If you take on a young wild animal, you become resposable for it. If you release it back into the wild, 90% of the time it wont make it. Thats cruel. And its your fault. Is it fair on a creature you have tamed, and made dependant on you?
@SvenTviking ok, next time I rescue an animal from the wild, I will keep it forever with me and not release it to do its natural life, that's what you want me to do, don't you, asshole?
@vagoperezoso The person you replied to was referring to /young/ wild animals. They become dependent on you as a "mother figure" and don't learn the necessary skills they need to survive. If you release them into the wild, over 90% of the time they will have absolutely no clue where to start life and will die off quick, dependent on species.
AMAZING, that you would just toss away such a gem of a creature! I cant fathom how you could do it!! Its like throwing away a winning Lottery ticket or flushing a gold brick?! The authorities would have to have me at gunpoint, anything less, HELL NO!!!
It's too bad you released him. She looks like he was really enjoying her life. Most people think that animals out in the wild live a life of sugar drops and cupcakes. They honestly don't have a clue. Expecially if the animal was raised by humans and not taught how to hunt or survive. I'm not trying to raz you for releasing her. You had to do what you had to do. I'm just annoyed at people cursing you because of their misconceptions.
I know... I owned minks& ferrets myself. Wild animals live fearful short unforgiving lives out in the wild, destined to become aprt of the food chain. IF ANY OF YOU EVER HAVE A WILD PET-NEVER RELEASE IT IN THE WILD! THEY WILL DIE MISERABLE AGONIZING DEATHS OUT THERE; TRUST ME, I KNOW...a more humane solution is to try and find it a new home-either a wildlife sanctuary or someone committed to taking care of it... Or put it to death yourself,if you can't keep it;-it is far better than releasing it
yes, exactly what I said. it had to be born in the wild and learn how to hunt, after that u can keep it in your house, but when you'll gonna let him go, he will still manage to survive
There is a stoat or weasel living under our shed. Im not sure which one but i ahv a shih tzu who is kinda small and ive seen stoats attack rabitts. Is my shih tzu at risk. I really dont wanna hav to kill the poor little thing. I seen it yesterdayAt first we thought it was a rat buit it definately isnt.
Sure is cute! I would KILL to own it!! I am trying to get a close cousin;the American Long-tailed weasel(Mustela frenata)but when I saw one in the woods the other day(it had run a squirrel up a tree)it scared me to death!!!Damn was it big!!!!Almost as big as a mink!!!!!If I tried to capture it-it would surely EAT ME ALIVE!!!!!!
That stoat seem cool do you still own it? Cause if you released it I hope that poor little stoat dosnt fall prey to a coyote, wolf, fox or badger. Like I saw a coyote killed and eat a stoat in my yard the other day.
All of you guys are full of crap!-Especially you ferretfanatics. I have had pet minks and they couldn't do without each other. And as for the smell-I'm not gonna sacrifice my nose just because of you "wildlife experts- do-gooders!" But I do agree that your pet stoat expired as soon as you released it-He was to "Humanized"...
I wasn't directing the comments to you per se'It's just that all of these "animal rights" hypocrits are starting to get on my nerves! When in reality, they envy you the entire time-while preaching against you!Only my last sentence was directed toward you;In essence, I was trying to defend you, dude.
Great that you rescued this little stoat, but if it should ever happen again it is best to contact a rehabber who has experience with these types of carnivores. It will give it a better chance of survival in the wild. A good rehabber will help it acclimate to the wild before releasing it.
Dear cobster45; Yes, stoats stink, but that's their survival tool. You could have had it descented& neutered to curb its temperament. You could have kept it quietly-to yourself...i had the same problem with my minks, but I HAD to have them descented& neutered for my own nose-sake!!!Your stoat may not have had a happy ending upon its release, especially as it had become too tame& acclimated to humans...
hell, i didnt mind the smell, i was just commenting. It only really stank when we hovered cause it scared it so much.
I know it probably didnt have a happy ending but it was better than leaving it to die, mother forgot it, we gave her a chance to come back but after 2 hours when we came back to check it was still left blind and cold in the rain. Plus they have very strong instincts, we may have made it too used to humans but it knew how to hunt.
That's just cruel to have them descented. It's their way of communicating. In the Netherlands it's even illegal to have a ferret descented unless there is a legitimate medical reason. If you can't respect animals how they are ... don't keep them.
As for neutering, if you keep them as "pets" it should be done. Mink are solitary animals.
Well we found it where my mum works, it was caught in some brambles, we think the mother missed it when she was moving them all because it still had its eyes closed. So we left it for a bit but the mother didnt come back. So we nursed it back to health and released it :)
someone told me i had to have a license to get a stoat.... do you?

@unbrokenjack GREAT! which means i can keep it until its death
seriously, haven't you thought that this is maybe the best way to recover populations from threatened animals? breeding them safely in our houses.
vagoperezoso 2 months ago
@vagoperezoso Who the hell said stoats were a threatened species? O.o I'm informed that their population is doing fine.

Is that noise in the background another animal like a bird or is it a skweeky toy?
I know stoats kinda act this way, but nevertheless, it seems to be making it go crazy.
My ferret used to go nuts when I'd get out the skweeky toy.

No coyotes or wolfs around where I live though it's very likely a fox got it. Such is life though at least we gave it a chance.

Thankyou for the advice, though the stoat has already been released. We did give it some eggs but the staple of its diet was unfortunately pet food.
Im not sure of how legal it is over here, but we didnt really keep it as a pet, just to rear it. So hopefully its ok.
And thankyou for the comment :)
cobster45 4 years ago
Cool pet! What did you feed it?
BadlndsBob 5 years ago 2
Mainly cat food mixed with water, just a small amount when it was young then dry with no water and a seperate water bowl when she was older.

is it difficult to catch? how did you rescue it? its very cute :)

Well we found it where my mum works, it was caught in some brambles, we think the mother missed it when she was moving them all because it still had its eyes closed. So we left it for a bit but the mother didnt come back. So we nursed it back to health and released it :)
