Bernie's great and has been for a long time. Raw, electric and alive. No triple tracked prissy overly articulated solos for him! Strat into Marshall press record... Technique is not the end all be all. Sometimes guitar teachers play solos that sound like... well... a guitar teacher soloing. No fire, no fun. It must be sad for wcb2591 that Bernie wasn't what he wanted/needed him to be. He probably wouldn't like Ollie Halsall, Rory Gallagher, Uli Roth or Ritchie Blackmore either...
the guy is not only a genius guitarist, is a terribly nice man, he has played with Ian gillan, ritchie blackemore and ozzy, what more do you need to know. Yes he likes to do his punk/style free expresion guitar style stuff, whatever you wanna call it.
After playing for the best of him, he deserves to be able to play excatly waht he wants, he is well and last I heard had a music studio in Kent. lx
And his sound is terrible! Someone buy this guy a Boogie or some racks to augment his bone DRY white-fuzzy sound. Where is the "warm" tube singing over drive typical in metal solo sounds.
Anyway... I could go on here. There are several aspects of his playing and sound that I really dislike and fele motivated to express.
@wcb2591 I was there, this was recorded on a camcorder in a room not much bigger than the average sitting room, so any criticism of his sound and tone are pretty redundant. As far as his style goes, who are you to criticize ? It obviously suited Ian Gillan and Ozzy, and if you don't like habitual use of the whammy bar, I suggest you stop watching your own video that you posted. FYI he was using a 62 strat (given to him by Ozzy).
This word limit thing really sucks... I was expecting Bernie to be of the neo-classical, melodic, finesse, oriented genre. Instead, he seems to be more of a punk player who is forever bending and torturing his guitar to barely stay in key. and he seems to use his whammy bar habitually with over and over with the same dive bombing and fluttering. IMO, overuse of the whammy like this can be a bad habit and can detract from the underlying playing.
Now, the reason I felt motivated to post this comment... I can remember all too well the day that Randy died and the subsequent guitarists that replaced him. For many years I had read and heard about Bernie but never actually heard him play.
I just read Rudy Sarzo's book about his touring with Randy and Oz and after hearing him refer to Bernie, I decided to google him for some vids... This led me to this (and may other) vids. Needless to say I was expecting something more significant.
@wcb2591 Man, I must say I agree. I don't get it either, Brad Gillis will tear this cat a whole new ass. Personally i don't really see how he got that gig..
Randy was a hard, if not impossible act to follow. Bernie love him or loathe him is not a Tribute act/copyist guitarist in mentality so this gig was so wrong for him. But hats off to him for saving the day!
I find this difficult to listen to after a few minutes. His tone and sound is terrible!
Sounds more like punk through a cheap amp set to clip rather than anything melodic or bluesy like Hendrix or Rhoads with a more "warm" Marshall tone. What was Oz thinkin!
Ok, this guy is in no way "hendrix for our time"... He sounds more like a punk guitarist who finally almost figure out the major scale. His riffs are sloppy, the pinched harmonics are weak and often misfired, and he uses the whammy bar habitually and predictably and often as a means to lower his missed notes into something that kinda works, etc... I could go on here, but no point.
Wow. Most of all impressed by his mastering and variety with the right hand. Harmonics, muffling, bar (de)pressing, slapping, muting, pinching... Thanks for the post Matt.
Although this is not his best, I think BT is the best living guitarist. He is Hendrix for our time! Listen to him when he was with Gillan & tell me different!
Bernie Tormé learned all Randy Rhoads' guitar parts in just three days and did a cracking good job in difficult circumstances. Brad Gillis was already lined up as Rhoads' replacement but didn't have the balls and/or talent to step in without more preparation time. Ozzy didn't 'toss' Tormé... he left of his own accord and in gratitude Ozzy gave him a classic blue '62 Strat as a parting gift (possibly the one being played in this vid)
Wicked sound he has going there. Suits his playing.

Hi WBC
Thanks for your reasons; fair enough.
I may clean the thread up later but I would be interested to see what others feel.

lol; I an the opposite, I find Brad's playing very hard to listen too. It sounds so macho and cliche.

You can't beleive a fucking word OZZY says, so you'd better stop now.
In his own words "I looked another rock star in the face and said... later"
He walked away from both Gillan and OZZY at his own accord 100%.

LJ, that guitar has lace sensors in, so I doubt it's a 1962 vintage instrument.
