Im a 14 year old from ny that loves aviation and tissue paper isnt cutting it. Where can i get this stuff or better instructions on making micro film please. Also how is the prop made? right now im using guillows props and tissue paper its ok but not great, thanks!
@zjwflippers Hi zjwflippers. Tissue paper and Guillows props is a great place to start, but there's a lot more fun waiting for you. I can't seem to include websites in this reply, so try googling "indoor free flight" and "F1D". If you live near Lakehurst, NJ you are next to one of the world's best Indoor FF sites - search for ECIM (East Coast Indoor Modelers)
Cling wrap is *WAY* too heavy. The covering we now use is a .5 micron thick polyester film that is used in the electronics industry for capacitors. It comes on a roll like cling wrap, but 25' of it barely creates a bump. Microfilm was fun, but the new covering is a log more durable. Also, we want it to be slack. Shrinking it would twist the delicate airframe into a pretzel.
@natna25 The answer is to make the plane light. People think I'm screwing with them when I say that, but think about it: it's easy to make the prop turn more slowly - just use a thinner rubber band. The real trick is to make the prop turn slowly...and have the plane still fly!
@natna25 Hey I've made some of these and the best way is to make the prop really large. Because of the large amount of air they have to push it causes it to move slower. Mine has a radius of like a foot, so it seems really large for the plane. Hope this helps!
actually, it's more fun than that - Microfilm (as they call it) is made by pouring an amount of "airplane dope" (for all intents a laquer clear paint) on a tub of water, and using it's tackiness and self shrink tendency to have it pull tight - the film is about as thick as a soap bubble
Umm ok

Actually, the covering is called microfilm. It's made by pouring a liquid solution onto layer of water. The solution floats and eventually cures.

one questio, how do you put the PVC (plastic membrane) to the wings? i'm trying to do it but i cant get it, is there a technique?
bandinopla 2 years ago
its not regular cling wrap. they use a special covering that shrinks when u heat it
