The media thrive on stories like this, if they could the media would have 3 kidnappings a year, two child abductions, 5 celebrity cocaine stories, 4 corrupt politicians, 4 stories of police brutality, 1 horrific rape/murder of an OAP, 8 illegal immigrant drug ring stories, 12 have a go heroes, 3 plucky pensioners, 15 Iraq military "heroes"....AND A PARTRIDGE IN A FUCKING PEAR TREE. Without a rabid media there'd be no 'find Maddie' fund and therefore no Shannon Matthews case - sure the media is good for when you are actually looking for your child but I can't say it's done much good in the two last big cases.

To be fair, I think the whole "Maddie" sensation was blown out of proportion over unfounded speculation that the parents were responsible. People were all too ready to believe that that without any evidence. Yes, the papers are resposible to some extent, but scandel sells. You have to ask questions about the mentality of a proportion of the population who also perpetuate the intrest in these cases, what do they get out of speculating and wallowing in the misery of others.
