The Chilean model is FAR superior to social security. It is private and therefore will NEVER bankrupt the country. If the fund owner dies, his family gets the remainder of the money (try that with the social security ponzi scheme). The Chilean people on average have invested HALF what Americans put into social security and gotten back DOUBLE what social security recipients get. Legislation was just introduced in the Senate to make it solvent forever. It's called the "Keeping Our Social Security Promises Act." Right now the payroll tax only applies to incomes up to $106,800. This bill applies the tax to incomes over $250,000. Those are FACTS

I am unemployed right now thru no fault of my own. Thank You FDR for recognizing that sometimes people will need assistance. Most work has gone overseas. Many people I know have died well before reaching social security age, so perhaps that is a bit overblown? Yet others remain near vegtables in the assisted living homes. Then the spouses' loved one divorces them to save their home. Otherwise it will be taken. But someones got to pay I guess. Fact of life. Hope I die before I get old. The Who.
The age for retirement shouldn't be raised but those recieving social security should be required to do 10 hours of community work every month to help reduce government costs in other areas. If you don't do the work you can't collect social security. If you are physically and mentally capable, all you would have to do is volunteer in some part of the community. ex. The Chilean model is FAR superior to social security. It is private and therefore will NEVER bankrupt the country. If the fund owner dies, his family gets the remainder of the money (try that with the social security ponzi scheme). The Chilean people on average have invested HALF what Americans put into social security and gotten back DOUBLE what social security recipients get. Once, again, the surplus contains only intragovernmental bonds. The surplus numbers are not actual assets that can be used to pay benefits. Failing to reimburse those IOUs have no effect on the credit rating of the USA. These bonds can be erased from the books and no repercussions would happen. That's reality, you deluded fool.

@noleknight9399 No. You need to look up the facts. CBO numbers show it has $2.5 TRILLION surplus and can pay out 100% of benefits until the year 2038. After that it can pay out 80% of benefits. Legislation was just introduced in the Senate to make it solvent forever. It's called the "Keeping Our Social Security Promises Act." Right now the payroll tax only applies to incomes up to $106,800. This bill applies the tax to incomes over $250,000. Those are FACTS

I am unemployed right now thru no fault of my own. Thank You FDR for recognizing that sometimes people will need assistance. Most work has gone overseas. Many people I know have died well before reaching social security age, so perhaps that is a bit overblown? Yet others remain near vegtables in the assisted living homes. Then the spouses' loved one divorces them to save their home. Otherwise it will be taken. But someones got to pay I guess. Fact of life. Hope I die before I get old. The Who.

The age for retirement shouldn't be raised but those recieving social security should be required to do 10 hours of community work every month to help reduce government costs in other areas. If you don't do the work you can't collect social security. If you are physically and mentally capable, all you would have to do is volunteer in some part of the community. ex. Being a teachers assistant, tutoring, humane society, hospice, mentoring, helping with taxes, crossing guard, etc.

Democrats started Social Security and claimed participation in the program would be completely voluntary. Democrats then made it a non voluntary program. Democrats said participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual income into the Program. Democrats changed that to 7.65% on the first $90,000.

Democrats said the money that participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' would not be mixed into the general operating fund. Democrats moved the social security money into the general operating fund and the money was spent.

It is not “invested” over the life of your working but rather all the people paying into the system NOW pay for those IOU’s to the people who are retired NOW. @pachor2 it's not a fraud- just a flawed policy. gotta raise the retirement age to keep it going. when SS was adopted, the average life expectancy in the US was right around 60, now it's pushing 80 with an aging workforce. SS would payout indefinitely were it not for medical technology. great planning, FDR. should've checked the actuarial tables/ demographic projections. i'll take my own money and plan my own retirement, thank you.
