the attackers may have something to hide themselves, I mean how else would it bother them that much what two men or two women do together sexually.

Be gay if you want to be, it's totally fine! xxxx

  • OH DOT, YOU SO CRAZY!

  • Just saying, but when the description of the video says this is a 'hilarious clip' I'm hoping it doesn't mean Dot's homophobic remarks are the funny part. =S I'm probably reading into it too much but anyway.

It's a shame that views like Dot's are very much happening today still. It's a shame we have some small minded people in the world who have views similar to her.

  • @kittykat8905 What is even worse is that recently Danny Miller, who plays gay teenager Aaron in Emmerdale was physically attacked by two teenagers - for playing a gay teenager.

Not only does that say a lot about the way some people can't seperate fact from fiction, but a woman "Dot's" age, might have views like this because of upbringing, but that kids can be so predjudiced and revolting in 2010 is appalling. Will this country ever grow up?

  • This is not 1998. More like 1987.

  • @FrancisIdents this was june 1987

  • @GoldenLegends That was the month and year I was born, do you know the date it aired?

  • That's horrible! I hate people like that! It's such a shame that people are still like that

  • god's got something up his sleeve for lesbians

  • M Cashman is hot

  • yeah this was broadcast in 1987,it was groundbreaking stuff as bbc "eastenders" was first programme to show a homosexual kiss before the watershed.

im trying to find the actual kiss though so i can write about it in my dissertation

  • This is defo not 1998 id say more 1986. Colin and Barry were the groundbreaking gay lovers of early walford were in the square from 1985-88ish

  • @crevrath 1986-89 actually. And I think this was 1986 or 1987.

  • 2.47....."drank a coffee from your flask!" Might have AIDS!!, its like some comedy sketch!

  • Maybe Colin and Barry could come back to the square?

  • Maybe Colin and Barry could come back to the square?

  • that would be cool

  • This is actually from 1986.

  • oh, I say!

  • This looks really old for 1998, compared to certain things I've seen recently from then!

  • it wasnt this was in the late 80s

  • Then why does it say 1998 --->> there?

  • how do i know

  • I'm suggesting you're right & Youtube is wrong though, friend.

  • i can picture the sun newspapers headlines now..

( remove these perverts from eastenders they are scum)

  • I saw that on tv in hongkong more than 20 years ago and that was the first time I saw a gay relationship being portrayed on a tv programme, I didn't think I could ever see that again, youtube is amazing.

  • Ah bless dot!........this episode must be really oldway before I wasbut its funny lol

  • LOL.....love this scene...

  • XDDDDD "that means the only people guaranteed not to get it are lesbians!"

that's a good point and a hilarious line.

  • Not bad, but the funnier one is what follows next: "God's got something else up His sleeve for them!"

  • yeah, George Bush. He was almost as bad as AIDS.

  • lol bless ya dot,hey is that the same barry that marryed Janine?

  • Lol thats what I was wondering, can't be the same Barry :S

  • iv looked it up since watching it isnt lol

  • nah that was barry evans

  • omg THANK GOD PEOPLE ARENT AS IGNORANT AS THEY USED TO BE!!! its bad enough as it is now let alone in them days

  • Unfortunately many people still are that ignorant

  • very funny, wish there were a lot more 80's eastenders on here!

  • bloody hell, i knew dot was religious but that's a pretty extreme reaction... i doubt you'd hear people getting away with comments like "you might well both have AIDS" nowadays... shocking! still love Dot though, ironically she's a gay icon after all this...

  • Dot's voice is ssooo funny then she sounds like a chav then!

  • God, was Dot ever on time for work and how did she not ever get sacked. I think that she and Helen Stewart were always late for work.

  • oh dot, what have you done lol

  • DOT THE HOMOPHOBE

    Oh, yes, and Nazi

  • Yeah, well, I hate people like that. Religion sucks!

  • dot is a nazi

  • there was a big deal over that relationship, it was in the papers and everything which was pathetic.

  • Gary Hailes as I live and breathe!

  • LOL, oh Dot.

  • oh dear,,that was very homophobic:S

  • Not really, I think it's just reflective of the times and Dot's sheltered existence! Do you remember when Mark got AIDS and everyone was washing their hands and cutlery extra thoroughly. People know better now.

  • Yeah, but give it up to British Soaps. They are so far ahead with same sex love than the US. We finally have a Same Sex Relationship with Noah & Luke on As The World Turns, and now on All My Children, Bianca has returned to Pine Valley with her new Girlfriend Reece and "their" new baby.

  • how funny, look at barrys walkman attatched to his belt!!! i remember doing my paper round with mine!

  • I'm sure this was around late 1986 early 1987 episodes. Very early days

  • Gosh, Dot's voice was s different there. I'm glad she's become less militant against gays since then

  • Dots changed so much..

  • not worth a comment
