@MasterRmt You could easily set this up to a timer (eg a dispensor pressure plate 5 mimute timer) but for the video it was better to use buttons I imagine.)
Anyone know if the till preserve method works in SMP servers? Nevermind, I'll retest now that I know it needs to be x axis.
@BrowsOfSteel You should wire the harvester to a pressure plate. Standing on the plate will (with pulse limiter) activate the harvest process... delay for items to reach collection zone, and then reset soil for more melons. Then the only possable improvement would be to have it auto harvest as melons grow IF the plate is depressed.
If you do the detected auto harvest, you should move the detection plate back one so melons cant land on it. I'll make the ultimate melon farm if the till system works on SMP, otherwise I'll leave it to someone else. I dont make single player farm systems.
@BrowsOfSteel Thanks for the design, it's really great!
A few things need fixing in your next video though.
1. Glowstone is no longer conductive (mensch) but i belive Jack-o-Lanterns are.
2. You can no longer collect ice (mensch again) but you could use signs (or open fence gates etc.) to drop them down to a collection level before the machine resets instead.
Can you update the video's description/annotations to say that in 1.9pre5 and later (including the full release of minecraft, 1.0.0), that 1 slice from 1 melon bug is fixed?
@SokarEntertainment@BrowsOfSteel The glitch with crops growing under Gladstone is probably due to glowstone, dispute the name, being partially classed as a glass. Therefore allowing crisp to grow beneath it.
This is amazing, I had no idea you could make a farm that doesn't require tilling, would be great if you made a tutorial. Does this automatically harvest with a bud switch? If so it would be good if you could show one that uses a timer or other input instead too.
The harvesting is button‐activated. Melons grow slowly enough that it doesn’t make much sense to harvest them and let their drops despawn. Automatic harvesting would only make sense if you planned on idling at the collection point for a few hours.
Melons grow slowly and randomly, so I recommend just harvesting them whenever it’s convenient. There’s no downside to hitting the harvest button early.
That are some nice improvements :). I honestly didn't think about making the BUD switch vertical.
One minor remark: I would build the delay between harvesting and reseting at a central point and run 2 seperate wires. I think that would be a bit cheaper than using like 15 repeaters in every module.
It makes it cheaper, but a tad less compact, because there has to be two runs of wire and those 15‐ish (I don’t even remember the exact number; I used more than necessary) repeaters have to be fitted somewhere outside instead of being entirely contained within the confines of the device.
I thought that running separate wires would make them stack better vertically, but it was a no‐go—the power for the soil‐lifting‐piston ends up powering the BUD piston below from two blocks away.
Nice rewiring indeed! We actually have something similar aswell, we finished several new designs today, which we were gonna show in an update video. You gotta move the glowstone up one block tho, otherwise the stem won't grow a melon.
Keep an eye out for our update video. If you could make this with the last one we made, can't wait to see what you do with our next design :)
I noticed the “no opaque blocks above the stem” requirement, but melons (and pumpkins) do indeed grow like that. It might be an anomaly specific to glowstone.
you should make an escalator

Also glowstone doesn't conduct Redstone anymore and I'm guessing that its only purpose was light source

Just wondering, do melons and pumkins always drop when the ground below them is removed or did you use something else to make then drop?

@bbruinenberg Melons and pumpkins drop when they are moved by a piston.
