Besides Casino and of course Contempt, what else has this been used for? It sounds so familiar. It reminds me of Nyman's score for Gattaca or something Giacchino did for Lost, which I'm sure they were inspired by.
This score floored me (and apparently Brigitte too! ). I was certain it was a centuries old classic by a master composer. I had to let my dvd play on Menu for an hour. How can one piece of music encapsulate so much beauty & suffering all at once?
scorsese like tarantino, just making and or taking creations from others...like Salvador Dali said true artist is not the one who creates but the one who steals...
Three shots, articulated with the main sections of the music to illustrate this unforgettable score. Simplicity. This is by far the best self-made video for Delerue's music for THE CONTEMPT I've seen on here,
I watched Casino today and was struggling really hard to place this despite just having watched Contempt earlier in the year. Beautiful theme, two very good films (thought the Godard is clearly the superior achievement, of course)
casino and contempt are completely different. just because contempt is old doesn't make it stale and just because Casino is new it doesn't make it shallow. either way the song is awesome.
You're right, PureSoap. This movie is a critics' darling, a sacred cow, and several high-profile revivals over the last few years have hoodwinked a new generation of filmgoers into thinking it's a masterpiece. But it's not: at best it's a rather empty curiosity. I say this as a Godard fan: I love quite a few of his films, but CONTEMPT is a misfire.
@goback3spaces, thank you very much! I do appreciate your words. I am so glad to hear that someone agrees with me. And I know exactly what you mean. God Bless my friend!
Goback3spaces, I agree with you, pretty much. But damn, this music! Sublime and unnerving. Delerue and Bardot make 'Contempt' haunting, and one forgets how truly tedious much of it is.
Yeah, fab music, Mademoiselle. As for Brigitte, she was gorgeous in the movie, but was she indeed "fantastic"? Godard was in love with her behind, as any guy would be, I suppose, but I wonder how good she'd have been as Lady Macbeth.
@goback3spaces well I ve got both feelings when I watch it
u r right it is rather empty , there s no action and I hate it when cinema talks about cinema
still , that red car, the beautiful villa, BB, the growing contempt, have altogether an enthralling perfume that makes the movie so special it still is less boring as many action movies
It fits to my moods right now....sadness and in doubt...this music also makes me feel so small and humble.. then its beauty touches my heart and then there is hope...again...

it does remind me of both. though contempt is probably the worst film ive seen from godard.
imma have to say casino used this song much better, more operatic cinema deserves the likeness of delerue. and since casino is operatic as fuck, guess what?
@2BlowVEVO 'But in the end, I wound up right back where I started. I could still pick winners, and I could still make money for all kinds of people back home. And why mess up a good thing?'
@rafadv2 Sorry, I know by advance that this comment will rise contempt -so to speak - but I HATE Godard and I love Scorsese's work - though I am French, this may have no connection at all. Didn't they told you that taste is subjective, as one might say ? So, this is not because in cinema schools they only have eyes for f...ing Godard that I would follow the herd.
@rafadv2 The way I see it, they're both great films, and Scorsese uses the best music in his films. That closing scene is memorable, and part of the reason is because this music makes it that much better. Both films are classics
