apparently if you press forward right after you defeat her, you can save her from getting poisoned and she'll fight the next boss with you.....

You mean the Hoods? The ones that take Nina from the magic school? You have to go to the mountain south of Corsair with Katt after the magic school cutscene in Hometown. Then you gotta fight the Hood inside and go and kill Joker and stuff.
