if you "lose your ego" you wouldn't be a person anymore. A man is an interpreter of the universe, everything is subjective, you experience the world through your ego. People think, feel and express themselves in first person. The word ego translates "I" from latin. So what's good in losing yourself? A stupid hippie aphorism. They had some good ideas but this wasn't one of them.
Pet Sounds is the greatest pop album of all time because of its innovation, its timeliness, and because it was conceived and produced by a 23-year-old (22-year-old when he began it)!
if you read brian wilsons own book and as you go through it play the songs he writes about they make a lot more sense but we all choose our own fav because the words will touch our souls in one way or another : )
thank god brian is a keyboard player we would have missed out on this also trumpet players bassists and drummers dont usually write songs like this one live forever brian wilson and i know brain played bass too
Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson, broke new ground with composition and performance as it related to rock, or modern music. Brian was unique in many ways as his talent had (has) no end. He is a real musician in that he can compose, read, write, and perform, which by any standard, let alone today is not normal.
When one says that Pet Sounds is one of the best recordings of all time, it is a great compliment, but a HUGE understatement!
Without the truth, there can be no real morality, justice, equality, success, freedom, love, security, peace, spirituality or even survival. If you are seeking the truth, search "Truth Contest" in Google, then open The Present on the homepage and read what it says.

@texantillidie24 You're entitled to your opinion. Ignore the comments of people who take it as a personal insult and try to start a fight. I'm sure that's exactly what these guys wanted to create when they made this music...
Although, I gotta say, The Beach Boys are awesome! Hugely underrated, in my opinion.
@8121980Music Lol I think you mean Rubber Soul... Revolver came out after Pet Sounds.
I think people assume that since Pet Sounds influence Sgt. Pepper, it must have been influenced by the previous Beatles album, Revolver. But in reality, Revolver was being recorded at the same time, and Pet Sounds was influenced by the latest Beatles record out, Rubber Soul.
It's so unfortunate that we have moved into the "Singles" world. The album is gone... for those that have not, listen to this album in its entirety. It's so frickin' great. Hopefully, 3000 years from now humans are listening to The Beach Boys, Led Zepplin, Floyd, The Beatles, and Dylan.
@TheNickrazor you do realize that the first wave of prebeatles rock n roll was entirely built on singles right? name me a great elvis album from before the 60s, i cant think of one. why? because he built his career on singles, nothin wrong with that
@clashcitywannabe Everything you wrote is correct, but I fail to see how that is really a reply to my comment. I never mentioned Elvis... unless you simply mean that singles are fine, in which case I believe that the album is a great "canvas" for a band. A song may tell a story, but a good album can be epic. with each track a chapter in a book. I find it discouraging at best that the album is going away. Luckily for me, and those that feel the same, there were a few great decades of album rock.
All this 'best album ever' stuff bugs me. I understand if someone says 'this is my favorite album of all time' but I don't really understand what people mean when they say things like 'this is the best album of all time'. Every piece of music is unique and each has a unique effect on the listener, some people like the effect, some people don't, why would one assume that his own preference for a piece of music is any indication of how 'good' or 'bad' the music is? I sure like me some pet sounds.
@stethoscanomaly Well that's a matter of debate. Some people say art is judged purely on individual taste, but is this really true? It is widely known that Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo are some of the "best artists of all time", but how could this be true if resonance and art were purely existential? The answer is, it isn't, and this could POTENTIALLY be one of the best albums of all time.
@stethoscanomaly what they mean by "best of all time" is simply that it affects more people in a positive way than most albums would....so you really have no argument
@CabboPearimo8 why is my argument gone? nothing affects everyone positively, just some more than others. for example, an album like sgt pepper changed music and pop art forever. thats undeniable. similarly, pet sounds helped change pop music from simplistic to complex, emotionally and musically. it was more innovative than, say, surfin usa. why is it difficult to then to call it one of the greatest of all time?its effect and influence on musicians and culture is undeniable.
@stethoscanomaly YES! Brilliant point. Music is subjective, calling something the best album of all time means nothing, saying its your personal faviroute does.
@stethoscanomaly lol, i dont think so, rhianna has not the same artistic merit as this guys, i agree that you could have a different viewpoint but being objetive this is one of the best albums ever
@stethoscanomaly leave it to rationals to make a 'calculated' list of the 'best' albums of all time. The stiff lot don't understand art. They try to grasp it with numbers and arguments but it's only the painter's soul. Basically comparing the artists' emotions and that's not possible. Art is something to feel not analyze. Well it's no use saying it. There will continue to be 'definitive' lists of what you ought to be hearing or seeing or doing.
Saying a certain stereotype of a crowd is wrong and another is completely right is just like saying, "My music is the best ever and yours is bad." If art is not something to analyze (on that I agree with you) why to argue about defining what right and wrong with it?
@6dmind you have a point, i guess i was no better than the people that force their own ideals onto others. What I really meant to say is that music to ME is art with sound. In my opinion, it has no greats and no one in music is better than another. I shouldn't have knocked how other people like to view music.
@PlayerPunisher Good point. The thing about Pet Sounds, though, is that the ones who acknowledge its superiority are not just "rationals," but also those with "painters souls." People like Paul McCartney, Philip Glass, Leonard Bernstein, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan all acknowledged its transcendence.
@stethoscanomaly I know it may seem dogmatic, but there are legitimate reasons to call Pet Sounds the best album ever made. It's widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative, technically brilliant, memorable, beloved, transcendent, critically acclaimed, and influential albums ever by music professionals with "qualified" opinions. Pet Sounds is the "best" album in the same way that Tolstoy is the "greatest" novelist. You don't have to agree, but you still have to acknowledge its achievement.
@stethoscanomaly You are referring to a tactic that marketers use to influence public thinking. ("Top 10 albums of all time") It has infected all of our minds. You are correct.
@stethoscanomaly I agree with you, but art is only subjective to a certain extent. There is no doubt that a piece by Chopin is 'better' than a song by Rhianna just like there is no doubt 2001: A Space Odyssey is better than Michael Bay's Transformers.
this is one of the songs that really stood out to me on pet sounds. still one of the best albums of all time, cant wait to listen to it high next week
SUPER SONG!!! One of the highest points of Pet Sounds IMO. Mike at his best in this artistic album. In fact, I think VOCALLY, not lyrically, IKTAA is better than HOTYE; IMO Brian sang it worse than Mike. M.b. that's why Mike's version with his lyrics was in official release instead of HOTYE. Chorus was sung by Brian though. By the way, I rank PS higher than SPLHCB, notwithstanding Rolling Stone Magazine's listing. And I assume that I'm not alone in that.

But anyway I'm glad to communicate with new people. Take it easy! ;)
@TheMarishka9 "Let The Wind Blow", "Meant for you", "Only with you", all have hefty Mike Love involvement... but any of the creativity he had a part in was quite small in comparison to other band members... and the damage he personally did to the band dwarfs his achievements, if you ask me.
@ilovejourney1 I'll tell you this, that if The Beach Boys could have completed their Smile Album in the 60s, it would have actually been the best album of all time.

haha the mushroom comment that only 19 people like definitely needs more people to like it and more people should try shrooms...definitely something you should experience in your lifetime
@xtelemasterx I agree that its the best but why is that wrong its one of the best things the beatles did their was a creative rivalry between those groups then
@spacepatrolman there isn't anything wrong with it, i was just being sarcastic, i was implying that inspiring a beatles album makes this album despicable, but of course i don't really feel that way, i love the beach boys!
Sometimes Emergency words begin 2 lose impact when their is PREJUDICE.
ALmost immediately all scramble 2 suddenly search 4 the dead to blame, sadly it is an entire societal responsibility. Community Safety & Security is a Humanitarian Pledge.
Where was it learned? WHERE were ~YOU?!
So,. where do you think you could have gone to go on like that? Sneaking around like that. Entering Funding Fraud to keep These Emergencies indefinitely at odds & in circuit? Somehow it had to fit trashed? WAU
@NathanielDeTipton "Pet Sounds" is a masterpiece, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. "Rubber Soul" and "Pepper" are RIGHT THERE with this album. And we can go track for track if you like.
No competition when it comes to the beatles it beach boys...although this is a fantastic album I don't see how anyone can think this is better than sgt peppers, revolver or White album. Even dark side of the moon is fucking epic but hey don't shoot me down for having my opinion. Just was surprised people thought this was the best album ever?
well...music is subjective. In my opinion, this is better than white album..but yeah...not better than revolver for sure, or rubber soul, and well, idk about sgt peppers, probably not.
@mattguy91 Arguably their best album? Easily their best album. Easily the best album of all time! Actually second best album, Revolver is number one but this album is right up there
@DonSkuzaCinema Fuck off, you're the only person here because of the ending of some obscure movie. I'm hear cause I wanted to listen to the fucking album.
@ddr122 Well, it's certainly arguable... though I don't think there would be anything in all of rock or popular music to even compare if it weren't for the Beatles. Personally, though, I favor Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road, and I have a hard time deciding whether I favor this or Rubber Soul more.
For whatever reason, on my copy of the album (2006 CD+DVD) there's a wierd signal that comes out of the right channel at around 2:13. Has anyone else noticed this?
Dark Side is great but very overrated... Meddle is better IMO... and Magical Mystery Tour is better than the ass-kissed Sgt. Pepper.... opinion of course but Pet Sounds should be up there. There will never be another album like this, there can't be as record companies do not fund big projects like this anymore.
Magical Mystery Tour is pretty awesome, but I dont't count Capitol Albums as official cannon. At the end of the day it's really a compilation of the non-Pepper 67 songs. I dunno. My opinion on the best Beatles album is alway changing. Right now it's Abbey Road.
Meddle is a funny one two. The first song is fantastic, the next two are good but not great, the next two are just crap, and the last song is the greatest thing I have ever heard in my life.
@TheKidsAreAllRed Sgt. Peppers is the only album that rivals Pet Sounds. I've come back to this album after not listening to anything on it for months, and it's better than just about anything I was listening to. What was I thinking?
@foolery15 I disagree. Revolver is much better than Sgt. Pepper's and slightly better than Pet Sounds. 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Taxman', 'Here There and Everywhere', what could be better?
@Tesseract7d I guess i was trying to say that he had it the wrong way around. Revolver is definitely my favorite beatles album. but i do think Pet Sounds is better than Sgt Pepper's. who was it that decided they were gonna call Sgt Pepper's the greatest album ever and somehow got everyone to agree with them?
@SophisticatedMike thanks. Thought so too, I'm a big fan of the original Prisoner but couldn't remeber this song. The re-make bored me to death and I lost patience long before the end. The Beach Boys are the greatest, this song is sheer class.

Pet Sounds is the best album ever made. The only thing wrong with this album is that it allegedly inspired Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
xtelemasterx 11 months ago
@xtelemasterx I agree that its the best but why is that wrong its one of the best things the beatles did their was a creative rivalry between those groups then
spacepatrolman 10 months ago
@spacepatrolman there isn't anything wrong with it, i was just being sarcastic, i was implying that inspiring a beatles album makes this album despicable, but of course i don't really feel that way, i love the beach boys!

Chacha5678 1 year ago
No competition when it comes to the beatles it beach boys...although this is a fantastic album I don't see how anyone can think this is better than sgt peppers, revolver or White album. Even dark side of the moon is fucking epic but hey don't shoot me down for having my opinion. Just was surprised people thought this was the best album ever?
MrMoviemaster26 1 year ago
@MrMoviemaster26
well...music is subjective. In my opinion, this is better than white album..but yeah...not better than revolver for sure, or rubber soul, and well, idk about sgt peppers, probably not.
BloodyHarvest 1 year ago
@BloodyHarvest JMO but not better than Revolver or Abbey Road. Perhaps better than Rubber Soul and Sgt. Peppers. Better than White Album

Arguably?
ddr122 1 year ago 35
@ddr122 Well, it's certainly arguable... though I don't think there would be anything in all of rock or popular music to even compare if it weren't for the Beatles. Personally, though, I favor Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road, and I have a hard time deciding whether I favor this or Rubber Soul more.

For whatever reason, on my copy of the album (2006 CD+DVD) there's a wierd signal that comes out of the right channel at around 2:13. Has anyone else noticed this?
I suppose it'll just vanish as I get older....

@FetaCheese222
Dark Side is great but very overrated... Meddle is better IMO... and Magical Mystery Tour is better than the ass-kissed Sgt. Pepper.... opinion of course but Pet Sounds should be up there. There will never be another album like this, there can't be as record companies do not fund big projects like this anymore.
bobshenix 1 year ago
@bobshenix What about SMiLE? :|
FetaCheese222 1 year ago

TheKidsAreAllRed 1 year ago
@TheKidsAreAllRed Sgt. Peppers is the only album that rivals Pet Sounds. I've come back to this album after not listening to anything on it for months, and it's better than just about anything I was listening to. What was I thinking?
foolery15 1 year ago
@foolery15 I disagree. Revolver is much better than Sgt. Pepper's and slightly better than Pet Sounds. 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Taxman', 'Here There and Everywhere', what could be better?
Tesseract7d 1 year ago
@Tesseract7d I guess i was trying to say that he had it the wrong way around. Revolver is definitely my favorite beatles album. but i do think Pet Sounds is better than Sgt Pepper's. who was it that decided they were gonna call Sgt Pepper's the greatest album ever and somehow got everyone to agree with them?
foolery15 1 year ago
@foolery15 not even a top 3 Beatles album IMO, but still remarkably brilliant music

@SophisticatedMike thanks. Thought so too, I'm a big fan of the original Prisoner but couldn't remeber this song. The re-make bored me to death and I lost patience long before the end. The Beach Boys are the greatest, this song is sheer class.
