Same thing happened to my case knife! not exactly the same knife but same pattern and the backspring that is shared by the sheepsfoot and pen blade broke in the same place as yours. happened when i opened both blades halfway at the same time. its like the tension was too high when both blades open at the same time or something. Let me know if they repair or replace it so i can send mine in!

Did case replace it?
If you havnt even sent it to them yet, they may just replace the backspring if you ask them to.

I've never seen that kind of failure either. But I bet Case will take care of it for ya. I really like the way that patina came out though!
