Really, an example of an organic garden. A very inefficient example of an organic garden. The Garden Master's Organic Growing System will out produce the White House garden in 1/10th the space. The Garden Master dot com.
Okay we are acting like Mrs. Obama invented gardening here. Just because she decided to order a garden at the White House, which I thought was a step in the right direction, does not mean that she is the first woman who has tried to make healthy choices for her and her family. She ends with “The garden is really an important introduction to what I hope will be a new way that our country thinks about food...” Let’s not forget hard working farmers have been growing acres of produce for centuries.
Vegetable gardening is such an important part of our culture as Americans. Many people have lost the ability to take care of themselves. I commend the First Lady for her efforts to show other Americans the value of self sufficiency. I'm not even going to go into the economy but the cost of food is going through the roof!
I am not an American, but I support First Lady Michelle Obama and President Obama 100%. I think this is a great idea, Michelle. Hopefully, many Americans will learn from your example. It's good for people to grow as much of their own food as possible.
I have an organic vegetable garden in my backyard, plus strawberries and blackberries, which the kids love to gather.
I think kids really enjoy growing their own food. I did when I was a kid, and now my children enjoy this family tradition.

@watkins35146 My position is the Constitution, Freedom & Liberty with minimal government intervention into our lives...... Mrs. Obama represents the polar opposite of that and condones the use of force and coercion to achieve her political ideals, she is then immoral based on the use of force and coercion.
If I had a personal world class chef to feed me, my family, my colleagues and guests, you sure bet as hell I would have the world's healthiest diet. Oh, how I wish I were rich.
A garden paradise lifestyle solves world problems the employment lifestyle creates. It stops problems: pollution to air, land, water and food, disease, energy crisis, war immigration, and social welfare problems. It is the best security in all problems. We are going the wrong way.
Children learn how to take care of their families. Our schools keep them isolated from every-day wisdom of how to interact with our families and communities and how to care for plants and food giving pets.
UUUUHHHHH.........Michele,You might want to ask your husband about bill HR875 and S425 and tell him to shoot it down or else Monsanto will have you arrested for planting organic food.
And while your the first lady, why dont you try and save America from GMO's ....or should i say"the world"from GMO'S.MONSANTO must be stopped first.Theres your project, now run along.
I find it interesting that Sam Kass, previously the obamas personal chef before the election, was the chef representative for the garden and seemed to command attention, shoveling nutrients on while wearing his immaculate chef's coat. He's not even the executive chef, C. Commerford is. She's the small philipino chef who was briefly shown being instructed about salad washing by sam kass. :P Also in the recent iron chef show featuring commerford, at the garden harvest kass was nowhere. :P
shall encourage this idea.I also believe that it begins at home, I recall helping my father with our garden. He would say,"Marisela, run inside and grab me the salt shaker.. I ran happily for I knew we would be sitting on a pale eating fresh sweet tomatoes and corn.
A very good Idea. as a professional gardener my skills on techiques as a plantmans would help productivity of the garden. I think that are on something that is good for the peoople. the question is are the people listening

Wow. Hiring all those men, buying all that farm machinery, fertilizers, and hiring a personal chef only cost $180?
Why don't more people hire crews of workers (overseen by their personal chef) to garden in their own backyards? Perhaps everyone's personal floral arranger and stylist could chip in as well.
What a joke.
Trust me. People in this country are going to be planting their own gardens again. Although it's not going to be because they want to. It'll be that or starvation.
Does it not occur to you that the White House has always had an entire team of chefs, to prepare food for the President's meals and also for state dinners?
Does it not also occur to you that the White House also has a large staff of groundskeepers to maintain the lawn, the hedges, the fountains? Do you not appreciate the fact that the expense involved in keeping and maintaining a lush green lawn is significantly higher than maintaining a vegetable garden?
Of course I'm aware of such pathetic frivolous nonsense as the "entire team of chefs" that our modern kings have always enjoyed.
However, putting yourself out there as some kind of cutting-edge advocate of rugged self-reliance and home gardening as your serfs toil while you stand around in your designer clothes is an absurd example of pathological self-absorption .
If you can't see the epic fail here, there's really no hope.
You realize that the White House serves a government role as the site of state dinners for ambassadors and foreign leaders when they come to visit? The White House is not a palatial estate simply because the President is a "modern king." It's because it's vital for the image of the nation. Every nation on Earth has a palace or mansion at which supreme executive power is located.
She DID put some work into this garden, which is more than most First Ladies do on the property.
So should I assume you want our President to live in a small humble cottage, and not allow his wife to wear "designer clothes" that she buys on her own salary? You want to eliminate these class boundaries?
It's wonderful that Michelle has established a vegetable garden - a good example in health, nutrition, self-reliance, sustainable living. My town started a community garden this year and made 4'x8' plots available to residents. I got one and from late May through Oct. I've had a continuous supply of vegetables: radishes, lettuce, green beans, eggplant, scallions, rareripes, peppers, oregano, basil. Kale is growing now for the winter. It's amazing what a small plot of fertile soil will produce.
Perhaps if more people gardened, there'd be less gossip, strife and war going on in the world today. Even George Washington, our 1st U.S. president had a deep and abiding love for the earth as evidenced by this phrase found in a 1790 letter to a fellow garden enthusiast "I am led to reflect how much more delight to an undebauched mind is the task of making improvements on the Earth than all the vainglory which can be acquired by ravishing it."...and to that sentiment I say "amen!"
Wow...I knew Michelle was nice but, I never would have tought she would be that nice. To include children and make a garden for her family to be healthy and have fun togheter as a family! Wow. shes really nice with kids im a kid) lol
We started gardening at my house two years ago. We just carved out a section of the back yard. We're working on fixing up the soil with sand and compost to make it more hospitable, but it's amazing how much food you can get from a simple 4x10 plot. Spinach and beans are particularly high yield. Cherry tomatoes grow like weeds. The potatoes and carrots didn't do particularly well the first year, but they're looking much better this year. I'm glad to see the WH spearheading this effort!
Everyone in my family has a garden & I have learned so much from my Dad. His specialty is arugula. It's great just walking out in the backyard & picking your own vegetables fresh. I love spinach! I have a small spot in my backyard too, so I plant long pots of different varieties of lettuce, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes & they are on my deck . I like to let some go to seed too, so I can have my own seeds.
There's actually a little bit of lead in a lot of soil - there might even be some lead in the soil near your own home. The levels at the White House are around 93 ppm, which is well below the 400 ppm level the EPA considers dangerous. Furthermore, they adjusted the pH so that plants can't absorb the lead.
Thanks for responding, I heard this reported a month or so ago & nothing more after. I was so excited that the First Lady had taken an interest in a WH garden & included the children. Wonderful news!
im sure your another monkey that doesn't know anything about this country. it is sad to see mexicans and blacks and asians also taking over america :( im sure you black monkeys don't like the saffarie so you come here from affrica to get away from the lions and all of the animals, but we are human and you don't belong with humans you belong in africa!

This is so awesome. I think there's a growing food movement revolution afoot, which has the power & simplicity to unite us all - conservative or progressive. Its about re-regionalizing food systems, respecting workers at every level of production & distribution, and growing nutritiously & sustainably. I think we can feed the world this way...how about you?
It is so wonderful to see the First Lady growing her own garden at the white house, especially the inclusion of the children. So wonderful. I think Michelle Obama is bringing Grace, Dignity, and Poise back to the White House. I like that she is getting out there and trying to not only make sure her children eat healthy, but is encouraging others to do so as well. Right on!
Laura Bush had Grace, Dignity & Poise in the White House as well, so Michelle is not "Bringing ANYTHING Back". She's just doing what all first ladies are expected to do which is to "Honor" & "Respect" their role in the White House. And as for the "experiment" on the "Jazz " on hold, well, they heard from "We The People" & went back to good 'ol "Patriotic" music . GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!
This is a very inspiring video in terms of trying to get people into the mindset of growing their own produce rather than buying it from a huge supermarket chain. I congratulate Michelle Obama on her foresight and think she will be an excellent champion for improving the American diet and weaning people off fast food consumption.
Great job! I'm so relieved to see the Obamas in the White House encouraging children to eat their fruits and veggies and to sit down and eat as a Family; so important. Keep up the good work!
Great precedent set by our first lady. How about the White House set a goal to eat all its meals locally within a 100 mile radius. It is possible, we just need to be creative!
I saw this new one Dj, he is just incredible and gives everyday new hot house music mixes !! I think he will easily replace all those weak ass Dj (like David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Roger Sanchez, Martin Solveig) because he got mad skills!!
Go see on Google ANDREAS VAN MELDA on djpod podcast !!
Very nice, I would love to see the First Lady encourage personal gardens more to the general public. Maybe even some potted and jar gardens for apartment living. I just started growing strawberries in mayonise and pickle jars and putting them in window seals, these give berries all year round. Even though I have distanced myself from the party due to Van Jones and other extremist. This First Lady is remarkable!!
I live in the US and love this country, love the freedom, it is sad that Obama has surrounded himself with these types of people such as Van Jones scommunist, zero population, and others that would do as they would to us all. It is frankly scary. I pray that Obama will get all new people and remember what makes the people in the USA good and our country great! I pray that Michelle will continue to speak about family and be the first lady that we need and deserve.
Im an American. It's great to know that freedoms protected by the First Amendment don't apply to ppl that work in the White House. What makes this country great is that individuals have the power to allow their paranoia to influence the personnel office of the "highest office in the land". Van Jones personal philosophy and the views of any other "czars" in Obamas Administration have as much effect on our lives as the type of vegetables the First Lady decides to grow. Obama is the POTUS
I'd like to see the toxicology report on those "Perfect Tomatoe" that she'll undoubtedly grow (or "have grown") for the cameras. I'll bet the new "Green Job Czar" will not approve of the chemicals used to achieve the "perfect fruit" for the media cameras.
I have been a country boy since I was born. Today I live in town and still plant my own tomatoes. And, to this day it bewilders me to allow the people of the white house to have the ability to till up the yard of the White House, how dare those people tear the yard up.....
I really like to garden and am good at it. Have not been able to indulge in my hobby for a while due to working so many hours. I may tried to find time for gardening again. This is really the way to lead. By example which Mrs. Obama is doing.
Thanks for the memories - I had a Victory Garden when I lived in Boston - it was behind Fenway Park - the last of the original WWII gardens - I loved that experience and am glad you are making it possible for more Americans to appreciate growing things...

Dear Obamatrons, You're following a blind leader instead of researching the facts or outcome. If you believe in communism, marxism and racism then stand with the president but if you believe in freedom, liberty and the constitution then stand with the American people.
Please do not get involved with Obama, he has had a curse placed over his head that will cause harm and destruction to all those associated with him.

Germans followed hitler blindly to their own death and slaughter. Do not make the same mistake again. History is repeating it self and you're either a communist nazi or a sheep. If you do not educate yourself you will be placed under the Obama curse. This curse will be 100x strong then anything the kennedy family ever felt. I am warning you. Change your ways or this curse will ruin your life.
God secret service was probably getting ready to tackle the shit out of those kids if it seemed like they were gonna hit the first lady in the head with a shovel
DC public schools are almost all black. DC and the nearby MD and VA suburbs have some of the best PRIVATE schools in the country.
Sadly, DC public schools have some of the worst test scores in the nation. Without taking into account teacher salaries, per pupil spending is low in the District.
Public school enrollment has dropped and it seems only the dumb kids are left behind. So many DC kids qualify for summer school, that they may as well teach them year-round.
The garden cost under $200 and is an invaluable asset, as is our First Family.
I know it is hard to believe there is such a thing as a functional family with a social conscience, but the Obamas are certainly making the best example I've seen for a while.
I'd like to apologize for the people who chose hateful, illogical rhetoric over positive words and actions for themselves, their community and our country.
Well the labor is free. Most people can't truck in essentially clean soil and custom mix it. They do get nearly a full day of sun there, which is great.
The best lesson is letting the kids come to the kitchen with the produce and cook it up! That will last a livetime and be worth much more than the cost of the WH garden, I think.
Whoever is doing the Whitehouse channel videos of the Obamas needs to frame the president and first lady better and light the rooms well to get contrast with darker skin.
Where is the South Asian guy who was doing such awesome videos during the campaign?
What an excellent idea to grow food in your back yard. I hope people will consider this a good idea to get outside and find out where their food comes from and how different it is from factory produced food. Praise to Michelle and thanks to Michael Pollan and the Kitchen Garden campaign. Live your ideals (like your hair is on fire). What are you waiting for? You only get one chance. Did you have something better to do with your life?
this is awesome. my mom has a veggie garden very similar to this one and we eat out of it all the time! it's really cool to actually be able to eat what you grow yourself, and it really does cut down on costs. it's also a really good way to get everyone involved in the process of making a meal - whether it's watering, gathering food, cooking or whatever. i really commend the obamas, and i believe they are both doing great things for this country. there is more to the job than appointing people.
Americans need to avoid Hardees, Long John Silver, McDonalds, Tacobell for a while and you won't have to worry about the reform. I think you should also eat more carrots so you have better vision thus less accidents.
Oh my, Michelle Obama reminds me of Jackie Kennedy?? Michelle shows such grace and poise just like she did!! I would like to see our great President on here more often too!!
I love this video. The White House should make more videos like this. Learning more about the White House. Great Job! I also liked Letters to the President.
I see no reason for cynicism in this lovely video. This does feel like change I can believe in. Policy can come from many places. It's our obligation to be stake holders in the process. It's our duty to be an active part of our community. Cook meals for our families. Buy food that we believe in. Barack never said "he" was the change we've been waiting for. He said "WE" are the change we've been waiting for. Our obligation to change started the day we voted for him.
Good video, the time lapse really showed the progress being made. This effort sends a great message to the citizens young and old. Keep up the good work.

,I
shall encourage this idea.I also believe that it begins at home, I recall helping my father with our garden. He would say,"Marisela, run inside and grab me the salt shaker.. I ran happily for I knew we would be sitting on a pale eating fresh sweet tomatoes and corn.
Thank you for caring.

@aku
What does any of that have to do with anything?
Of course I'm aware of such pathetic frivolous nonsense as the "entire team of chefs" that our modern kings have always enjoyed.
However, putting yourself out there as some kind of cutting-edge advocate of rugged self-reliance and home gardening as your serfs toil while you stand around in your designer clothes is an absurd example of pathological self-absorption .
If you can't see the epic fail here, there's really no hope.
Come on.
hrosemd 2 years ago
@hrosemd
She DID put some work into this garden, which is more than most First Ladies do on the property.
akumakorgar 2 years ago 3
@hrosemd
So should I assume you want our President to live in a small humble cottage, and not allow his wife to wear "designer clothes" that she buys on her own salary? You want to eliminate these class boundaries?
What are you, some kind of Leninist?

It's wonderful that Michelle has established a vegetable garden - a good example in health, nutrition, self-reliance, sustainable living. My town started a community garden this year and made 4'x8' plots available to residents. I got one and from late May through Oct. I've had a continuous supply of vegetables: radishes, lettuce, green beans, eggplant, scallions, rareripes, peppers, oregano, basil. Kale is growing now for the winter. It's amazing what a small plot of fertile soil will produce.
richcartab 2 years ago
Perhaps if more people gardened, there'd be less gossip, strife and war going on in the world today. Even George Washington, our 1st U.S. president had a deep and abiding love for the earth as evidenced by this phrase found in a 1790 letter to a fellow garden enthusiast "I am led to reflect how much more delight to an undebauched mind is the task of making improvements on the Earth than all the vainglory which can be acquired by ravishing it."...and to that sentiment I say "amen!"

I'm glad to see the WH spearheading this effort!
gregkauf1987 2 years ago
Everyone in my family has a garden & I have learned so much from my Dad. His specialty is arugula. It's great just walking out in the backyard & picking your own vegetables fresh. I love spinach! I have a small spot in my backyard too, so I plant long pots of different varieties of lettuce, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes & they are on my deck . I like to let some go to seed too, so I can have my own seeds.

I heard on the news they found lead in the White House garden. Has anyone heard anything further about it?
CentrlFlagrl 2 years ago
There's actually a little bit of lead in a lot of soil - there might even be some lead in the soil near your own home. The levels at the White House are around 93 ppm, which is well below the 400 ppm level the EPA considers dangerous. Furthermore, they adjusted the pH so that plants can't absorb the lead.
