I love Robert Dean but he is not very specific with his interpretation: very little shading of words, very little use of the pauses to create anticipation. Just singing every phrase the same does not turn a good singer into a memorable interpreter. He knows better but does not deliver here. Perhaps traveling the zillion miles to get to Tokyo left him worn out. He is an extraordinary singer and person. Just being able to sing this way in Meistersinger is enough...but not in Verdi.
I like him more in german roles. His german is very good (for an american) and in this clip he doesn't sound very "italien". He is a good singer, one of the best today, but, yes, his timbre is not very characteristic.
Oh, please, if such tenors were typical for this time... The typical tenors of this time don't have any technique. Neither a voice nor a heart to sing.
Maybe he's the only tenor around capable of singing beautifully - both Wagner and Verdi. Of course, I prefer his German roles, but this is very well sung as well.
Yesterday I heard him in Mahler's 8th symphony in Essen and he literally drew me to tears with the tenor's big solo in the second part.
@Pathetikos Have you heard Joseph Calleja live? You may like him quite a bit. His voice on recordings, YouTube, etc. doesn't come close to how he sounds live.
His voice is magnificent! A nitpick though. Something in his vowels or word stress or phrasing or something is just not Italian sounding at all. It bothers me only because his vocal production is so unbelievably fantastic, that his Italian style is not at the level of his amazing voice.

A very lyric tenor of italian style. I can hardly believe this tenor sings Tristan...
