The whistling from a turbocharger tends to increase in frequency with the engine RPMs.  A straight cut gearbox, on the other hand, increases in RPM with the car's speed. You'll notice between shifts that the whistling stays at the same frequency.

The racing line is more slippery when it's wet, due to the rubber of the tires. Avoiding the usual racing line can sometimes be quicker due to more grip on the clean areas. That's what I mean.
