Warren was as good live as on a recording. A great sense of humor. A brilliant mind. Warren had an IQ of 160. He never reached a Lennon or McCartney status because his songs were complex, poignant, and over the heads of most people. Except for his Zevonites who were faithful until his death. He left a legacy behind that will never be matched.
@johnthehulk1 You are so right. One of WZ's pals said that Warren once told him that he, Warren, had "the highest IQ ever recorded in Fresno, for what that's worth."
There are two types of people in this world: those who don't understand Warren Zevon's music, and those who do. I 'll leave it to the pubic to figure out which group has more "genius"...
I only discovered his music just before he passed away, my mistake, a superb songwriter and artist, I don't think he got the international recognition he so richly deserved.
@DoowahDiatribe i remember seeing Bob Dylan perform this song in St. Paul MN back in 02.... even before Warren died. That tells you that Dylan held him in high esteem
If I was going to have a funeral, this would be played at it, but since I couldn't give a s**t what happens to this carcass after I'm done with it, I'll just enjoy it while I'm still here!
Did anyone notice right around 2:23 when zevon speeds up a bit and the percussionist has to wait a half beat or so to get back in time? Just at that moment the camera switches back to the close up on his face and catches him smiling at the mistake. you can really tell he just loves playing the music. wow.
It occurs to me how long it's been. There could be people listening to this who wouldn't even really understand the punch of that opening line to Lawyers, Guns, and Money. 'I went home with the waitress, the way I always do. How was I to know she was with the Russians too?' All teenagers today were born post-Cold War.
@briteness i was born days before the Berlin wall came down. That doesn't mean I don't understand what the lyrics mean. That is why music is here, it is story-telling, just like the rest of history. That is how we as a society and culture learn and grow. I may not have lived it but my parents and teachers have passed that knowledge down to me so that I MAY and CAN understand what happened and what it was all about.
@briteness Don't be so ignorant to say that we can't understand things because we didn't directly experience them. It is the same today. I could say that you old people can't understand modern technology like ipod touches and droids. A lot of older folks don't understand it, not because they can't but because they won't.
@briteness All you need is a language to communicate (ie music or english or whatever you can comprehend) and the willingness to learn and the ability to empathize and grow (which as humans we all have) and you can understand any concept event action theory word etc etc. that you want or need to. I bet that I as a 27yr old individual understand more about the cold war: the events, the implications the actions the consequences etc, than the majority of people that lived through it do.
@dixhix I certainly did not mean that there are no younger people who remember anything about history, although many do not. My example was ill-chosen. I don't know anything about my great-parents. But I do know a good deal about, say, Thomas Jefferson. Transmission is possible. And I have no doubt you know more about the Cold War than most who lived through it. My main thought was just that it has been a long time. For a poorly chosen illustration, I give you the victory in the internet battle.
zevon and a few more-jt, jackson browne david lindley-never sold out to that product producing studio enhanced out the wazoo trash --the kid rock hacks of the world- one of a kind.
@billcbren Hey now, I love Warren, and I like Metallica, as well as The Stones, Floyd, PPL, The Band and several, several other greats. Don't ever use the names Warren Zevon or Metallica in the same conversation as Jay-Z ever again, unless it's to say that Jay-Z isn't fit to gargle Zevon's bollocks, or something along that line...
@billcbren I haven't even looked for the posts yet...but are you telling me there are some feculent, sub-human poo biters who don't like the Z Man? Strange world we live in.....oh, BTW, fuck em....
@billcbren haha I laughed at that comment because Metallica and Warren Zevon are my two favorite musicians. Don't bunch in Metallica with some useless pop hacks. They do have talent.
Can't get enough Zevon lately-- revisiting my misspent youth--too bad LG&M was cut off at the end of this clip-- it was a great live performance of it--always a treat when someone can sound great without studio help and minimal stage musicians

56 is young? As a musician able to get a record company to release his albums, he was probably near the end of the line anyway ... in fact, in a way, as far as his legacy is concerned, he timed his death perfectly
I know, it just sounded funny. I actually agree with you.. I read Danny Goldberg's book just for the Zevon section and he goes into pretty great detail about the fact that there was virtually no interest in releasing his albums.. he talks about going to VH1 and trying to explain that warren had a perfect behind the music story.. apparently the executive response was "you know how I know know no one gives a shit about him? I don't."
Then sure enough, VH1 comes around with "The wind"..
Obviously you haven't heard of the notion that true artists ripen with age and continue doing great work into their later years. The recording industry doesn't even represent a modicum of what art is supposed to be; how can an industry that promotes the youthful deaths of its clients actually have any credibility? And yes, 56 is young. I sure hope it is -- that means I only have 22 yrs to go, thank you very much!
We like Zevon. But your taping/downloading sucks.

LMAO--the promoted video at the top is Disney's Lemonade Mouth. I'm sure Warren would appreciate the irony of him and Disney.

On the tribute album after Warren's death many stars picked one of his songs to sing on the CD. Bob Dylan picked this song...do you wonder why?

@briteness -- and now-a-days I read Pravda in english to read about White Man on a hill.
The cold war was a cynical farce. It failed.
Now we have a sucessful killing war, on terror. What ever became of borders anyhow?
