I watched this movie with my boyfriend and was so disturbed by it. But when I heard this song...I had no idea what the words were saying but I knew it was so sorrowful, it hurt me to listen to it. I searched for it all over the internet because I didn't know the name of the song. I love this song. It is the most emotional song I have ever heard, and I cry every time I hear it because the despair can be felt like a knife in your heart.
Beautiful song. Interesting movie. I don't regret watching the movie. And yes. I did watch it with my father, but we're two grown men and had a lil bit of a debate about the film at the conclusion. Lars VT rocks. Even if not everyone likes him.
funny how people comment and question the movie's purposes or ideas, and no one relates it to this music or its lyrics.
i don't have any basis to support this, but i really got the feeling that the movie is entirely based on the music's words. imo it's all about dealing with loss and pain and finding our way out that forest of grief.
@jonwings I think it has to do with the fact that his wife watched the child fall from the window knowing she could have stopped the event, the figures at the end of the movie represented the haunted women that had wronged themselves and others and were still blaming men for all their troubles...at least that is what I got out of the entire shebang..
@cinnful1 when she sees her child climb the table implies self guilt but not to be taken literally, in the opening scene there is no line of sight from where they are to the table. She does hideous things, but she's also the victim, he takes her away from treatment and medication to the place that she fears the most, and drives her crazy. The whole film is about how women are subdued to male culture and how they end up believing their impositions. google up "Visual theology of Lars Von Trier".
Correct, she knew that the child was waking up at nights so a deeper part of herself was really kind of watching the child climb up thus the self guilt.
@josecastromora best explanation of this film I've heard yet. I've heard nothing but the opposite from 'critics' and online movie reviewers, that Lars is a chauvinist living out his ideals in the film. Couldn't have been more wrong.
Beautiful and perfectly attuned to the emotion of aria. I only wish Tuva had not allowed herself to be assolciated with this film. A pity to Handel she did.
@zorka333336 I must agree. But I am not sure about the word "beautifull". Maybe powerfull or intensive could be the right word - the first scene totally messed my emotions. I had to stop watching for a few minutes. The combination of Handel godly music with an ultimate tragedy in this scene is simply perfect. The rest of the film is not bad, but only half as good as the leading scene.
I have to keep going back to that film, there are so many great sequences of just Willem Dafoe standing amidst snow falling or acorns and it is so beautiful.
@jpeopolis You don't have to regret for watching this chef-d'oeuvre along with your dad. This movie is the edge of art. And this movie is not a third rate smut.
@qiovanni i just think some scenes ahould be cut. thats the kind of film i like to watch, but i just cant watch this with these scenes. good movie , they shoulda make a PG14 , without those scenes where HE and SHE make love, masturbate, mutilate Her vagina.
@qiovanni i just think some scenes ahould be cut. thats the kind of film i like to watch, but i just cant watch this with these scenes. good movie , they shoulda make a PG14 , without those scenes where HE and SHE make love, masturbate, mutilate Her vagina.
@houston8ank If they did cut "those" scenes then the movie would not be as it is. What you are saying is the equivalent of: "I did not like the middle parts of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. He should have removed those parts and then I would love that piece of music."
One of the best openings to a film. Lars Von Trier is a genius, an artist, and an extreme visionary. Thank god Criterion took it on their hands to make an unforgettable experience of immense quality. This piece perfectly compliments the scene, and is as beautiful as the film itself. At least there are still a few directors out there that truly appreciate the art of film.
All i have to say is anyone who dislikes this film either cannot stomach it, or has absolutely no appreciation for cinema.
@randicj It's an inverse of the Adam and Eve creation story. It is primarily starring one male and one female, you only see their faces in the entire movie. It's funny the woods where they stay is called Eden because in God's Eden, everything is beautiful and made out of God's divinity, and in this Eden it shows a much more evil side to nature. Like Eve who was seduced by the snake, the woman is seduced by the idea that women are evil and she internalizes it. A fantastic film, was beautiful
@doctord185 Do you really think I am prepared to have dinner with the devil himself?!? But I am definitely going to see that movie... when I am in the mood...
@Incizor1 It's a mood piece about inner despair. If you look past the four torture parts, you'll find a eerily beautiful, and completely logically insane movie.

@Sjuske4ever in the afterlife he will be happy, and i dont inted to start chaos of religious terror but even if you are atheist or not there is an afterlife, although the existance of life is a highly overrated phenomenon, it is inevitable
@enginetai if you say so....then it MUST be true. the tragedy here is that this is all there is and if you are literally and/or figuratively screwed over, then that's that. don't tell someone who's getting chopped up with a machete or burned alive that "there's an afterlife". Again, if YOU say so, then it must be true. Religion is a blindfold for those too frightened by reality to look it straight in it's gutwrenching face.
my friends mom works with this guy and. so when my friend turned 18 years old we was having a party in this huge place itch wen lalter founded out was lars von triers office
this movie is an absolute cult !!! everything is perfect, plus, u dont really understand the message of the movie, it is good to reconcile that there was not one... but I enjoyed it, and still enjoy, Antichrist is in my blood...
well, i don´t think there is a completely and utterly clear and unique interpretation, as you say it. or can you say for yourself, that you met van Trier and he told you everything he intended...?

kadane how can you be happy at your funeral. when this song is played at your funeral, you´ll be dead...
Sjuske4ever 1 year ago

When the fox said it I was stunned - it is probably the most original thing I have ever seen in a movie -

beautiful music. the prologue was beautiful and the scenes in the forest, even the end, but the movie is graphically disturbing.

Leave me to weep over my cruel fate
And let me sigh for liberty
May sorrow break the bonds of my anguish
If only for pity's sake

The film and also the music choice is great! It's a very very personal film, only those who are like the artist will understand the meaning behind.

well, i don´t think there is a completely and utterly clear and unique interpretation, as you say it. or can you say for yourself, that you met van Trier and he told you everything he intended...?

if you actaully read the satanic bible , you'll know that satanism is centered around nature. it is the impersonal dark force of nature.
