I love those mountain springs like that. I think the water is 52* ? I rarely filtered water that come out of a spring like that, never got sick. The At is something special.
@jamie7378 You're right; I probably didn't need to filter this water. This water was coming right out of the mountainside and I’m sure it was filtered plenty by the mountain. However, since I was doing a multi-day, solo hike in the fall of the year with few other hikers around (I only saw 2 during the trip), I was being overly cautious, especially since I did not have cell phone coverage to call for help. I’m hoping to one day get back up to this section and go further north.
@MrItchyElbow Also, since most of the streams I end up getting water from are shallow, the pickup ends up lying on the stream bottom instead of floating. Even in clear water, the possibility of sucking up debris from the stream bottom is pretty good. A coffee filter is cheap insurance.
@Woodenarrows I have one too and used it twice on my overnight just last week. Have always felt safe drinking what it's filtered - it's never failed me.
The Katadyn Hiker would probably be my choice too if I was finally going to buy one - so far I only used chemicals for treating water. Nice forest there!
When you said "it's cold", man... i had to go get a glass of water as it made me thirsty just watching you there JIm :))) I picked up a "1st need" from rei. little expensive, but pumps about as fast as that katadyn.
Jim, just seeing that brook with the trees and mossy rocks made me need to get outdoors. I think I'll take a walk in the hills behind the house before it gets too dark.

I don't think that you needed the pre-filter for that fill up. That moving water was pretty clear as was. Very nice scenery.

@MrItchyElbow I always use the coffee filter as a precaution. Sometimes running water can contain more sand and dirt debris than standing water.

Pretty world out there, isn't it. Thanks for the demo. I hear a lot of good things about the Katadyn, plus they're always improving them.

@Ggreenvideos It would be interesting to know what percentage of hikers, backpackers and bushcrafters use the Katadyn Hiker filters.

@Woodenarrows I think there are a lot. It seems popular

I prefer, filter over chemical treatments , It might be heavier, but I go to nature for nature
medicjimr 6 months ago
@medicjimr I agree Jim but I still carry some Katadyn Micropur tabs (Chlorine Dioxide) as a backup just incase something happens to the filter.
Woodenarrows 6 months ago
@Woodenarrows I have them too in pouch for back up next to boiling

Nice scenery there Jim. I really need to upgrade my filter someday... I'm still using my old Pur Scout (works great, but it's heavy!).
