  • @shellac1925... you're right. Many conductors play this movement too fast (the worst had to be von Karajan). You might want to check out Bernstein's version... 9:10 for the first movement. Very similar to this interpretation.

  • Wonderful!

For the past 4 or 5 decades (I forget how long), and still, my all-time favorite recording of this work.

  • Kubelik was a great conductor with a great ear for the total conception of a piece.

Unfortunately, he was too nice a guy to really hammer things home to an orchestra and too often complicated transitional passages of his performances (with certain orchestras) can and do sound rather sloppy and 2nd-rate.

Still, he had a great mind and what he left us was unquestionably great; it's a shame that the trustees of the CSO didn't properly shoulder more while he was music director there.

  • Kubelik conducted this perfectly. I often hear this performed too fast. The idea is to convey that crushing weight of the modern world. I fucking love this recording, thank you!!!!

  • Brilliant!! Sustained concentration..Everyone else seems to clock in at under 8 minutes but this feels right..Early Kubelik with Chicago is fantastic..I'd love to hear the Schonberg 5 pieces from '51.

  • I've just posted the Schonberg.

  • Thankyou so much...I adore the music-making of R Kubelik.
