  • He should stick to playing Jesus.

  • it doesn`t matter how often I listen to Drews Bring Him Home. I cannot believe how a voice can touch my soul so deep inside. Everytime I listen to that, I cry and cry and cry...

  • Give me a minute here to catch my breath....

  • Im sick of Alfie Boe. The guy has nothing on Drew.

  • Really great and lovely!! Wonderful singer!

  • Has Drew Sarich played every part in Les Miz? Seriously, I've seen him all over this show! Haha.

  • A tremendous performance by a gifted actor and an even better singer! Simply terrific!

  • First 3 words --- I already had tears. Effortless. Gorgeous. This may be the best version I've ever heard. Wow. WHERE IS THE LOVE TREMENDOUSLY BUTTON?

  • First 3 words --- I already had tears. Effortless. Gorgeous. This may be the best version I've ever heard. Wow.

  • oh my goodness this is frkn amazing! i was looking for this since ages! do you have the whole show?

  • I've read all these posts and I think he's a great voice and a better actor. Yes, his voice is younger than some of the others but, young leaders feel the same passion as older leaders. Fathers of every age worry about their sons and men who remind them of their sons. I though his more "youthful" passion was just outstanding vs the older, and more somber passion we've heard before. Great version and angry screaming hobo remark is just pure foolishness.

  • @daveumpref What an absurd remark! Youthful passion? The entire point of this song is JVJ acknowledging his age and the transience of his life and how he is willing to give it up for Marius. The lyrics themselves are "and I am OLD and will be gone." JVJ shouldn't sound like someone in their late 20s, especially at this point in the show and this song

  • @HaraldJoe69

Hardly absurd. I agree that this is certainly a much more mature piece. My point was that this wasn't an angry screaming hobo as had been previously posted. I also agree that the lyrics do point to his age. However, sacrifice and selflessness aren't always restricted to those who are 45 plus years old. I'm trying to find a way to make a very strong performance fit even if the raw age numbers don't quite add up.

  • Very nice version! I don't mind the youthness in his voice as it gives way for a new interpretation of this song. Valjean returning to the faith he had in God when when he was a younger man. So somehow praying brngs back an innocense in him that was only present in his very early youth.

  • his tone is too bright!

  • When I heard him sing the first song, I died!

  • Although I think that he is amazing and that he sings this song beautifully I think he may just sound a little too... young for this part... still incredible performance

  • Drew Sarich is a bad boy!!!

  • oh i love him

  • simply amazing!!! we just have him as Krolock in "Tanz der Vampire" in Vienna ...but this is simply mindblowing!!!

  • It aint playing , ant idea wht it aint working

  • I liked him better as Judas in JCS :)

  • @zakinverse hahahah i guess i like him a little better in jcs too!, but he's good here too =)

  • @atheshar In the same way that JOJ does it.

  • HE'S NOT GERMAN?!?! Holy Jesus, I for sure thought he was because of "Dracula". My mind= blown.

  • @abbynormal11 lol nope, very american :)

  • Drew , I cried and love your voice above all the voice's before you make me feel so relaxed I need to aplaud your acting skills also luv u xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Drew you are amazing I cried love your so so special voice xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • This song brings me to tears, outstanding.

  • A beautiful voice, the best iv heard , effortless ,

  • Great voice, but he sounds like he's 20, not 40.

    Still, a great performance.

  • This man is such an amazing Valjean, so glad to have seen Drew!

  • This is the first time i've seen him play Jean Valjean. I never knew he was in Les miserables. Drew is awesome. Damn, why does he have to be so awesome in everything he does? He was awesome as Armand as well. *sigh* Drew Is awesome THAT'S ALL I'VE GOTTA SAY!

  • I´ve never seen him as jean valjean, that´s one of the things in life which HAVE TO BE SEEN!!! I just can´t imagine how great it would be to see this live, on stage....

  • Wow, this is so wonderful!! Unbelievable... I'm speechless. He sings the song with a lot of emotion, that I must cry. Drew is the best!!!

  • unbelievable....cant believe his range and pitch control on those high notes...beautiful voice

  • There is none better at delivering this song than drew, crystal clear and as smooth as silk, and what makes it so fantastic is that he makes it seem effort-less

  • young voice for this song , but excellent voice

  • This is the best version I've seen. He doesn't look like a Valjean, but he sings like one.

  • beautiful and powerful

  • just amazing!!

  • was this broadway or westend?

  • I saw him twice before this performance. Once as Grantaire and then subbing in as Javert. I swear he could play any part in this show except for gavroche... =]

  • i love you drew!!!!<3

  • Amazing voice.... not right for the part. If you wanna really hear a good part for him, look up heaven on their minds from jesus christ superstar. Hes completely flawless

  • Its normal to have a Shrine built to Drew in your room.......right?

  • Very beautiful!

Please, also listen to he late Jan Werner's performance.

  • *shivers* So....awesome......hehe, had to comment again. XD

  • This guy's voice makes me melt...him and John Owen Jones are the best Valjeans I have ever heard.

  • @atheshar Probably because he sangs his guts out with his role as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.

  • i never liked musicals....until now. :D

  • Damn... 0__0... Where did you get this recording? Is there a full version somewhere, for trade or whatever?

  • I heard Drew sing this live. I cried like a little child. I am not an easy crier. I seriously cry maybe three times a year. This is my endorsement of his awesomeness.

  • he has an incredible voice don't get me wrong but, he strikes many of the notes with a brightness that makes him not believable as Valjean. Regardless of his age at this point, this is a song and show meant to be sung with darker tones and something that is slightly more classical than what he does and there are moments when he does that and in those moments he IS Valjean and it's brilliant i just wish he did it more

  • Wonderful!

  • BEST VERSION YET. Sensitive, soft, Not overdone. WOW.

  • as everyone else is pretty much mentioning, FANTASTIC VOICE NOTHING WRONG AT ALL, but doesnt sound like an aging man thats weary.. and sick of trying he aint tired of living and SCARED... wrong song but yea GREAT VOICE not so great age

  • @MarineForceAlpha

I don't think he is that old and sick (yet) at this part...that would be the end. He just helped them to fight, and is about to carry Marius through the sewers!

  • I Have seen him as Judas, I Have seen him as Javert, But as Val Jean,

    Perfectly Briliant!

    Go Drew <3

  • I really like this rendition. He does have a youthful voice. And its different, but really really good. His voice is clear as A BELL and just soars beautifully over the music.

  • his voice is stunning, but in my oppinion he sounds a little too young for jean valjean. he does sing the song very very well, but he sounds like a young man singing it

  • He has the most perfect voice ever. John Owen-Jones is fabulous. Colm Wilkinson is a legend. But there's just something about Drew Sarich's voice that I absolutely love. He's my personal favorite...

  • I saw Drew Sarich in Berlin Germany in the Glas Haus where he performed Hedwig and the Angry Inch an amazing performance. He should do it again on a big stage he was truly brilliant

  • oh. my. gosh. he is god! im crying this is so beautiful!

  • I saw him on Broadway singing this and it brought me to tears. I was more moved by him than Lea Salonga who was his co-star. I have loved him ever since!!! Perfection......

  • Drew does a decent job with this (no lie). GO DREW!

  • colm wilkinson is valjean.

  • meraviglioso!

  • He hasn't done "Phantom." However, he did a replacement gig as Valjean (for Alex Gemignani) during the brief "Les Miserables" revival on Broadway. Also, he originated the Broadway role of Armand in the musical "Lestat" (AMAZING JOB), working with former Phantom Hugh Panaro (he has been in Philadelphia ever since the end of "Lestat"), and originated the role of Quasimodo in "Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame" musical in Berlin, Germany in 1999.

I hate sounding snooty, but does that help?

  • @ gloominess71: I'm just checking, but this is from the Broadway revival, correct?

  • Comment removed

  • I just wanted to verify if Drew Sarich played Valjean along Lea Salonga's Fantine ever. I saw this two years ago. Because I really remembered being sooo impressed with the actor who played Valjean.

  • @alexmz123 yeah he did! i watched it then too (but unfortunately lea salonga wasn't there the day i watched). drew sarich was great when i saw him, i loved him as valjean!

  • absolutely fantastic! im in love with you now Drew! although i suspect you are not a friend of Dorothy's :(

  • Drew sings this song better than anyone i have heard, the voice comes into its own as he slowly acts the song, and its an awsome performance from an awsome actor.

  • I watched Colm Wilkison in the Toronto cast and was thinking of what I was going to do concerning chores. Zzzzz... I went to Broadway to see Lea Salonga as Fantine. But Drew brought tears to my eyes as Valjean and I had a renewed respect for the musical. Amazing Broadway cast!!!!!

  • listen to john owen johns latest version and you will be blown away!

  • John owen jones is my fav.

  • Immaculate.

I mean, the pronunciation kinda jars a little bit at 'the suh-merrrs die' - but that's my only complaint.

Truly beautiful, the lightness of touch with those closing notes is like a bell - it always plucks a heartstring!

But then, maybe I'm a hopeless romantic.

    :-]

  • Oh Drew... you are definitely leading man material. Your voice is so pretty. But I dunno... Valjean? If you were twenty years older I might believe it. Even your Enjolras was too young--who is 22 in the book but said to look and act much older.

  • aaah! I have goose bumps!

  • nice voice but weird hair, hehehe~

  • @lookylokk i agree. or JOJ

  • I've seen Les Miserables a couple of times and I've also listened to others and enjoyed them. Still, he was the first one that I really got to see act the song and I absolutely adore his voice.

  • I was like "Where's his voice?" Until he finally started singing high. That's my Drew =D

Was he playing in London the summer of 2008? Then I might have actually seen him life - without me realizing it! =D

  • he's vice is amayzing isn't he?

  • Comment removed

  • Hahaha, I just HAVE to agree on that :p

I don't like his hair by the way, but his voice is.... well even lovelier than just lovely. <3

He is allowed to sing my lullaby :3

  • I saw him and i thought he was realy good but when he sang Who am I? and this his accent began coming into the songs but other than that he was great!

  • @gags24601 what accent?

  • I don't like his accent, although I do think he is a good singer, however in a lot of the songs I think he himself woudl be better for a rock musical... just my opinion. He is very talented tho.

  • i absolutely love this. his voice is incredible.

  • Wow very nice well done thanks for the video ...

  • i loved the understudy-valjean jonathan williams better than drew sarich though he is really good!

  • i dont really like the way he pronounces "if i die let me die" because it makes him sing diffrent but all and all it was pretty good

  • Wonderful performance. Bravo, Bravo.

  • Wow, I wasn't crazy about Drew as Javert, but he makes an amazing Valjean. I think his timbre is so young and warm that it's more suited for a protagonist role. This was beautiful.

  • just simply amazing

  • Wow. I have never really looked beyond Colm and Owen.

I think Drew is fantastic, Maybe his critics don't like change from the normal Valjean, but this is stunning!

  • Maybe his exterior does not suit the role, but his voice does - he sings brilliantly! And isn't it fascinating to watch his "dialogue" with god? He does not just pray, but he brings very different emotions into it, "communicating" with god, begging and being angry and suffering. Great acting.

  • This is one of the Les Miz songs I didn't listen to too often, because I always felt that all the older men including Colm Wilkinson had severe difficulties singing the high notes. This is the first version I really like! Drew Sarich may be too young for the role, but he definitely has the best voice for this song!

  • You have to be kidding......all older men including Colm had severe difficulties singing the high notes??

    You must be smokin crack!

Colm`s version is the version by which all others are judged.

I seriously doubt you have any clue......just because a man is older doesn`t6 mean he will have trouble with the high notes...hell an 'A" isn`t even considered high among tenors.

It is suppose to sound the way Colm and others sing it. there is suppose to be a darkness in the voice!

  • I've just recently discovered Drew Sarich via Lestat, and I've realised that he must have been Jean Valjean the first and second times I saw les mis :O I'm both so pleased and annoyed that I didn't discover him sooner!

  • well, you haven't missed much of his USA career. he like became something in Europe && came here to do Lestat. when that closed, he landed a role as Javert && shortly after was Jean Valjean. he's AMAZING! and he's super nice, too

  • I could listen to this forever - great voice! Who cares about his suitablility for the role. Actors show their diversity by taking varied roles - they suit some more than others, but this guys voice is incredible! Am amazed by peoples scrutiny! Lets just enjoy it and give credit when its due!

  • i love his voice. he can be the singer in a band (which, he is) and sing on broadway. and he's super nice, too!

but i think he plays a better villain. that's just my opinion, though.

  • i dunno his javert wasnt too great his valjean was better, but his armand (in lestat) was AMAZING!

  • Colm Wilkinson will forever be Jean ValJean no one can compare.

  • I saw this last week, this guy was amazing! ^^

  • drew sarich stopped playin valjean in london in nov 2008. so it wasnt him

  • This is a great interpretation..The only thing is that Drew Sarich's voice is too light and bright to be a strong fatherly valjean..I agree with uknowwho889. His voice and acting skills are amazing, but i feel that Valjean should be a more dramatic or deep tenor.

  • His voice perhaps sounds a little too youthful to be an ageing man, but what a voice!!!!

  • I agree I think he'd be good as Marius as a young man his voice is good but I think Valjean should sound more aged and wise. Michael Crawford did a great cover of the song

  • Besides what everyone else has said, Valjean was a pretty sturdy old man. He was a hard worker and very strong. I'm sure his lungs would have been very healthy and powerful of great vocal agility if he had ever had voice lessons.

What I said was probably nonsense, but...eh. Drew is awesome.

  • @GJR1975 His Live performance is much more mature and dark than what this clip shows.

Seeing him live is a different experience.

  • @GJR1975

Indeed; his young Valjean is wonderful, but I think he is a bit too young for older Valjean.

Still, the age of his appearance and voice aside, his quality is stellar.

  • Where did you get that this song is supposed to be sung deep and 'Fatherly'. This is straight from the composer's mouth when talking about Colm's voice being perfect, which was also the inspiration for the song..."... such an incredible voice, so HIGH".

JOJ sings it amazingly well, but he belts it out way too deeply and way too forceful at times (the spirit of the song is a Prayer that is religious and very prayerful.. not one of power and commandful)

  • Drew did a lovely rendition, but I truly believe John Owen-Jones sings this the best.

  • My favourite version of this haunting song. Love Drews pace with the vocal, love his acting. Whe he sings the line 'if I die, let me die', stirs my soul. Beautiful!!!! Makes me eager to get on stage again asap.

  • shannon is great but hes no drew

  • his tone is pure perfection, and his vowels are unbelievable!! SO good!!!

  • I love drew! I am so happy, because i can see him every day play RUDOLF at RUDOLF-Musical at Vienna!^^

  • dis guy is gooda!!!

  • Lucky enough to have seen the very orginal cast and 4 addtitional times over the years. The last being opening night in the early 90s. This is one of the CD's I would never give up!!!!!

  • This song brings me to tears every time...doesn't matter who sings it.

  • Amazing, listened to a few who have sung this and I think it is equal to Jamie Pughs version. Fantastic

  • that guy ain't got shit on this performance...Drew Sarich's vocal range is much more impressive.

  • Na mate think ya wrong, yes its a great performance, but on the night Jamie Pugh sang it with so emotion. This is still one of my favourites performances though

  • God damn, that is great! nothing more to say.

  • He brought me to tears with this song when I saw him on Broadway...

  • Me too!

    Deceptively awesome.

  • Imo, Colm Wilkinson is the quintessential Valjean. JOJ is excellent as well. Sarich has an amazing voice, to be sure, and his energy and charisma are unrivaled, but Valjean he is not--again, imo.

Thanks for the video clip :)

  • In a way I agree... I think if they cut his hair he'd make a great Marius, he just doesn't have that fatherly feeling that Valjean needs. His voice is almost too innocent for Valjean, he is and incredible performer nonetheless.

  • Brilliant

  • love this version

  • I have listened to many versions of Bring Him Home by other vocalists. This version by Drew Sarich is outstanding.

  • God listened to this beautiful voice ....

  • O

    M

    G

    Voice of an angel!

Even more so when he's only like a metre away and singing that.

    <3

  • He Is An Amazing Singer :)

  • and he wasn't afraid of an 'ooh' vowel at 1:30, very respectable. I hate it when singers decide every vowel must be tall and pretty.

  • I love the American wide vowels!

That's totally an insult to most singers.....but he makes me love it.

    Amazing Vibrato, very NPH.

  • when i saw it, he was the only one with an american accent which was stupid, but he was still awesome

  • Nice voice..but...I agree the voice is too young sounding, with most valjeans you'll have tenors that are anchored in the mature high baritone range. great skill though. Phenomenal control on the vibrato

  • the only thing i disagree with in your opinion is the english accent. i don't hear ti. but if you do thats your opinion. and thats fine. sarich is one of my idols. but there are things he does that he is not suited for. i wasn't trying to start a comment fight. i was simply stating my opinion and what i see happen all the time.

  • and i said i agree with that. but obviously somebody rather important thought he was good enough for the roll. to young or not. under study or not. the point i was trying to make is that somebody being put in a roll that they are to young for is a very common thing. this is were the national tour thing comes into play.i see it happen all the time. so there it is.

  • If you weren't trying to compare broadway to community theatre, I literally have no idea what point you were trying to make.

    "I've done 4 National tours, I act for a living, "

uh, good for you? What does that have to do with anything?

Drew Sarich is possibly the best musical theatre actor around, he just isn't suited for Valjean. At this point the character is meant to be in his sixties yet when portrayed as Sarich still looks and sounds like a young man.

  • The reason I commented the way I did is because everyone interprets the character differently. There is no english accent.

  • I was in no way comparing a broadway production to a community theater production. I was simply comparing a theater production to a theater production, broadway or not, its all theater, the only difference is the amount of money and time put in each production. I've done 4 National tours, I act for a living,

  • Omigod. When I saw this. I forgot who our Valjean was. I stared at him on stage, then I almost began crying. This is the only song, and I almost cried. Well done Drew!!!!!

  • Amazing voice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :' )

  • I have to say that drew is a great singer but i think this did not suit him as much as when he sang "all i want to say". When he went big it did not sound right but he is very talented. It is like american idol great singer bad song choice.

  • He has a nice, soft high range, but I thought it sounded whiney when he tried to be big. I didn't like it.

  • moron. there is no accent there . but i guess your a musical theatre expert. all knowing and omnipresent when it comes to anything theatre. now i will agree that he may be a little young. but what does it matter how many community theatre productions have ppl that are to young playing older roles. and as far as the faces go maybe you should try acting onstage. theres a world there that can not be explained. thats were the "silly faces" come from. its feeling . but have a nice day theatre god.

  • haha true

    he is very young

    VERY talented

and the best valjean ive seen live

  • Comment removed

  • do you react like this to every single differing opinion?

also 'you don't act, so you can't comment on acting' is ridiculous in the extreme, as is comparing a professional broadway production to a community theatre production

  • His voice is young but simply amazing. It gives me goosebumps.

  • I saw him on Broadway as an understudy for Javert and thought he was amazing! Quite good in this too, a bit young, but oh well.

  • I know I've already commented, but a few things:

    1. Too many silly faces

    2. Too young

    3. Pick an accent and stick with it. Don't be American for most of it and then say "on and on" in a bizarre not-quite-English accent

I do think that he has the perfect voice for musical theatre, endless energy and limitless charisma... He just plain and simply doesn't suit Valjean.

  • Hey you ass hole drew is one of the most amaaaaazing valjean ever he has a phenominal voice and he takes the part of les mis to a whole new level and he has a different aproach granted but itu is amazing and

    1) no silly faces its called acting and obviously thats something you cant do

    2) hes older than John Owen Jones who is also amazing

    and

    3) hes not british in the slightest not all american accents have to be way over the top

so in conclusion drew is amazing and you are just an ass :D

  • hahahahahaha yes, the fact that I don't act means that I can't comment on other people's acting. Brilliant logic, I sure hope that there aren't any films you don't like.

And Drew Sarich is younger than John Owen-Jones. Look it up.

  • i completely agree with you about Drew.. he is amazing.. has a phenominal voice sio much emotion and power.. he brough me to tears and amazing actor.. no actor has ever been able to do that to me..

  • @Adrianics4k LMAO You're a loon.

  • @GospelAccording2ME I'd actually forgotten about this video, until I got an e-mail informing me that you'd taken it upon yourself to reply to something I said, what, two years ago?

Needless to say, I have not changed my mind: Drew Sarich is talented enough but is hilariously miscast as Valjean, and sings Bring Him Home like an angry hobo screaming at a bus,

  • @Adrianics4k

If by "angry hobo screaming at a bus" you mean the most beautiful and soulful version of this song ever brought to the stage, then I wholeheartedly agree.

  • Comment removed

  • OMG...goosebumps! He's wonderful!

  • Comment removed

  • <3 drew sarich...it's a shame he's married w/ kids

  • I love drew in everything he does. The first time I ever heard him was when I saw him in the les mis revival a couple years ago and I've been a fan ever since. great stuff.

  • i'm seeing the show next week, and i'm wondering who's playing valjean now? is it still drew? i seem to be getting conflicting messages online.

  • David Shannon, He's pretty good. Doesn't compare to Drew though.
