  • Fuck what a painful interview! I really dig John's guitar work, it's a part of my soul. I grew up on it but he needs some guidance! He needs to know that it's OK to be liked, to have your art be appreciated. It's OK to be popular! Just don't abuse it in any way. I reckon it's like an extreme yet false humility here. He knows deep inside that it's nice, it's great that other people dig his music but there's this little demon telling him to not accept it 'coz if he does, he's being a sell-out.

  • As fucked up as he is right here, I still love him lol.

  • and again Keith morris (the guy with the dreads ) proves hes a real cool guy

  • he is not talking that his music was the only great music, he just says thats the olnly kind of music he wanted to hear at that time was like the music he recorded on the album

  • 0:47 is he using cocain?

  • Had his teeth already been replaced when this was recorded?

  • @Alpinestars91 Yes, he has cheap dentures in here...

He recently had them replaced with actual implants (in his rejoining rhcp years)

  • @retrohippie Where did you find out all this? I mean, is there some massive database of Frusciante info that I have missed? Or is the info just in the magazine articles? Oh man, I would love an autobiography from Frusciante.

  • @retrohippie this makes me even sadder, i mean he left once but he returned and we were all happy and everything and now hes gone again..it seems like he erased everything..like he doesnt give a fuck..

  • @kingnothing189 not true man.

  • @BloodSugarSexMagik10 hope so..its just that it leaves you that specific feeling :/

  • @kingnothing189 yeah deff i understand, im HUGE FRUSCIANTE fan. He's human ya kno? things change

  • Damn, he is FUCKED up here.

  • is this really 1997?

  • John is definitely not clean here. Maybe he was "trying" to get clean...but he was a good year away from any sort of real solid cleanliness...

  • Signing autographs is bullshit. Talk to the man, get inside his mind.

  • I believe this is post Chili Peppers, and at the begining of his heavy drug years. His soul searching years, so to speak, and his almost killing of his human flesh year.

  • @Kozmikreeko31 This is right after his drug years. He had just gotten clean here.

  • if you see the video of his shows, and janms in 97 he was with brown hair and looked like worst at vpro 94, he played moist vagina of nirvana in some shows and looked very sick, like going to death, the qualit of this video is not good but he looks better in that shows, i think its in the end of 97

  • He looks better here than he did in 1994.

  • @BejnXander i dont think so... the quality is just lower. just listen to his speech...

  • @THEsallback He did get sober briefly because his body had a fifth of the blood he was meant to have. Maybe this interview was around that time.

  • @BejnXander maybe. he already had tooth implants in this interview so it is probably true

  • @THEsallback All in all, I'm just glad he's back in the land of the living.

  • this is the unpredictable, spontaneous confused ,jumbled ,scramble brained behaviour of an ex Crack/Meth addict. Some sort of psycho stimulant addiction. His body movements the way he talks just ooze Crack/meth brain damage.

Its odd only a couple of years later he seemed completely normal even if he still looked a little shell shocked from his hellish decent into a full on 5 year drug ordeal. but yeah its not pretty!!!

  • ...what was I saying?...

  • It's strange, he still looks like BSSM 1991 John here, but by the time he joined the peppers a year later, he was starting to look completely different.

  • @XxxBOMBTRACKxxX

because he got teeth implants :O

i know the old frusciante looks totally different

  • @XxxBOMBTRACKxxX yeah i know aye, i was just thinking that.... but in between this interview and him rejoining the band two things happened to john that changed his looks. He fell of stage in 97 and broke his nose (ouch) and then somtime after that he had a really fuckin band gum/tooth infection type thing and had to get ALL his teeth replaced and well the operation from that would have changed his facial features heaps.

  • fuck that if it wasnt for the fans he would just be a junkie on the streets with no money. sign autographs. thats the least he could do.

  • I feel like when he tells the smoking teabags story someone should hold up a sign that says, "LAUGH". There's an awkward pause as Keith and the other dude just aren't amused.

  • This interview is exactly as long as the first song of John´s last album, and reminds me of the legendary drummachine TR-909.

  • wow, our hero can barely articulate his thoughts, however i like how hes dissing on anthony: he loves signing authographs

  • Wow, he is sooo fucked up here. It's sad, like watching a turtle on it's back struggle.

  • was this b4 or after the peppers asked him to rejoin and go to rehab?

  • @ksbrownie1 before

  • @ksbrownie1

    before rehab

  • is it wrong that i find this funny. the guy is obviously wiped out on Crack or Coke or Crystal Meth, Speed whatever. They expect him to give a coherent interview, the way they just sit there. trying to be polite when he is off his rocker is hilarious.!!!

  • @hundhun17 actually he was probably on some pills, cuse when you go on rehab,so you cant just quit take a drugs day to day, hence you need take methadon and other things...Probably hence he seems like on something...It was during his rehab..If that make you sense

  • Comment removed

  • he was still using at this time but he doesnt look as bad as the '94 video because he had cleaned up some and started using more crack then heroin, and if you notice he just got his dentures in and in anthonys book he had his teeth out cuz of an oral infection got a script to valium and ate the whole bottle and then relapsed, but more so on crack where before he was using persian heroin and cocaine

  • @cassynchris3 actually he was probably on some pills, cuse when you go on rehab,so you cant just quit take a drugs day to day, hence you need take methadon and other things...Probably hence he seems like on something...It was during his rehab..If that make you sense

  • Can we clear something up! While it's true that the priority of SFTSYH was to raise money to sustain his drug habit, it certainly ISN'T true that the songs were created in that spirit. A majority of the tunes were recorded around and during the time of his first album, Niandra LaDes (and before!) It's a compilation of his usual heartfelt, emotionally driven music released for drug money.

  • 8:20 wow you can feel he really didn't want to straight up admit he was a junkie, that must have been tough for him to say.

  • sad to say he was STILL a hard core junkie and was only reasling Smile From The Streets You Hold for drugs and drugs only. He looks better since 1994 in this interview but i dont understand how if he is still the same way. And sad that unforntunallty he banned the album becase it was made for only drugs and he obviously is not a junkie now

  • @ksbrownie1 John almost died of a blood infection in '96 and was sober for a few months.

  • @Subdelirium42 that was in 97

  • i just love john....i don't care if he thinks he's too cool for the world here(cause he's high as all hell) but the guy makes his guitar sing, scream, express every emotion and for that and for all the music he's brought into this world i love him unconditionally

  • how crazy would it be if john gave you all his music, lol.

  • here he was still addicted to crack and alcohol. It wasnt until his stint in rehab in January of 1998, that he got completely clean.

  • @adamcarp83 but he looks better than 1994, but Niandra Lades is the best album he ever made..

  • He sounds like a complete junkie this entire interview. He's great, but damn.

  • Oh and question...did John get reconstructive surgery to his nose to...or did his nose just get broken?

  • @XXcatbones ive read that he sustained a broken nose from a fall he took but im not 100 percent positive on that

  • @XXcatbones broken..badly

  • It seems like this is when he got his new teeth....i thought he got his new teeth sometime after the album: smile from the streets you hold

  • Inside my brain

    You know I'm livin' baby

    Inside my brain

    I'm upstairs..

    - Angry Samoans

  • spero di non vederlo mai più in questo stato...

  • "i mainly just stayed in a room and shot speedballs for 5 years"

ha ha ha i love him

  • in 1997 has he ever quit drugs?

  • In 1994 only nirvana, maybe alice in chains was mading good music , for real...Frusciante is a genius that was really mad in 1993/94 the time he just quit rhcp

  • I hate how his way of speaking was changed from him doing drugs :(

  • Damn! At 8:20 he says, "I mainly just stayed in a room, and shot speedballs for like 5 years..." A speedball is a combination of heroin and cocaine.

  • he dosn't even sound like a heroin addict, he sounds like he just trips balls all the time

  • There is a Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness picture on the fridge in the background =D

  • i love john more than anything in the world, but him saying hes humble and non egotistical and then saying there wasnt any good music out in 1994 except his, or that hes sitting there making that guy hold the mic to his mouth the whole time or when he says that the music wasnt meant for the public, just himself, but oh, hed release it anyway, is kind of hypocritical.

  • @DimebagsLeftToe yep, but then again his mind isn't completely there.

  • @RacismIsSchism haha yeah. gotta love him

  • @DimebagsLeftToe Thats not egotistical at all, just honesty! He's explaining the way he felt, sugar coating it to me is egotistical.

and I'm sure the interviewer would get over it, alot of interviewers do hold microphones anyway!

I really don't understand why 'fans' get so zany about minute things that their idols say. It's an interview..... about 13 years old as well...

  • @DimebagsLeftToe he didnt originally want to release his first album, he said himself that he enjoyed just playing it for friends, but his friends got him to release it through Rick Rubin if I remember correctly. Plus when he was like this it seemed like he was trying so hard to not be a "rockstar" that he ended up coming back around to it from the other direction

  • @DimebagsLeftToe after 5-6 years of constant use of heroin, pot, crack ...

would ur mind be clear ?

  • @Savatije123 pot is not in the same category as any other drug. how about u subsitite alchohol (one of the worst drugs on the planet) or his valium addiction for the minor "drug" pot

  • @DimebagsLeftToe btw most presenters hold the mic anyway they dont let people hold it

  • @DimebagsLeftToe shut up

  • @DimebagsLeftToe he IS a humble guy at his core. Some drugs, however, make you feel like the most important person on the planet. And in general he was right with what he said in this interview even if he was fucked up.

  • @olitraiga true! damn good point.

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

    1. i don't think he meant that his music was just the greatest but that he was one of the only ones doing it for the love of music and the music out at that time was being made mainly for money.

    2. an interviewee traditionally doesn't hold the microphone

    3. At the time that he was making the music it wasn't meant for public consumption but later realized how easy it is to share music with others, he obviously doesn't care to make a profit from it.(He made it pretty clear.)

  • @DimebagsLeftT he has really high that whole time, if you look up some of his favorite music he mentions plenty of stuff from the 90's, he's said before that Fugazi was his favorite band, most of their stuff was released in the 90's, I even think they put one out in 94, he's just really high or something

  • @DimebagsLeftToe and i guess your perfect.

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

You know, they were interviewing JOHN, so he gave them long, informative answers. Also, he said he tries to be humble. It's something he considers, whereas most popular musicians wouldn't even talk about it. Granted he minces words sometimes, but he didnt come off as arrogant here, just a bit intoxicated, perhaps.

  • at 7:41 you can see it !

  • I don't think he was back with the peppers at this time because of his tee shirt "Fuck The Chili Peppers " haha , hard to see it on the video , but this is what the shirts says .

  • john is an honest man

  • FUCK BALLS!!!!! WHAT WAS HE ON

  • does he have new teeth or what? i didnt undestand so well his history, he had a teeth replacement and then he went to the rehabilitation ? or he had all together?

  • @carliarce When he quit the band, he was a full time druggy and when he did that, he never took care of his teeth. So when he got sober, he had to get all of his teeth removed and got dentures.

  • @CuteHotChiliPeppers yes.. but i can see that he had new teeth in the video.. or im not looking well ?

  • @carliarce Yeah, pretty sure he does have new teeth or else he wouldn't have talked so different.

  • @CuteHotChiliPeppers so when he was doing the rehabilitation he make this interview? i didnt understood that

  • @carliarce I don't know...it's not really clear. But I know for sure that he has dentures in here. He was back with RHCP in 1998 but he must have been in rehab somewhere at that time.

  • 'I'll give myself to the world, even if they don't want me me I don't care'. For exposing his thoughts and dreams and sharing his words thankyou so much John xx

  • isnt he undergoing the rehabilation process at this point? thats why the interview is so interesting I think because he is in a transformation stage, he looks healthier maybe in the 1994 interview because now the heroin has caught up with him, he has been using for longer

  • hahaha so what am i saying. i fucking love him

  • If you look closely, you can see his brain beginning to ooze out of his nose.

  • Holy Shit! It's Keith Morris!

  • He looks better there than in the '94 interview.

  • how john talks ha....alot of dudes on the strip talk like this...

  • i don't understand shit, thank god you are now in your place john, i bet he doesn't know how people (like myself) loves him, but truly love, like almost a brother to me. he teached me through videos and dvd's and interviews and MUSIC, what music is .. thanks john

  • He has nice teeth here, didn't he get dentures when he checked into rehab? When did he exactly check into rehab anyway?

  • @Str1keRS1R yeah this is odd, he entered rehab in january 1998, and there is when they discovered that had that infection in his mouth, but that teeth are new, guarantee

  • This is probably the most powerful advert for not doing hard drugs....or any drugs at all...I have seen many of my heroes (and friends) in a fucked up place (thanks youtube)....but John here takes the cake....So glad he got out of that state of mind and away from smack n crack, cos he really is a great guy and mega-fuckin-talented. Those dudes doing the interview are fuckin parasites though, how low can you go?

  • @stutaggart why are those guys parasites? what have they done in their lifetime to achieve the title of parasite?

  • @RacismIsSchism I'm guessing "stutaggart" is calling them "parasites" because they're giving an [indept] interview with him while he's this spaced? I dunno. To be honest, I actually understand a lot of the points JOhn is making :) I'm very glad he's still kicking sober, and is alive, he's a hero of mine :)

  • @RacismIsSchism i don't think they are parasites but, anyway, the guy on the right is keith morris, original vocalist for black flag and vocalist for circle jerks, founding member of both, john frusciante probably idolized him when he was a young punk rocker :)

  • @RacismIsSchism haha, probably singing in the circle jerks. kids nowadays don't know shit from feces.

  • @stutaggart My friend,

you should possibly consider that John NEEDED to go thru the heroin days to arrive where he did/is....

I personally HEAVILY subscribe to the thinking that youve got to live in the dark, and quite possibly be even nearly drownded by the dark to know where you dont want to be!

    Meaning:

experiencing HEAVILY what you dont want,

can give you a far clearer direction and focus on the road you DO want

  • @stutaggart I see it differently. This is an example how love, faith , determination, and honest evolution through your life create miraculous healing and transformation. No need to look down on anybody buddy. Specially someone who provides probably the most honest and pure music out there.

  • @dieguetti I agree with you totally, you said it perfectly

  • @stutaggart i agree with RacismIsChism.. the guy probably asked john 2 questions throughout the video.. john just talks alot and is extremely interesting

  • @stutaggart Maybe u dunno that the guy is Keith Morris (Black Glag/ Circle Jerks), a Punk icon and one of Frusciante's greatest influences and best friend...

  • @stutaggart Sorry, I Mean Black Flag, not clag!

  • @stutaggart you think this is bad, check out his VPRO interviews from 1994, he's waaay worse in those

  • @stutaggart I don't think he ever really was in a shitty state of mind, just super body damaging lol, but you can tell he never lost himself really i think. i think he is wierding the shit out of these interviewers haha

  • @stutaggart you realize one of those guys is Keith Morris the original singer of Black Flag and one of John's heroes? John is high here so he's not making sense, and if John saw this today he'd admit it.

  • Of course it doesn't give me comfort to know that he was still on drugs at this point but he sounds like a bit of cunt here and i'm just glad that there was a good reason for it.

  • I love how at about 50 seconds in, he forgets what he was even talking about. lol

  • What does John's shirt say? Fuck.....

  • at this point he was still addicted to crack cocaine and alcohol.

  • @MrMusiclover4 john did crack....?...i'm pretty sure his only addictions were only heroine?

  • @SweetKooshy yeah he did crack too

  • @Cooderospie oh shit haha..damn that's pretty intense..i dont like to hear people doin crack =/...definitely causes permanent damage

  • i read he was a bigger fan of shooting cocaine than heroin

  • i think i saw a better quality video of this and his shirt said "fuck the red hot chili peppers"

  • @Bayview05 serious find it for me plz

  • if i met john, id give him his own album with MY autograph on it

  • yeah that would throw him off , haha

  • Nah i wouldn't say he is... he was just still getting stronger.

  • High as a kite.

  • I think he sounds half weak, have confident because the drugs are wearing off. Obviously the drug withdrawal would make it the worst year of his life. Certainly sounds a lot better than in 1994. Then again, the Life's A Bath video shot the same year shows him at clearly as low as he could go.

  • no withdrawal takes a year maybe 2 months at most

  • is this a hole cover?

  • Was he still on drugs at this point?

  • @tc1927 yeah but as far as i know he was cleaning up around the time of this interview. it seems that he was at the peak of his addiction (at least to heroin) when he did the interview in 94 with mtv where he literally looks like a skeleton covered in skin

  • That interview in 94 wasn't with MTV. It was with a Dutch station VPRO.

  • @tc1927 hell yeaaaahhhhhh

  • he might of been i saw some interview where he said he would clean up periodicly

  • man i love john but his attitude in this particular interview pissed me off a bit. he seemed really self righteous and insensitive. whereas his music is the opposite. love the guy but think he's a lot cooler now-a-days. i went through a phase where he could absolutely do no wrong in my mind, but since i've grown out of it a bit i can look at this without bias and say i disagree with a lot of the things he's saying. like smashing glass bottles and shit? not sure if that was necessary

  • Yeah, it's weird how he still seems so negative towards Anthony and the Chili Peppers in this video and then the next year he joined them again and was apparently humble and positive again. Wonder what happened in a year to change his attitude so much.

  • He got sober

thats my guess of what changed his attitude atleast

  • i was wondering why there was a circle jerks at the bottom right?, keith morris the lead singer of cj

  • seedball?????....wtf...naw, speedball is heroin n coke shot in a vein, speedball with meth is not the same thats tweaker talk

  • haha. makeup provided by MAC.

  • he legit just said he shot speed balls all day for 5 years

  • shittiest interview everrr

  • oO john´s heroin time

  • its awesome how john didnt become what became of most musicians and survived his drug habbits and still plays to this day:)

  • @matbellers , yeah exactly... it's really a miracle... but I believe that some kind of ray of life, really, had helped him through all those dark times... led him out of this...

Anyway, John can be a real example for all the people who can't find the strength within themselves to beat the addiction and give up...

  • poor man ... i dont think so , a drugaddict cant be an example for all the people ... he isnt God! , he's just a human being tryin' to be better, c'mon... i had troubles with the drugs too and im not an example for all the people , God is an Example , not a guitarrist from california c'mon

  • @matbellers yeah, he actually quit whan he was 27

  • john is doing waht jimmy want it to do

  • this was filmed before he went to rehab, because his second album was made for drug money. but his teeth are different. he must have gotten them removed arter he quit heroin cold turkey, and then went to rehab for his addiction to alcohol and cocaine.

  • @misssophie119 he didn't make the album for money he released it for money

  • john is the jimi that lived

  • He was on Crack and speed at this point.

  • Where in the hell did you get that from? He didn't speed or Meth. He was into dope and coke. He might have quit dope at this point but was still drinking and smoking crack. He never did speed.

  • he did speed...i just watched an interview where he said his girlfriend at the time was sick of him sitting around the house doing speed all day

  • Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter anyway. He used to be sick and now he is well. That's all that matters.

  • What interview was that,Sounds interesting

  • I think what he meant was speed balls. He might have shot meth but I'm pretty sure what he meant was a seed ball, where you shoot coke and herion at the same time.

  • terrible pedito
