  • WHY is their so much hatred of the cornish..........the descendants of king arthur shouldnt deserve such hatred....unless you all really are brainwashed into thinking you are pure saxons or normans :S

  • @3tangle3 Idiot.

  • @15niall yes well done....your reply was truly insightful....you are a traitor to the niall name, now fuck off out of this cornish video

  • The Fishermans Friends do a fantastic version of this song

  • Splaan!!!

  • Kernow yw konna tyr orth penn Breten Veur. Kernow yw bro geltek !

  • @CornishNeverEnglish Shut up, you ruddy Cornish bastard.

  • Malta, Luxembourg, Andorra, Liechtenstein, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man all smaller than Cornwall and not governed by the rotten English Parliament. We would manage. Better poverty than under the English boot heel.

  • That brought a tear to my eye, my ancestors were engineers and only went up to plymouth but it puts you in touch with the strife of your ancestors

  • @TheMarrification That actually made me cry

  • my grandad was a sailor, he was away sailing for years, he said while he was away they built the(Tamar) bridge, he came back and couldnt believe his eyes at how many emits there were

  • Oh God, why are Cornish people still banging on about independence from England. For one thing, it is part of Britain and England, and should remain so. For another, it's local economy is the worst in the country; it couldn't survive as an independant state. Maybe all you morons who want this to be the case should stop being so damn arrogant. It's like saying Yorkshire should become independant. Seriously. Grow up.

  • @15niall "grow up" ...surely you need to grow up if you are being so condescending...they arent after independence...just want their very ancient and effective stannary parliament....you may do well to do some actual research on cornish history.

  • @3tangle3 No, a lot of Cornish people are after independence. Alot of people have already stated this fact on this video alone. Seriousely, don't contradict me when clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. Perhaps you should embark on a little research. Secondly, kindly don't accuse me of being 'condescending', when firstly, you clearly do not know what it means;I was stating only fact. Nothing I said was incorrect, everything you said was incorrect. Condescending enough? True enough

  • A romanticised language, now that is very cocky indeed, that's the same point made time and time again. Look at the place names of Wales, Cornwall and Brittany.

History is only written by the winners!!

  • The thing is I am from west penwith where i heard cornish being spoken on a daily basis but feel that i am a nationalist , i support England but am very aware of my distinct heritage to which I have always been made to be ashamed of in school and in my later life. We should be all proud of Britain and proud to be British something that has been lost!

  • fdjglhj

  • Show of hands are from devon, Just because they sing about the region they live in, you the cornish will claim everything is from cornwall. study wikipedia and grow up.

  • Shows of Hands are amazing. I saw them in Winchester, Hampshire. Steve even tweeked his song "Poppy Day" to be down the M3 corridor, rather than the M4. It gave it the local touch that the majority of songs are lacking these days.

  • oggie oggie oggie,oi oi oi

  • no monkey this is cornish music,,oggie oggie oggie ,oi oi oi

  • @MrJondabong - Aren't the band from Devon? That's in England, isn't it? (as is Southampton, where I believe Steve is originally from)

  • @adventussaxonum Yes They Are From Devon, And PROUD! The Cornish Will Lay Claim To Anything and Everything. Grow Up Kernow.

  • no monkey...this is real cornish music..oggie oggie oggie ,oi oi oi

  • This is real English music !!! Top stuff !!!

  • WE are cornish cornish, my ancestors, not what we are our taught!!!

  • Free Hampshire! Fuck the UK! Fuck London! Free Hampshire!

  • This song is magic ... I am of Cornish parents [tho I was born in Plymouth ]

my ancestory is literally all Cornish ...

I now live in the US .. I love family History this song is very special .. Thank you for adding ....

  • dam its on sky arts not bbc dam dam dam

  • Amazing song from a great group!

  • i have seen SOH live, truly amazing !! if you ever get the chance take it .

  • kernow bys vyken!!!!

  • As an ordinary working class bloke and an Internationalist i find Nationalism narrow shallow and ignorant, it only serves the powers that be, and as for SOH's Regionalism ?....GET A GRIP LADS!.

  • @reddirtuk As another ordinary working bloke i gotta agree mind though i dont see a problem with being proud of being from somewhere long as it aint exculding others e.g im proud to be welsh but i got no problem with anyone who aint.

  • just saw them in the quarterhouse in folkestone, what a brilliant show.

  • miranda with fender jazz bass!

  • I' m a Cornish boy!

  • ILOVE SHOW OF HANDS

  • sos about recent comment doing over mic sos everybody

  • oh and i think i recognise that bassist... anybody know who she is?

show of hands are the best

  • the bassist is Miranda Sykes

  • best songwriter since woody guthrie!

    thanks steve!

  • Dont know why the Cornish haven't adopted this as their anthem yet-well some have! Nothing better than watching a cornishman listen to this song live and seeing the tears welling up in his eyes-god I love Show of Hands!!!!

  • I think the drums spoil the whole idea of show of hands tbh. But i still think they are amazing.

  • mmmmm David Oddy instruments....

  • Sorry - garbled the last bit - I was wondering if there was something wrong with the foldback.

  • Saw show of hands last week in Dartington Great Hall. Really excellent gig - they tempered their usual style a bit to fit the acoustics of the hall. Much better performance than the one on this video -I've seen them q a few time and they've always sounded better than this. I wonder if there was something wrong wiLove the song though , , ,

  • Apart from the "Arsenic and Tin" references (and the Names), this song works for Coal and Salt Miners too

  • Don't Steve and Phil live in Devon?

  • Phil's natively Cornish I think - I dunno about Steve though..

  • Phil was born in Exminster near Exeter; Steve is originally from Eastleigh nr Southampton. Steve went to school in Exmouth; Phil across the Exe Estuary in Teignmouth. Both now live in Topsham nr Exeter.

Show Of Hands don't just write about living in Devon; and Devon life; but the South West as a whole.

  • Unfortunately they seem to think Cornwall is in England... ={ shame!

  • Maybe not. The song refers to "the English" moving into their houses.

  • "our tongue is no longer spoken" fits with the decline of the Cornish language

  • and 'the french fishing in our seas' is pretty obvious

  • The Spanish.

  • Cornwall is in England

  • Nope. Never has been and never will be unless the Cornish Stannary Parliament officialy sign it over to the British Parliament.

Read up on the 1508 Charter of Pardon and the Tamar Bridge Act 1998. Also for a more detailed historical and political account look at the Duchy of Cornwall site (with the suffix "eu")

  • Realisticly, what Cornish Stannary Parliament do is irrelevant.

  • James Fletcher, aren't you living in Plymouth? You're originally from Bristol so I'm not quite sure why you spend so much time trolling videos on Cornwall and England. Not born in Cornwall, not living in Cornwall, hasn't got a Cornish name.. yet you have attempted to reinvent yourself as "Cornish". You have a personality disorder, and a very odd, crankish one at that.

  • I'm 5/8 Welsh, 3/8 Cornish (a PROPER Celt) and I find you offensive - one can feel something in the blood without living there. It's not down to a name or living in a place - if all the people who love Cornwall actually lived there then the Cornish would be priced out of their homes - be happy that people love and support Cornwall and what it stands for, instead of posting your venomous vitriol on here. (And yes, I could have posted all that in Welsh too - how good's your Cornish, Native Kid?)

  • If you can't speak a Brythonic or Gaelic language as your primary tongue then you are not a "Celt". (a romanticised Victorian era creation, there are only Gaels and Britons). There is no such thing as "feeling x blood"-for instance as someone whose ancestors comes from the West Coast of Ireland, people right down the French coast and northern Spain have the same material genetics/"blood" as me (R1B). Language is the messure in such cultures.

  • Wel, os rydych chi'n teimlo fel hyn, pam dydych chi ddim wedi sgwennu ateb mewn iaith Brythoneg, te?

  • You've gone quiet, Native Boy - what's wrong, have I floored you by being more properly Celtic / Brythonic than you claim to be? Pity, was looking forward to screwing you and your racist views over - ym Gymraeg, wrth gwrs....

  • Brilliant

  • i bet when they played roots at cambridge i bet the left was throwing up at that song seeing how much marxists self loathing apologists they have there.

  • Great song - I love it

I think the sentiments can work for most parts of the the UK away from the South East.

  • And if you think the South-East is all thriving, go and have a look at the Isle of Sheppey. Or Hastings. Of Folkestone.

  • Its the south-WEST. all about CORNWALL. not the south east. and i don't think the sentiments do work for anywhere else because people elsewhere wouldn't understand what the lyrics are about and mean.

  • i think they should though

  • it works in a lot of places, not very much in the south-east but some places.

  • Works for the South East too. Up until around the mid-20th century most people in Sussex, Kent and Hampshire had lives as farmers, labourers, fishermen etc just as hard as everyone else, not sipping tea and playing polo like many people imagine. The South East still is not as wealthy as many would make out.

  • Cornwall will rise.

  • oh yeah!

  • KERNOW BYS VYSKEN!

  • sang this in a folk club a few weeks ago, its the first time ive had people singing along top tune, george michael used to be my musical hero ,now i think its steve .

  • love this song! saw them live in Sheffield and they did it as an Encour! HAHA!

    was AMAZING!!

can highly recommend seeing them! and spread the word about them! Phil and Miranda are really friendly! but Steve was being attcked by middle aged women! haha

  • Yah hay!

I'm going to a concert soon, hopefully!

Can't wait theese guys are awesome!

    <3

  • just a couple of corrections, Cornwall is a COUNTRY or "Duchy" not a county! Also Lanson is ponounced Lanson... These two tossers are walking a very thin line in Cornwall.

  • If you were listening properly then you would know that he was talking about 'Launceston' rather than 'Lanson'. If you truly care about the fate of Cornwall you should be pleased by the fact that these two fantastic musicians are putting your plight on the map.

  • piss off mate the song isn't anythin about Cornwall and whether its as country or county the point is about declining industry not were you come from.

  • The phrase 'Cousin Jack' stems from an American nickname for the Cornish miners who went over to America to make their fortunes.

  • its everything to do with cornwall,

"i dream of a bridge over the Tamar and it opens us up to the east and in my dreams i see the english and there living in our houses and i see the spanish fishing in our sea" the tamar borders devon and Cornwall, and if you look at the comments mentioning Cornwalls independence from england it only takes some common sense...

  • Yeah most certianly to do with Cornwall, and the basic decline in working class Britain as a whole, perhaps you should of listened to the song before making a comment really, if you did then you comment is absolutely retarded as apposed to very stupid, oh well, great song great message love these guys, and they certainly believe that you should have the right to make a comment even if it is as retarded as yours, Peace x x

  • that was actually aimed at the the folk ups comment, Peace x

  • Seriously, this song is aout cornish miners.

Their suffereing, and how hard it is to live in the country(as is the point of folk music)

    You should know that.

  • Don`t forget Suffolk ! we want independence from England to. Muhahahahhha.

  • I thought Suffolk was in England?

  • @bonzodog10 shut up you dick you are English British you cant separate centuries of history

  • @edwards21416 I can mate ,you can be british if ya like, i`m English. ; ).

  • @bonzodog10 Why? :L

  • You seem to have missed the historical context of the song...It refers to another era

  • ..and yet fits so perfectly to this era.

  • yer it duz to all eras it isnt lital but if u listen its sending a message that not many see

  • @tvargan go to redruth or camborne and say that

  • Its so sad that Steve's son is ill and has had to go to hospital

  • did anyone see them at trobridge they are pritty cool and the songs have more meaning than the normal pop we hear

  • Same arguement used by most of the alternative scene, metal, rock, etc.

  • Theres a lot of metaphors in there which are un-PC.

  • like what?

  • how are metaphores not PC?

  • Perfection...!

  • Saw them at Cropredy too; thanks for posting this, there's a distinct lack of Show of Hands stuff on YouTube.

  • Just saw them at Cropredy; wish they'd come to the States. Great stuff Ryan, thanks much.

  • A very moving song indeed!

  • KERNOW BYS VYKEN!

  • This is a classic CFF performance.

  • Yaaaaaaaaaaayyyy Show of hands were greatat the CFF 2007!

  • arrr, they be a right guud fold band, aharr. Harr, harr harr, aharr..XD

  • I'm Going to the festival this year... IN LESS THAN 48 HOURS! I can't wait to see SOH, my favorite band. Also, I don't think this song is about English independence, as someone said...

  • This song brings a tear to my eye everytime i hear it....so much sentiment.

  • This song brings a tear to my eye everytime i hear it....so much sentiment.

  • Yeah i live near Mansfield i agree with auldsot what has happened to this country most townspeople dont even get along anymore, if you like folky music and general hippy stuff there is still a couple of festivals to remind us of the old days, cambridge is a close one, go every year it is brilliant, Peace x

  • This songs also good on their Dark Fields album

  • NIce to see another instrumental version of this song, but I heard this song first on "The Bridgerow Sessions" album, and I loved how pared down and unplugged it sounded.

  • as allways vey powerfull song, some thing of a trademark for SOH,i live in the south west, sod all jobs here,3 busses a week, how am i to get a job? still i can spend time on the most important crop in the world.................my kids,Robin,Jack,Ben and Charlie.

  • its about cornish life and what has happend there. im from a mining family in derbyshire and feal the same though. town after town dead or failing the industries are gone to india and other countrys where people are being paid peanuts. this song sums up lots of problems systemic to the whole of england.

  • I'm a Derbyshire lad with one grandfather in mining and the other a Butterley foundry worker and I agree 100%. Once thriving high streets full of empty shops with the occasional £££ store and tattoo parlour

    What happened to our country?

  • As an Englishmen IO understand this sentiment, English independence Now!

  • I think you've misunderstood the song somewhat...

  • yeah, does sound like he didnt get it. should listen to the words.

  • if anything its got more in common with Cornish independence from England, listen to the dream at the end of the song!
