When Justices retire, they usually wait until their favored party is in power. Souter surprised a lot of people and during his tenure, he became more liberal. @britethorn I've been exhausted by the genitals and politics connection for decades -- she's an unmarried, middle aged woman -- will we ask her if she's a virgin, how often does she masturbate, has she ever gotten a yeast infection after wearing tight jeans ... surely these things would affect her ability to interpret the Constitution for us, so we have a right to know ...

@liz1060 Personally, I think it would do the Court and the country a world of good if there were a gay or lesbian Justice in the room when they are debating some of the questions they'll be facing in the coming years.

My hunch is the Republicans will oppose her for her politics and the Democrats will cry "Are you trying to say she's gay?? So what if she's gay?? you don't like her because she's gay!!"

@yahazif The problem with that is that she was approved by the Senate for confirmation as US Solicitor General with a hefty majority that included around 15 Republicans. So now they'd have to come out and explain why they voted against her -- which would be especially difficult since she's never been on the bench and so has no written opinions from the bench for them to disagree with.

She's a New Yorker -- like Sotomayor. She's Jewish -- like Ginsburg. She's Harvard educated (also Chicago Law) - like Obama. Etc., etc., etc., I'm sure, but don't want to do the GOPs work for them.
