Heard that song the first time at a concert of the old boys ... I was nearly melting *smile* like I´m always beginn to melt when Barney starts to sing.
@neilhosey They sang all sorts - everyone seems to think that every song the Dubliners sang is Irish, that isn't the case. Many, infact, a hell of a lot of them are either Scottish or English in origin.
As a codhead(grimbarian) born and bred i feel clarity of the debate is needed. During the herring run boats from all over the country would follow the shoals along the east coast to take advantage of this seasonal bounty. The scots herring lassies would salt and pack into barrels the catch at ports such as Grimsby,Scarborough and Lowestoft Whilst fishing for the herring for a short period of time, time in port was considered as time wasted. so many sacrifices to deadly cost for our fish
@jeroendevries It's quite obviously English, Jesus Christ listen to the name of the ports in the song. Grimsby, for example, was a major fishing port in the later 19th and early 20th century.

Fantastic song that has nothing to do with Scotland, North East coast of England, hence Grimsby and Scarborough.

@djsmurfie obviously it is an english folk song but like all great songs there is something universal in the song it could be set in any fishing port
