What A great song! I always loved Ann Murray's singing , and Snow Bird was always my favorite. It was written by a fellow Prince Edward Islander, Gene McClallan .It always brings backs memories the days of walking to a one room schoolhouse a mile away from our home with my siblings . Spotting them little snow birds and in the spring trying to find the first red breasted robin . Man those were the days!
"So little snowbird, take me with you when you go. To that land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow." Who writes lyrics like that nowadays? Nobody, that's who! Not only a beautiful, comforting voice, but a beautiful song to go with it. Thanks for posting this little nugget, GOD BLESS!!!
Ah, yes. Those were the days when TALENT and artistry mattered. Who can forget this signature of Anne's? It brings all kinds of emotions to awaken to this tiny bird's flight. It brings tears to lots of folks who cared about the demise of good musics, harmony, lyrics that mean something NOT demeaning of anything. I have wonderful memories of Lake Luise and Banff, listening to this lovely song with my wife and grand children. This song will never die!
I was was engaged to Ann many moons ago. Unfortunately, I guess with her career and constant demand on her time, she never got around to retuning my phone calls so that I could tell her about it. ;o(
I remember at end of my senior year - my dear friend took me to see Anne Murray at Trinity University in San Antonio Texas in 1972. .... I was in awe, I fell in love with her voice ever since. . . truly, it was my honor to see her "close up" ... God Bless you Anne Murray !
I love Snowbird. I love Elvis's version. Few people know he didn't sing it, but actually broke wind during the entire recording. It is in the Guinness Book of World Records, beating Le Pétomaine for Most Flatulence on Key.
We went to see Anne Murray in Indpls in 1982 the fair workers said her and Larry Gatlin (on same show) were the UNFRIENDLIEST performers they EVER saw. I went to take a picture of her and a State Cop threatened to ARREST me for TAKING a PICTURE, I wouldn't go around the corner to see her or Gatlins!. Stuck ups!
What a great love song. If any of have us have ever been in this situation, can relate to this song. It hurts but feels good after listening to this song. Great job.
When my Dad retired, he & my Mom decided to sell everything, buy a RV and head south for the winter.... Every time they left, we'd get the family together and either sing this song or had it played to show them off for the winter...
Several years later, Mom got cancer & passed away only one month later.... at her funeral, everyone must have thought we were nuts but my family got together in front of her casket and started singing this beautiful song to her..it was our way to send her off...
@Wolfe222 I don't think you're nuts. Your story highlights the power of music and how it is a part of our lives. This is a beautiful song and I'm sure your Mom was a beautiful person.
the song was written by Gene MacLellan, and he recorded it as well, but his version was never very popular and simply faded into obscurity...but you can be sure that Anne made him a VERY rich man before he passed away.
a bit more about my post on Gene McLellan. He only had one eye and wore a black patch over his left eye socket.I believe he commited suicide.Gene wrote a very popular gospel tune, made a hit by Elvis and others. It was called "PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND"There's not many artists who haven't recorded this beautiful gospel tune.Ann sang several duets with Glenn Campbell (sic) who once said that Ann Murray had the best pitch of any female singers he had ever heard.
@TheBonelessSausage Well....what a mean spirited thing to say about this incredible female talent. Shame on you. Your parents obviously didn't teach you that if you can't say something nice...don't say anything at all.
I remember being 7 years old and try to sing like her. I do better now that I am grown but there will never be another Ann Murray. Truly timeless voice.
Nobody seems to mention this song was written by Gene Mclellan of Prince Edward Island. He also wrote a song recorded by "The King" but I can't remember the nome of it.
I remember liistening to this song when i was 6 or 7 driving to hockey games with my dad, and when ever I hear this song thats where mind goes, to the back seat of that car on my way to play hockey great memories!
I can honestly thank my mom for introducing me to great love songs. In her teaching she greeted me with great artists such the lovely Anne Murray and even The Carpenters. I thank my mom for being the greatest teacher of music I have come to know!
Love this song. I remember when I use to hear this song as a child I thought she had such a beautiful one of a kind voice. This song always touched me deeply even as a child and made me slow down and think. Too bad we don't have artists like this or songs like this now. It's a shame the negative effect a lot of the songs have on our children today. And we wonder what's wrong with our kids. Artists should be more responsible.
where have the voices and talents gone?well, these days, its all about image, who looks the hottest, who can shock the most, who gets the most headlines, and the supposed "it"factor",and promotion promotion promotion. talent doesnt come into it..back then you made it because of talent.these days the talentless sell millions.shame on the music industry.
thank you , I had the pleasure of seeing her twice in concert.. years ago.. I used to sing this as a young woman.. thank you for posting. Shewolf! please feel free to check out my song Mother Dear on my channel.. hugs.
Can anybody tell me what make of guitar Anne is playing? It does look like a top end "Yairi" Prob a DY1000 . I dont think it`s `a Martin D41/42. Still I might be wrong.......
Great voice!!! No wonder she was held in high esteem by Elvis!!!
She made singing look so easy. She seemed to open her mouth and the words just flowed out. Where have these voices and talents gone? Just take me back to the 70's
with my 68 Camaro, chicks in halter tops, 8 track tapes, and 50 cents a gallon gas. I can take 3 with me if anyone else wants to go with me. I'll buy the gas!
@hotstuffandicecream When you see a singer make it look "easy" or have the "words just flow out" - it's pure talent. You see it in the genuinely talented singers in any generation regardless of genre. Watching them sing is almost as exciting as listening to them because you know you are witnessing something amazing.
@AppleCorp3 Reminds me of one of the stories from the making of "Tears Are Not Enough" - when Anne did her part, she just nailed it on the first take. Foster asked her to do a couple more takes, but none of them matched up to the first one. One shot... perfection.
@hotstuffandicecream : Those were the days!!! I almost pity kids today. They listen to all these songs about bitch-slappin' and bad mouthin' that it make me wonder if any of them know what romance is.
@hotstuffandicecream I remember that. I had a motorcycle and was paying 35 cents a gallon, .05 for a candy bar, and paying for all that with pop bottles I found along the road. 70 & 80s, last of the great years.
@hotstuffandicecream yeah all we seem to get now is crackheads and dumbfucks who don't have a clue what one note is to the next and they have the nerve to call it music
and even the prices of everything has got way out of hand no matter where you live
@weightfeather1 I was wondering why Crystal Gale sings this song with notes drawn out, just like a snow flying bird, and Anne Murray's snow bird version has clipped wings, she didn't carry a note until the end.I assumed that the music producers pushed her around and reading your comment "commercialy viable product " about music tends to prove that those music producer animals did & do exist.
I used to sing along to this when I was 13 years old. My mother loved Anne Murray's music. When she was sick with cancer I used to put this song on for her to give her a lift. Amazing I can still remember all the words and yet haven't heard this song since my teens. Reminds me of my Mum. Good old music.
I grew up smoking pot, getting hi and listening to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in New York City. The first time I heard this song was in my brother's bedroom and for some strange reason it made me nostalgic and teary eyed. I never told anyone that and now 40 years later I post it secretly.
This was my mothers favorite song and hearing it takes me back to my childhood and that AM radio that sat on the windowsill in the kitchen. It speaks to exactly what my mom had gone through with my dad. Of course as a kid it means little but as an adult who is older than my mom was at that time(30) it really hits me.
As a UK kid thro 60s into 70s, my mum played BBC Radio 2 on the wireless every day. The 3 songs that forever remind me of my childhood, probably from "2Way Family Favourites" at Sunday lunchtime, are this one, George Hamilton IV's "Canadian Pacific" & Horst Jankowski's (sp?) "Walk in the Black Forest" instrumental.
All have strong, original melodies which maybe why I still luv em, or perhaps cos they're great classics & were rightly on all the playlists !
the greatest canada guy of all time was Chief Goose Chaser who lived in Alb erta but retired in PEI. He is said to have eaten 400 harbor seals in his life, wasting nothing. he loved to eat uncooked caribou too
@BrokenneckYgor "Don't eat the yellow snow, that's where all the huskies go".As a gourmet first and biologist second,I love raw caribou also and when you keep it uncooked the nutrients don't fry up.Lets face it though, caribou often carry "Yukon Trichinosis" & humans absorb it readily in uncooked meat. Also the Bible says"And you shall not abide to eat of the blood,it is an abomination"Ann Murry can't carry a note in a basket compare the Crystal Gale version,I mean venison, caribou,my meds please!
@AccordionManiac Just noticed your comment. Anne Murry is probably thr best singer of her era to come out of Canada. My wife was brought up in Nova Scotia & Ontario Still has the accent after being back in Arbroath Scotland for over 40 years. She introduced me To Anne Murry, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Gross & many other Canadian things. If you Cant beat them!!!! I'm a died in the wool Scot but even only having been in Windsor Ontarion for a few short hours I feel like a Canadian.
When i was a very little girl i was adopted by my grandparents and they said every time this came on the radio i would jump up and down so excited on the bed...the have a picture of it and i was about 2ish......i love my mom and dad.... :-)
Anne Murray is not recognized with singers like she should be. She had a great voice, had good songwriters, and her live presence was the match of Sinatra. She was not vulgar, her songs were sweet and bittersweet. I wish there was someone similar on the scene now.
This is a great song sung by an excellent singer at ther peak of her powers. Just tried my own rendition for the first time at my local karaoke place--they didn't have the Elvis version, so I sang Anne's. Seemed to work!
I don't think I have ever seen any singer male or female that sang with such ease. She just opened her mouth and the words came out so perfect. I guess that is explains God given talent. I'm an old 70's rocker that liked all the Southern Redneck Rock and this one is far from that but still a great classic and a favoite. Great Post!
WHAT??????? I am speechless.... 2010 there should be a name for people like you who use that disgusting word. What makes you a better person for calling another human a degrating name? You must be perfect. Oy. We are all on this floating, spinning rock together. IF it stops, we all fly off. It ain't gonna pick and choose...........
@MikeysGayToday That anology shows what humans share on a physical animalistic level.Turn on a lightbulb what is visable?Electricity emitted from electric power station to line, grid to home to bulb& light bulb is almost nullified in its emitted light.Do you concentrate on a piece of glass?(It is a grand invention)but inventing a bulb is to gain enlightenment. You see a human soul enlivening the body.ScottfromTexas "defined the lower elements" as young people greet their Dawgs."Hey N."relatively
It's been awhile. I've seen Anne in concert 4 occasions. I recall the 2nd, in Las Vegas. The end of the concert she pitched red roses out. I made eye contact, but it didn't quite make it to me. The older
Gentleman in the row before me got it. It would have been a gracious award for me because I've always had a certain place in my Heart for her. I Love her talent, voice, and beauty! I know real music at 44 years young. I was 1st chair clarinetist, all state 1st band, drum major, Love you Anne!
@lstuarts with new system of beta videos and many being changed automatically and eventually all will be changed, where can i go to save a video to favorite cause this has been eliminated from me and very hard now to download videos nad save to your favorite on your fav list,i have so many ,who can help me cause they wont ,you have to go thru 1000 people before contacting them
I have loved this song for nearly 30 years. It still gives me goose bumps to hear it. Love that sweet spirit and the thrill of those forever unexpected resonating low notes.
Look up inane in the dictionary. Yes, you have a right to comment, but, people like you come in here "purposely to ridicule her". I think she sounds good, don't forget, it is an old recording.
Oh, wow, amazing find on YouTube. This was when Anne was a scared rabbit on stage. I saw her live in 1976. She had the shortest skirt on and I have to admit at that time she was hot. I heard her perform in 2007 and she has really lost her voice. It's not her fault and it's a shame - she was such a wonderful singer. Must be the cold Canadian air - the same thing happened to Gordon Lightfoot, but the poor guy survived an aortic aneurism bursting about 3 years ago.
I did an acoustic cover of this song. Check it out, and comment and rate. Subscribe if you like it, I could use all the support I can get! Thanks so much!
This is my favorite song by Anne. I collected her records when I was a kid in the early 1970's. She was one of my favorite singers, very talented and C

Does anyone know a website I can get free sheet music for this song?
Thanks

Of course as a kid it means little but as an adult who is older than my mom was at that time(30) it really hits me.
bluekarma 1 year ago 20
@bluekarma Your words sounds familiar !

He is said to have eaten 400 harbor seals in his life, wasting nothing. he loved to eat uncooked caribou too
BrokenneckYgor 1 year ago
@BrokenneckYgor "Don't eat the yellow snow, that's where all the huskies go".As a gourmet first and biologist second,I love raw caribou also and when you keep it uncooked the nutrients don't fry up.Lets face it though, caribou often carry "Yukon Trichinosis" & humans absorb it readily in uncooked meat. Also the Bible says"And you shall not abide to eat of the blood,it is an abomination"Ann Murry can't carry a note in a basket compare the Crystal Gale version,I mean venison, caribou,my meds please!

Can't decide which one's better: Anne Murray's or Lynn Anderson - both have great voices, but I have to say Murray has a very unique voice
AccordionManiac 1 year ago
@AccordionManiac Just noticed your comment. Anne Murry is probably thr best singer of her era to come out of Canada. My wife was brought up in Nova Scotia & Ontario Still has the accent after being back in Arbroath Scotland for over 40 years. She introduced me To Anne Murry, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Gross & many other Canadian things. If you Cant beat them!!!! I'm a died in the wool Scot but even only having been in Windsor Ontarion for a few short hours I feel like a Canadian.

Anne Murray is not recognized with singers like she should be. She had a great voice, had good songwriters, and her live presence was the match of Sinatra. She was not vulgar, her songs were sweet and bittersweet. I wish there was someone similar on the scene now.

@jbigosjr
Nice looking woman, pleasant voice, good intonation; good entertainer, but the Sinatra comparison is unfounded.

Great Post!
