Casting Director #1: So the first part of the movie takes place in Spain, right? So why don’t we hire an entirely British and American cast to play the Spaniards?

Casting Director #1: Great. And then, when the Spaniards arrive on El Dorado, a place specifically stated to be far away from Spain, then we’ll bring in the Spanish actors!!

@TheNerdyCanuck Well el Dorado is depicted as being an ancient Mexican city  so bringing in Spanish actor for that part of the movie isn't a terrible idea. Granted it would make more sense to have them played by Mexican actors but I've heard of worse casting decisions.

When you think of Spanish-speaking people, you usually think darker hair, skin, and eyes, right? That's because when the Spanish took over countries, they mingled with the natives, and later with slaves. Genetics say that dark features are dominant over lighter ones.

So yeah, theres the historical/scientific explanation that you didn't ask for, and probably didn't want. Sorry.

@KaterinaJade Except that Spain is in SOUTHERN Europe, where most people have olive/tan skin and darker features (Look at all the background characters in Spain in this movie, such as the soldiers or sailors). I myself an a Spaniard, and I am not white, thank you. It had nothing to do with the "Natives", by the way, because Roman-era paintings clearly show Spaniards with the features everyone thinks of as "Latino".

I'll never understand why in movies that are supposed to take place in foreign countries, there's always one or two guys that actually have an accent but nobody else does. Nobody having an accent would make sense, because they're supposed to be speaking their native language all the time, but then someone else actually having an accent screws the effect all up.
