Can't say he's best living jazz guitarist, since NYC has several playing at this level, but he is very, very good. I enjoy his playing. The bass player is much more impressive, and I just saw Jeff Berlin live, and also play 6-s bass myself. Great chord work, a very melodic solo, and solid groove when comping.
Playing at this level? Don't try to analyze the quality of his musicianship. Of course there are no bests in the world of music, why are you even trying to argue against it. I've sat in watching many of his gigs at Steamers, and I have to say, overall, he is one of the most enjoyable living musicians to listen to and watch, on or off the stage.
I just think you didn't have to write that first sentence. It really has no point whatsoever, not that I'm trying to repress your first amendment right. It just didn't NEED to be expressed. I appreciate the rest of your comment though.
@Samuijazz The bass player is an old student of his and is not more interesting. Good god! Rons playing a 7 string and half the time you think you are hearing the bass player its not its Ron on the low A.
Nope; I have heard all those guys; Ron does the whole spectrum of jazz consistently better IN MY OPINION, than the ones you mentioned. I love 'em all (particularly, Clint Strong), but he can't do what Ron can do... and Ron can't do what HE can do, but he can do other things...
Altogether, his plusses add up to more than anyone else's, but that's just my opinion, and I know what they say about opinions... LOL! Thanks for your comments.
I've taken a lesson with him. He's the greatest. Simply the greatest guitar player alive.

Ugnex, I play also, so i am a reasonable judge of ; WHAT I LIKE at any level. In one week in NYC,
i saw, J. Abercrombie, J. Scofield, J. McGlaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Bucky Piziarelli.
And Alan Donson, who turned down Return To Forever.
I did an duo album with him, and Miles D. said "It's cool."
So maybe I do have a valid opinion on guitarists.
I like Ron's playing. Your mileage may vary.
